CLASS B STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
— The Alexandria Angels won their sixth Class B state amateur baseball championship and first since 2020 with a 12-2, seven inning victory over Clark on Sunday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. Alexandria scored nine runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take a 12-0 lead. Dakota Munger threw a complete game, allowing two runs and nine hits with eight strikeouts. He also drove in three runs and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Angels finished the season 21-3, while Clark finished 10-9.
CLASS A STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
— The Harrisburg Woodies defeated Renner 3-1 Sunday at Cadwell Park, winning the Class A state title for the second straight year. Tanner Brown threw a complete game for the Woodies, allowing one run and five hits with 15 strikeouts.
MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell girls soccer team opened its season with a 9-0 shutout of Huron on Friday at Joe Quintal Field. Senior Taryn Thomas scored four goals and added an assist as the Kernels had a 6-0 halftime lead. Malia Reitzel recorded the shutout in goal for Mitchell. The Kernels host Spearfish on Friday at 6 p.m.
— Mitchell boys soccer team opened its season with a 4-2 win over Huron on Friday at Joe Quintal Field. The Kernels scored all four goals in the first half. Mitchell hosts Spearfish on Friday at 4 p.m.
— Mitchell girls tennis split two duals at the Sioux Falls Christian Invitational, beating Watertown 8-1 on Thursday before falling to Sioux Falls Christian 7-2 on Friday at Tomar Park. The Kernels swept all five of their top singles flights against Watertown, led by Mia Larson’s 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Mitchell also swept all three doubles matches. Mitchell, 3-1 in duals this season, returns home Monday to host Brookings at 10 a.m. and Sioux Falls Jefferson at 4 p.m. at Hitchcock Park.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of wins on Saturday, 3-0 vs. Rocky Mountain (Mont.) and 3-0 vs. Our Lady of the Lake (Tx.). The Tigers return from San Antionio to compete at the Siouxland Invitational next weekend. DWU takes on Corban (Ore.) on Friday at 10 am, followed by Mayville State at 4 pm in Sioux City.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer played to a 0-0 tie at Gillette College on Friday in an exhibition match in Wyoming. On Sunday, the Tigers defeated Iowa Lake Community College 4-0 in Mitchell in their final exhibition before the regular season. DWU will be at Bellevue (Neb.) on Thursday at 5:30 pm to begin the regular season.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will host the University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday for an exhibition match at 3 pm at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer set a school record Sunday with an 11-0 victory over MSU Moorhead. The Jackrabbits scored seven goals in the first half and four more after halftime. Jenna Maloy and Peyton Held each scored twice, with Held recording the first two goals of her college career. SDSU also set team records with 36 points and 14 assists while holding Moorhead without a shot. SDSU improves to 2-0 and hosts Washington State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s soccer battled Nebraska to a 1-1 draw Sunday in Lincoln. Freshman Kinsley Pesicka scored in the 42nd minute to give the Coyotes a halftime lead. Nebraska tied the match in the 83rd minute. South Dakota goalkeeper Cambell Fischer made eight saves, including seven in the second half, to help preserve the draw. USD is 1-0-1 and will play at Green Bay on Thursday at 3 p.m.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Bryan De La Cruz hit a two-run single in the eighth inning as the Philadelphia Philles overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 7-5 and sweep the three-game series. Brooks Lee hit a grand slam for Minnesota in the first inning, while Kody Clemens added a solo HR as the Twins had a 5-0 lead after five innings. Minnesota fell to 4-10 in August. The Twins start a three-game home series vs. the Atlanta Braves on Monday at 6:40 pm.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— The Minnesota Vikings will be without veteran defender Jamal Adams for the 2026 season because of a right knee injury suffered in Saturday’s 13-10 preseason win over the New York Giants. Adams was injured early in the second quarter when he stumbled in pass coverage without contact and fell to the turf. The 30-year-old Adams signed with Minnesota before training camp and had been working at safety after playing linebacker last season with the Raiders.
MLB
— Tommy John, the longtime major league pitcher whose pioneering elbow surgery became known by his name, has died at 83. John died Saturday night at his home in Florida, after being in hospice care. He won 288 games over a 26-year career with six teams and was a four-time All-Star. In 1974, John tore the UCL ligament in his pitching elbow. Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe replaced the damaged ligament with a tendon from John’s forearm, a procedure that saved his career and became known as Tommy John surgery. John returned to pitch in 1976 and went on to win 164 games after the surgery. More than 2,600 major leaguers have since undergone the procedure. John finished his career with a 288-231 record and a 3.34 ERA. He never reached the Baseball Hall of Fame.
WNBA
— Olivia Miles had 23 points and eight assists, while Napheesa Collier added 19 points as the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx beat the Las Vegas Aces 92-87 on Saturday. Minnesota improved to 29-7 on the season.
— Makayla Timpson scored a career-high 20 points, including Indiana’s first three field goals in overtime, as the Fever beat the Atlanta Dream 95-91 to protect their hold on fourth place in the WNBA standings. Atlanta’s Allisha Gray matching her career high with 32 points. Caitlin Clark scored 26 points and added nine assists.
NBA
— The Minnesota Timberwolves will retire Kevin Garnett’s No. 21 jersey after their Feb. 28 game against the Boston Celtics. Garnett will become just the second player in Timberwolves history to have his number retired, joining the late Malik Sealy. Garnett spent his first 12 NBA seasons in Minnesota, won the 2004 MVP award and led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference finals. He was traded to Boston in 2007 and won an NBA championship in his first season with the Celtics. Garnett returned to Minnesota in 2015 and finished his 21-year career with the Timberwolves. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks, assists and steals.
NFL
— Von Miller is set to sign with his hometown Dallas Cowboys as the NFL’s active leader in sacks has agreed to a one-year contract for what will be his third team in three seasons. Miller is expected to arrive at training camp on Monday. Dallas has only two full practices remaining in its annual three-week California excursion. The Cowboys break camp before their second preseason game at Arizona on Saturday. Miller, who has 138 ½ sacks over 14 seasons, had nine sacks last year with Washington.
FLAG FOOTBALL
— The U.S. men’s flag football team won its sixth straight world championship Sunday, beating Italy 46-26 Germany. The U.S. women fell to Canada 27-20 in the women’s final, ending their run of three straight world titles. The tournament served as a qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The U.S. teams already qualified as the host nation, while Canada’s men and women and Mexico’s women earned Olympic spots through the tournament.
PGA
— Scottie Scheffler opened up the PGA Tour postseason with an eight-shot victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Scheffler closed with a 4-under 66 to finish at 17-under. The victory is Scheffler’s 21st PGA Tour title and his first in nearly seven months. Si Woo Kim finished second, eight shots back. Scheffler also clinched $23 million in FedEx Cup bonus money for remaining No. 1 heading into next week’s BMW Championship.
MLB
— Milwaukee’s Logan Henderson allowed one run in seven innings, while Jake Bauers had four hits and two RBIs as the Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 to take three of four in the series. Milwaukee is three games ahead of L.A. in the race for the National League’s best record.
— Munetaka Murakami hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning as the Chicago White Sox rallied for a 7-5 win over the Detroit Tigers to complete a three-game sweep. Chicago trailed 3-0 and 4-1, but scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to tie the game. The White Sox have a 5 ½ game lead over Detroit and Cleveland in the AL Central.
— Luis Rengifo and Gavin Sheets hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning, while Casey Mize allowed three hits in six shutout innings as San Diego defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-0. The Padres are a major league best 17-5 since July 24.
— Ben Rice hit a tiebreaking home run in the 10th inning as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 to avoid a three-game sweep.
— Kansas City’s Noah Cameron pitched a one-hitter, while Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr. hit home runs as the Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-0. Cameron struck out eight and walked one, throwing 115 pitches in nine innings.
— Colton Cowser hit a two-run homer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand had a three-run double in a seven-run sixth as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-2. Baltimore now holds a ½ game lead over Texas for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena homered to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros.
— Matt Olson hit a three-run homer, leading the Atlanta Braves past the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3.
— Bryan Reynolds, Brandon Lowe, and Nick Yorke each had two RBIs to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Boston Red Sox 8-3 after a 2 ½ hour rain delay.
— Zack Gelof and Lawrence Butler each hit two-run homers, while Tommy White had his first major league homer as the Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 5-2. The A’s won their first home series in West Sacramento since April 30.
— Christian Scott pitched into the seventh inning and Luis Torrens hit a two-run homer in the New York Mets 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals.
— Heriberto Hernández and Javier Sanoja hit home runs to lift the Miami Marlins over the Cincinnati Reds 7-1.
