MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell High School hosted its annual cheer and dance invitational on Thursday, the first event in its new gymnasium. Mitchell’s cheer team placed seventh out of 20 teams, scoring 235.5 points. Harrisburg won the competition for the third consecutive year with 288 points.

— Mitchell Kernels boys golf will compete at the Parkston Invitational on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis hosts Spearfish and Pierre on Friday at 10 am at Hitchcock Park.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 3-2-1 on the season, host Huron on Saturday at 1 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer, 1-3-1 on the season, host Huron on Saturday at 11 am.

— Mitchell Kernels volleyball, 3-2 on the season, host Pierre on Saturday at 2:30 pm for its annual Kernel Bowl match.

— Mitchell Kernels football hosts Brookings in the annual Kernel Bowl on Saturday at 6 pm at Joe Quintal Field. The KORNer Booth pregame show starts at 5 pm.

— Mitchell cross country will complete at the Augustana Twilight Meet at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Friday.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s golf finished eighth on Thursday at the Blue River Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska, shooting +52 as a team over three days. Individually, Connor Calahan placed third overall at -5 after shooting a -3 (69) on Thursday. DWU will compete at the Mt. Marty Invite starting on Sept. 22.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 6-4 on the season, host Waldorf on Saturday at 3 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at York (Neb.) on Saturday at 4:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan football will be at Dordt on Saturday at 1 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball, 1-1 on the season, host the SDSU Invitational this week as they take on Ole Miss on Friday at 7 pm and Wyoming on Sunday at Noon. Ole Miss and Wyoming will face off on Saturday at 1 pm.

— No. 2 ranked South Dakota State football will be at No. 3 Montana State on Saturday at 7 pm. The two teams flipped spots in the national polls after the opening weekend, with SDSU overtaking the Bobcats for the second spot following a 20-3 home victory over No. 14 Sacramento State. Meanwhile, Montana State slipped to third after a 59-13 loss at Oregon last Saturday. SDSU defeated Montana State 20-16 back on Sept. 9, 2023, in Brookings.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer, 3-1-2 on the season, return home vs. Oregon State on Sunday at 1 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD volleyball lost in four sets on Thursday to Connecticut in the UConn Challenge, (26-24, 25-21, 25-27, 25-23). Sophomore Lauren Medeck had a match-high 18 kills. The Coyotes face Colgate on Friday at 6 pm.

— USD football plays at Lamar on Saturday at 6 pm following a 55-7 season opening loss to Iowa State.

— USD women’s soccer, 3-1-2 on the season, host Central Michigan on Sunday at 11 am.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Kyle Teel hit a three-run home run, while rookie Colson Montgomery homered and drove in three as the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 11-8. Chase Meidroth had four hits, as the White Sox came back from three runs down for the second consecutive night to win their season-high fifth straight game. Luke Keaschall had four hits and two runs scored for the Twins. Mickey Gasper had three RBIs, and Matt Wallner and Kody Clemens homered. The White Sox swept a four-game series at Minnesota for the first time in team history. The Twins start a three-game series at Kansas City tonight at 6:40 pm.

NFL
— Jalen Hurts rushed for two touchdowns for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who lost DL Jalen Carter star for spitting on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, then withstood a weather delay to beat Dallas 24-20 in the first game of the NFL season. The Eagles led 24-20 with 4:44 left in the third quarter when the game was delayed 65 minutes because of lightning. The game ended at 12:18 a.m.

WNBA
— Caitlin Clark will miss the rest of the Indiana Fever’s season because of a right groin injury. Said Clark in a statement: “I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season.” Clark was injured late in a July 15 game against Connecticut and later sustained a bone bruise. She averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5 rebounds in 13 games in her second season in the WNBA.

TENNIS
— Defending U.S. Open champion Aryna (Arena) Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Thursday night’s semifinals. The victory allowed the No. 1-ranked Sabalenka to move one victory away from becoming the first woman to win consecutive U.S. Open titles since Serena Williams from 2012 to 2014.

— Tennis great Björn Borg reveals in the last chapter of his upcoming memoir that he was diagnosed with an “extremely aggressive” prostate cancer, and he says that it is in remission after an operation last year. Borg said in a recent interview from his home in Stockholm that his most recent tests came back clean in August and is feeling good.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The NCAA’s FBS Oversight Committee has recommended eliminating the spring transfer window and having just a 10-day window starting on January 2. The committee is also proposing that December be a recruiting dead period. The Division I Administrative Committee must approve these changes, with a vote expected before October 1. FBS coaches unanimously supported the January portal proposal earlier this year.

MLB
— Ranger Suárez pitched six shutout innings and Trea Turner singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. The Phillies won two of three games the matchup between NL division leaders. Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta extended his scoreless innings streak to 29, three shy of the team record. Peralta struck out eight, allowed three walks and two hits while throwing 92 pitches over five innings.

— Paul Skenes pitched six scoreless innings and earned his 10th win of the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 to complete a three-game series sweep. Skenes allowed two hits, struck out eight, and walked one. The right-hander finally got his record above .500 for the first time this season and lowered his ERA to a major league-best 1.98.

— Carlos Rodón pitched six innings to tie for the major league win lead with 16 and Trent Grisham hit his career-high 30th homer of the season and 100th of his career to help the New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 8-4. Ryan McMahon also homered for the Yankees.

— Ryan Pepiot struck out six in five hitless innings and Christopher Morel had three hits and an RBI as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 for their seventh consecutive win. With the victory, the Rays moved within two games Seattle in the race for the final AL wild-card spot, the closest they have been to a playoff spot since July 26.

— Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-out solo home run in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3. The Royals hit four solo homers in a game where all seven runs came on home runs.

— The Arizona Diamondbacks will remain at Chase Field for the next 30 years after Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill appropriating $500 million for renovations. Hobbs signed House Bill 2704 atop the Diamondbacks’ dugout as players warmed up for Wednesday’s game against the Texas Rangers. The bill will recapture sales taxes from the stadium and other adjacent buildings over the next 30 years and reinvest them into infrastructure at the retractable-roof structure, home of the Diamondbacks since they joined MLB as an expansion franchise in 1998.
