MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball swept No. 4 Watertown 3-0 on Thursday night (25-22, 25-23, 27-25). The Kernels improve to 13-4 on the season and have won seven matches in a row, their longest winning streak since starting the 2017 season 11-0. Addie Siemsen had 24 assists, along with 10 digs and six blocks. Audrey Miller had a team-high 12 kills, while Nia Talley added seven kills and 19 digs. Mitchell will be at Aberdeen Central on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball was picked to finish second in the GPAC preseason poll behind Dordt. The Tigers open the season Nov. 4 at the Corn Palace vs. Bismarck State.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball was picked to finish seventh in the GPAC preseason poll released on Thursday. Northwestern was first with 10 first-place votes, while Morningside was second. The Tigers open the season Oct. 28 at the Corn Palace vs. Grand View.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball host No. 4 Concordia on Saturday at 3 pm. The Tigers are tied with Dordt for fourth place in the GPAC with a 7-4 conference record. Concordia is 10-1 in the conference and 17-2 on the season.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer hosts Concordia on Saturday at 4 pm. The Tigers are 5-1-1 in the GPAC, tied with Midland for second place behind Northwestern.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Concordia on Saturday at 6 pm. The Tigers are 3-1-3 in the GPAC and currently in seventh place.

— Dakota Wesleyan football is on a bye this week before hosting Waldorf for homecoming on Saturday, October 25th at 2 pm. DWU hosts Concordia on Saturday at 6 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball swept North Dakota State on Thursday night 3-0, (25-21, 25-22, 25-18). The Jackrabbits improved to 12-3 on the season and 6-0 in the Summit League. Madison Burr and Sylvie Zgonc led SDSU with eight kills each, while setter Rylee Martin had 26 assists. Dating back to last season, SDSU has won 21 of their past 22 regular season conference matches. The Jacks will be at USD on Saturday at 6 pm.

— The start time for Saturday’s South Dakota State-Murray State football game has been moved ahead five hours due to the threat of severe weather in the forecast. Kickoff is now set for 1 p.m. Central Time in Murray, Kentucky. The Jackrabbit pregame show will begin at 11 a.m. on KORN News Radio. Second-ranked SDSU enters the game 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer begins a three-game stretch of road matches to close out the regular season on Saturday. The Jackrabbits will be at USD at 3 p.m. in Vermillion. SDSU saw its 11-match unbeaten streak end at Denver last week Thursday, but rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Omaha on Sunday. The Jacks are 9-2-4 overall and sit third in the conference standings with a 3-1-1 record.

— USD volleyball will be at Kansas City on Wednesday at 7 pm.

— USD football will be at Northern Iowa on Saturday at 1 pm.

— USD women’s soccer hosts SDSU on Saturday at 3 pm.

— The Dodgers Tommy Edman hit a tiebreaking single off Milwaukee rookie Jacob Misiorowski in a two-run sixth inning as Los Angeles beat the Brewers 3-1 to take a 3-0 lead in their NL Championship Series. Los Angeles moved within one win of becoming the first defending champion to reach the World Series since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies. No team has won consecutive championships since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees won three in a row.

— Max Scherzer threw 5 2/3 innings, while Andrés Giménez homered and drove in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 8-2 to even the American League Championship Series at two games apiece. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his fifth homer this postseason and the 41-year-old Scherzer allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays, who have outscored the Mariners 21-6 in Seattle after losing the first two games at home. Game 5 in the best-of-seven series is Friday, with Kevin Gausman scheduled to start for Toronto against Game 1 winner Bryce Miller.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Indiana has announced a new eight-year contract with head football coach Curt Cignetti worth nearly $93 million. The deal rewards Cignetti for pushing the Hoosiers into national championship contention in just two seasons. The school said the average annual compensation will be approximately $11.6 million. The contract runs through 2033. Cignetti is 17-2 since arriving from James Madison. Indiana advanced to the College Football Playoff for the first time last year and are currently ranked No. 3 nationally.

NFL
— Joe Flacco passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 33-31 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bengals snapped a four-game losing streak. Evan McPherson kicked a 36-yard field goal with seven seconds left to win.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— No. 1 UConn women’s basketball’s season opener against No. 20 Louisville that is supposed to be played at an air base in Germany on Nov. 4 is in jeopardy of being moved because of the government shutdown. A person familiar with the decision says that if the shutdown continues to Monday the game will be played at a neutral site in the U.S.

SOCCER
— FIFA has announced that over 1 million tickets have been sold for next year’s World Cup. The tournament will be hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. FIFA reports that fans from 212 countries and territories have purchased tickets, even though only 28 of the 48 spots have been filled. The tournament runs from June 11 through July 19 next year. The first round of ticket sales was a lottery, with 4.5 million applicants. The next draw opens on October 27. FIFA has also launched its official resale platform for tickets.
