MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys basketball would lose in the final seconds on Thursday night, 59-56 at O’Gorman on a three pointer by Chace Hermanson. Hermanson finished with 15 points, while O’Gornan’s Mason Clark scored a game-high 23 points. Mitchell’s Carter McCormick had a good look at a potential game tying three from the right elbow that was just long as time expired. Colton Smith led the Kernels with 22 points and seven rebounds before hurting his left ankle with one minute remaining. Collin Weier finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Lincoln Bottom tied the game with a three pointer with 40 seconds left. Mitchell ends the regular season with an 8-11 record and will be the No. 12 seed in next week’s SoDAK 16. The Kernels most likely opponent is No. 5 seed Watertown next Saturday night. Mitchell lost at Watertown in the first game of the season, 59-55 in overtime on December 16.
— Mitchell Kernels girls basketball ended the regular season with a 65-34 loss to No. 2 O’Gorman on Thursday night. Sydney Terveen had a game-high 30 points, surpassing 1,000 for her career in the fourth quarter. Addie Siemsen led the Kernels with 16 points. Mitchell, 12-8 on the season, gets ready to host next Friday’s SoDAK 16 game as the No. 7 seed against either Huron or Spearfish.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball host No. 3 seed Hastings in the GPAC tournament semifinals on Saturday at 3 pm at the Corn Palace. The winner advanced to the GPAC tournament final on Tuesday.
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball picked up a 10-3 win at York (Neb.) on Thursday, added five runs in the top of the ninth inning. The Tigers face York (Neb.) on Friday in a Noon doubleheader.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball travels to Sioux Center, Iowa, for four games this weekend. The Tigers face Dickinson State on Friday at 4 pm, followed by Haskell at 6:30 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State men’s basketball held Kansas City to its lowest point total of the season in a 73-59 road win on Thursday night. Joe Sayler scored a game-high 22 points along on 4-of-8 shooting from three, while Damon Wilkinson added 19 points. Kalen Garry finished with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. SDSU will be at USD on Saturday at 1 pm in Vermillion with the loser being the No. 7 seed in next week’s Summit League Tournament.
— South Dakota State women’s basketball ends the regular season on Saturday when they host USD at 6 pm. The winner secures the No. 2 seed for next week’s Summit League Tournament.
— South Dakota State softball, 12-4 on the season, heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma, next weekend with two games on Friday and two on Saturday.
— South Dakota State baseball will be at Central Arkansas on Friday for the start of a four-game series.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s basketball will be at SDSU on Saturday night at 6 pm with the winner securing the No. 2 seed for next week’s Summit League tournament.
— USD men’s basketball host SDSU on Saturday at 1 pm in Vermillion to end the regular season.
— USD softball travel to Miami this weekend for five games, starting on Friday at 9 am vs. Harvard.
HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING
— Mitchell’s Rocky Clark and Noah Bennett both advanced to the semifinals at the AA State Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday. On the girls side, Mitchell’s Taylor DeJong finished 1-1 on the season, while Kaylynn Fick and Danny and Diane Borja all went 0-1 on the first day of competition. Day two of the three day state wrestling tournament continues today in Sioux Falls.
NCAA
— The NCAA football oversight committee is recommending emergency legislation to protect the transfer portal window by issuing penalties for schools and coaches who circumvent the rules. The committee on Wednesday proposed legislation to penalize schools who add players who did not make public their interest in transferring during the January transfer portal window. The proposed legislation would become effective immediately if approved at the Division I cabinet meeting in April. The head coach who accepts a transfer who did not properly enter the January portal would be prohibited from all recruiting, on-field coaching and team meetings for six games.
NBA
— Anthony Edwards scored 31 points and Donte DiVincenzo added 18 as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat Los Angeles Clippers 94-88. The Timberwolves improve to 5-1 since Feb. 9 and 3-1 since the All-Star break. Minnesota will be at Denver on Sunday at 2:30 pm on ABC.
