Early offense leads Mt. Vernon past Akron

MITCHELL, S.D. – All nine Mt. Vernon starters had at least one hit and eight of the nine had an RBI in the Mustangs 13-5 first round win over the Akron Rebels Thursday night at Cadwell Park.

The teams combined for 13 runs in the first three innings. Cameron Deinert blew the game open with a three-run home run to left in the 3rd inning to give Mt. Vernon a 7-3 lead.

Three more runs in the 5th inning put the game away as the Mustangs increase their lead to 12-4.

Koby Larson and Bradley Dean both went 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Dean tripled in the second, doubled in the third and had a pair of singles in in the fifth and the eighth.

Mt. Vernon also ran all over Akron going 5-for-7 in steals.

Luke Tiesler would pick up the win, going 7 1/3 innings in relief of Deric Denning with two outs in the 2nd inning. Tiesler gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out eight on 98 pitches.

Dylan Kirkeby got the loss for Akron, going just 1 2/3 innings and giving up four runs.

Blake Faber led the way for the Akron offense out of the leadoff spot with three of the Rebels seven hits with two runs.

The Mustangs (14-7) will play Flandreau in the 2nd round on Monday night at 5:30 pm.
