Sioux Falls East swept Mitchell in a doubleheader last night in Mitchell. In game one, Mitchell could not overcome a five run deficit and fell 9-6. Joe VanOverschelde had two of Mitchell’s six hits. Brady Hawkins had two RBIs. Then in game two, Mitchell could muster just four hits and committed five errors in a 6-0 loss. Mitchell Post 18, 11-11, overall on the season, heads to Pierre for two games today. Mitchell plays Pierre at 4 p.m. and will then play Sturgis at 6 p.m. Mitchell faces another full week next week with seven games between July 5th and July 11th.
The Mitchell Junior Legion baseball team travels to Sioux Falls to play West in a doubleheader today at 5 p.m. The Junior team returns home for doubleheaders Monday and Thursday against Pierre and Renner.
Mitchell Black hosts Sioux Falls East Thursday for two games starting at 4 p.m. Mitchell White travels to Yankton Thursday for a doubleheader.
Tonight’s amateur baseball schedule: Dimock-Emery hosts Menno; Alexandria hosts Parkston; Plankinton travels to Chamberlain; South Central is at Colome; and Miller hosts Kimball-White Lake. Platte plays Corsica-Stickney Friday in Corsica and Saturday night in Platte.
The NAIA shared its preliminary Fall 2020 Guidelines and Recommendations with membership on July 1, 2020. The guidelines include information regarding health and safety protocols, screening, testing, and parameters for returning to play. For a season to begin for a fall sport a minimum number of schools must be cleared to by local authorities to return to competition. Practices are prohibited from beginning until August 15th. When practices begin, coaches, student-athletes, and those in close contact with the athletes are required to be screened each day a practice or team activity occurs. In a release, the NAIA said the recommendations have been developed based on the information that is available at this time, while prioritizing the health and safety of student-athletes. The NAIA says it will continue to assess these protocols as best practices evolve and will share any necessary adjustments by early August.
Mitchell native Chad Larson will be inducted into the South Dakota Tennis Hall of Fame. He along with two others will be inducted July 19th in Sioux Falls during the South Dakota adult open tennis tournament.
The Mitchell Recreation center will be the host of a basketball skills and drills camp on July 13-16. There will be four sessions per day, with each split up based on age group. Boys and girls from kindergarten through Grade 6, as well as high school girls are welcome. It is $75 per camper. High school girls will play at 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by kindergartners through second graders at 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Grades 6-8 play from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the day concludes from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. for grades 3-5. The coaching staff running the camp includes Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball coach Jason Christensen, DWU women’s assistant coach Celeste Beck, former DWU women’s basketball player and two-time All-American Kynedi Cheeseman and DWU alum and Milbank boys assistant coach Jade Miller.
