Steele Morgan scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Mitchell’s 62-52 win over Thunder Basin Friday night in the final game of the Hoop City Classic at the Corn Palace. Dylan Soulek recorded 13 points, five rebounds and six assists. Aiden Myers and Colton Smith each added 10 points, with Myers nabbing seven rebounds. The Kernels held an 18-point lead in the second half before Thunder Basin cut the deficit to six, but the Kernels responded with a run to push lead back into double digits. The Kernels shot 62.5% from the field but made just 9 of 21 free throws and 3 of 11 3-point attempts. Mitchell (3-0) plays at Harrisburg Tuesday night and is at Yankton Friday night for a doubleheader with the girls.
The Mitchell Kernel girls’ basketball team was outscored 19-5 in the third quarter and lost 54-45 to Thunder Basin, Wyoming Friday night at the Corn Palace. Sawyer Stoebner led a fourth quarter comeback by scoring 13 of her 22 points in the quarter to get the Kernels to within four points but the deficit proved to be too much. Stoebner also had 13 rebounds and three assists. The Kernels made seven of their 17 shots from three-point range. Mitchell also outrebounded Thunder Basin 37-30 on the night. The Kernels travel to Yankton Friday night.
The Kernel girls wrestling team took part in the McCook Central-Montrose Girls Invitational in Salem on Friday. Danny Borja was runner-up at 126 and Frankie Kranz placed third in 106. The Kernels finished fourth overall in the 10-team event with 41 points. The Kernel wrestling teams will travel to Harrisburg for a triangular on Thursday with the Tigers and Yankton.
The Sioux Falls Flyers edged the Mitchell Marlins girl’s hockey team 4-3 Friday night at the Mitchell Activities Center. Brynlee Sabers had two goals with Reese Amick scoring the third goal for the Marlins. Sadie Kludt had 23 saves for Mitchell. Mitchell plays Brookings at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Mitchell Activities Center. The Mitchell Marlin boys’ hockey team returns to the ice with a home game versus Huron on Saturday, January 7th at 8:30 p.m.
