COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The Texas attorney general’s office is warning the Big 12 Conference that it could face legal action from Texas Tech if the league moves to sanction the school over quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility case. The warning comes as Big 12 leaders consider their response after Sorsby won a temporary injunction this week restoring his eligibility after the NCAA had ruled him permanently ineligible for gambling on pro and college sports. Sorsby’s case stems from admissions he placed dozens of bets, including wagers involving his own team while at Indiana. Texas Tech says he has completed inpatient treatment and is receiving ongoing support. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said the conference received the legal notice shortly before an executive board meeting Thursday and is reviewing options with counsel. The Big 12 board is scheduled to meet again Monday, with league officials saying all options remain under consideration.

NFL
— Former NFL wide receiver Henry Ruggs has been denied parole nearly five years after a high-speed crash that killed a woman and her dog in Las Vegas, Nevada officials said Thursday. The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners rejected Ruggs’ request following a hearing this week. Ruggs, a former first-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders, is serving a three- to 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2023 to felony DUI causing death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Prosecutors said Ruggs was driving up to 156 mph on Nov. 2, 2021, when his vehicle struck a car driven by 23-year-old Tina Tintor, killing her and her dog. Authorities said his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Ruggs will be eligible for another parole review ahead of his mandatory release date in 2027.

— A court report says five law firms have been barred from handling claims tied to the NFL’s $1 billion concussion settlement after allegations they fraudulently steered former players into Parkinson’s disease diagnoses. The report says 98 former players were involved, with 57 claims already approved totaling more than $95 million before an audit flagged suspicious activity. Another 37 claims are now being denied. Investigators allege the firms bypassed settlement rules requiring approved neurologists by using outside doctors who diagnosed players and prescribed medication that masked symptoms.

TENNIS
— Serena Williams’ doubles comeback ended after just one match when her partner, Victoria Mboko, withdrew because of a knee injury, organizers said Thursday. The 44-year-old Williams had returned to professional tennis this week for her first match since the 2022 U.S. Open, teaming with Mboko to win their opening-round doubles match in straight sets. Mboko injured her knee during a singles match earlier in the week and was forced to pull out of the doubles draw. Williams is expected to continue her comeback plans, with a scheduled appearance at next week’s Berlin Open.

COLLEGE
— North Carolina State is exploring potential legal action against LSU tied to men’s basketball coach Will Wade and his departure from the Wolfpack after one season. NC State is investigating whether LSU improperly induced Wade to breach his contract and whether any actions were taken to reduce the buyout owed under his employment agreement. The letter also raises the possibility that LSU violated North Carolina’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which could carry financial damages if proven. LSU hired Wade on March 26, just two weeks after he publicly expressed commitment to NC State for a second season.
