MITCHELL, S.D. – The Mitchell Kernels dominated the Douglas Patriots 69-0 on Saturday night in the 11th annual Kernel Bowl at Joe Quintal Field.
Mitchell scored five touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 34-0 lead. Mason Kempf opened the scoring with a 55-yard touchdown run, followed by Samari Wright’s 8-yard and 64-yard touchdown runs.
Lawson LeBrun caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brady Hoesing, and Jontay Julien added a 69-yard touchdown reception from Hoesing to close the first-quarter scoring.
The Kernels added three more touchdowns in the second quarter. Tayven Red Day scored on a 15-yard run, Kempf added a 6-yard touchdown run and Wright broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run to give Mitchell a 55-0 halftime lead.
Kyson Herrmann scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter, and Matt Peterson returned a Douglas fumble 25 yards for a touchdown to complete the scoring.
Mitchell finished with 480 yards of total offense, including 387 rushing yards on 31 carries and 93 passing yards. The Kernels scored seven rushing touchdowns.
Douglas was held to 114 total yards. Jericho Morgan led the Patriots with 66 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Mitchell improves to 2-1 and will travel to Aberdeen Central next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Douglas falls to 1-2.
