Local Sports July 1st

Mitchell Post 18 travels to Yankton for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. on Friday. Mitchell will have the weekend off followed by a trip to Pierre for two games on Tuesday, July 5th.

The Mitchell Junior Legion baseball team extended its winning streak to seven after sweeping Pierre in two games on Thursday 12 to 2 and 9 to 3. Karter Sibson had a pair of hits and three RBIs with Parker Mandel also drove in three runs. Gavin Soukup went six innings allowing seven hits, two unearned runs and four strikeouts. Mason Herman had two hits and three RBIs to lead Mitchell in game two. Colin Stange had two hits and two RBIs. Tyler Sanderson recorded eight strikeouts in six innings pitched for the win. The Junior squad hosts Renner for its final regular season home games on Tuesday.

Mitchell Black split two games against Sioux Falls West Thursday. West won game one 5 to 4 with Mitchell bouncing back to take game two 8 to 5. In game one, Brennen Penne had two hits and Tyler Christensen pitched six innings allowing five runs on three hits, six walks and struck out six. In game two, Dawson Jonnassen had two hits, four RBIs, and earned the win on the mound with five innings pitched. Jonnassen allowed four earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Mitchell Black hosts Renner for two games on Tuesday starting at 1 p.m.

 

Kyson Hermann delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give Mitchell White a 10 to 9 win over Huron on Thursday. Lincoln Bottom added three hits and Dawson Smith two RBIs in the win. Mitchell White hosts Pierre for a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at noon.

The South Dakota State women’s basketball team, the 2022 WNIT champions, will take on South Carolina, the 2022 NCAA women’s basketball national champions, December 15 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. This will be the second all-time meeting between the programs. The first resulted in a 74-52 South Carolina win in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Tickets will go on sale September 13.

Austin Calhoon’s walk-off single in the 12th inning propelled Winner/Colome to a 5 to 4 Sunshine League win over Mount Vernon Thursday. It was the third hit and second RBI of the night for Calhoon. Reed Harter also had three hits and Dillon Lambley added two RBIs for the Pheasants. Briggs Havlik tied the game in the top of the ninth with a two-out RBI single to score Spencer Negebauer. Havlik had two hits and two RBIs and Chase Hetland three hits for Mount Vernon.

Alexandria scored the final seven runs to beat Parkston 7 to 3 on Thursday. Michael Schoettmer led the Angels with two hits and two RBI, while Jerrod Zens smacked a two-run homer. Ethan Davis struck out nine batters, gave up seven hits and three earned runs in the complete-game. Parkston’s Brady Nolz connected on a three-run homer in the first inning and Nate Doering added two hits. Dillon Stadlman allowed five hits, four runs (three earned), walked two batters and struck out two batters in the loss.

Alex Loes hit two home runs including a two-run homer in the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie to lift Plankinton F & M Bankers to a 7 to 5 win over Four Corners Thursday. Loes drove in four runs and Josh Engquist added three hits and an RBI. Engquist earned the win after allowing four hits, one earned run, while striking out three in three innings of relief. Nate Hainy recorded four hits for Four Corners.

Derek Miller finished with three hits and drove in three runs as the Canova Gang beat the Lennox Alpacas 9 to 4. Riley Genzlinger added two hits and two RBI. Kendall Gassman earned the win, striking out five batters, allowing seven hits, four runs (one earned) and walking one batter through seven innings.

Flandreau scored 12 runs in fifth inning and beat Salem 16 to 1 on Thursday night. Aiden Ladd and Jacob Patterson each had three hits for Flandreau, as Ladd drove in a team-high four runs. Brett Severtson pitched all five innings with eight strikeouts.

Kelly O’Bryan’s walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted Colome to a 4 to 3 victory over Chamberlain Thursday. Ben Connot, who scored the game-winning run, finished with three hits and drove in a run. Chamberlain’s Mike Schwartz hit a solo homer and finished with three hits.

The Mitchell High School volleyball summer camp will be held July 11th and 12th at the MHS Gym. The two-day camp is open to all girls entering grades 5-12 at a cost of $65 with separate sessions for middle school and high school students.
