South Dakota State women’s golfers Sydney Bormann, Cassidy Laidlaw and Alex Kandolin were named Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team, announced Monday. The trio are among a total of 1,401 women’s collegiate golfers recognized with this prestigious honor. The criteria for this honor requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. Bormann, a Parkston native, is receiving the honor for the fourth time in her career. The senior graduated with a 4.00 GPA in human biology. She was also recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Women’s At-Large third team and earned her third straight Summit League All-Academic selection. Bormann held a 79.50 stroke average over the 18 rounds she competed in this season. She ranks sixth all-time for State with a career stroke average of 77.78. Laidlaw and Kandolin are both receiving the honor for the first time in their careers.

Three more golfers have committed to the Sanford International, the PGA Tour Champions event scheduled for September. Angel Cabrera, the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters champion, will play in Sioux Falls. Cabrera’s Masters win came in a playoff over Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry. Cabrera played on President’s Cup International teams in 2005, ‘07, ‘09, and ‘13. Fred Funk also has signed up. Funk has won nine times in PGA Tour Champions, including three majors. He played on the 2004 American Ryder Cup team and on the U.S. President’s Cup teams in 2003 and ‘05. Funk became the oldest player to win The Players Championship at age 48 in 2005. Also coming to Sioux Falls will be Kirk Triplett, who tied for tenth last year on his way to a top 10 finish in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Triplett has 17 professional wins in his career. The Sanford International is scheduled for September 11-13 at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota State University baseball player Gus Steiger has opted to pursue a professional career, signing a free agent contract Saturday with the Cincinnati Reds. A native of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Steiger was a career .319 hitter for the Jackrabbits, batting above .300 in each of his three seasons at SDSU. He was a two-time all-Summit League selection.

Mitchell Post 18 hosts Sioux Falls East Wednesday and is at Pierre Thursday. The Mitchell Junior Legion baseball team returns to Sioux Falls to play West in a doubleheader Thursday at 5 p.m. Mitchell White travels to Pierre Wednesday and Yankton Thursday for doubleheaders. Mitchell Black hosts Yankton for a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. Black hosts Sioux Falls East Thursday for two games starting at 4 p.m.

Due to a scheduling conflict, Dimock-Emery will host Lennox tonight in Emery instead of Lennox. First pitch right around 7:30. Alexandria hosts Parkston Thursday night; Dimock/Emery hosts Menno Thursday; Plankinton travels to Chamberlain; South Central is at Colome; and Miller hosts Kimball-White Lake. Platte plays Corsica-Stickney Friday in Corsica and Saturday night in Platte.
