MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels gymnastics picked up a triangular victory on Friday night at home with a team score of 144.10 points to defeat O’Gorman (128.85) and Huron (116.10). Kernels senior Kyanna Gropper won all five individual events and won the all-around with a score of 38.20. It was also the first gymnastics meet at the new high school gym. Mitchell will host the Jill McCormick Invitational on Saturday at 11 am at the high school gym with 15 teams scheduled to compete.

— Mitchell Kernels wrestling competed at the Rapid City Invitational over the weekend. Blaze Sevigny (106) led the Mitchell boys with a fourth-place finish, while Rocky Clark placed fifth at heavyweight. Frankie Kranz led the Mitchell girls with a sixth place finish at 115 pounds, while Taylor DeJong had a seventh-place finish at 155 pounds. Kernels wrestling host Huron for a home dual on Thursday with the girls starting at 6 pm and the boys at 7 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels basketball starts its season on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Watertown. The girls play at 6 pm, followed by the boys at 7:45 pm. The KORNer Booth pregame show starts at 5 pm on KORN News Radio.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 14 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball picked up a 96-41 in over the College of St. Mary at the Corn Palace on Saturday. Emma Yost and Avery Orth led six Tigers in double figures with 16 points each. DWU outrebounded St. Mary 59-18. The Tigers improved to 7-4 on the season and will travel to Hawaii next week for two games. DWU takes on Providence (Mont.) on Thursday at 3 pm, followed by Campbellsville (Kent.) on Friday at 5:15 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball, 5-7 on the season, hosts Northwestern on Wednesday at 7 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball forced 27 turnovers and rolled past Ball State 78-59 on Sunday, winning their fifth straight game and extending their home winning streak to 16. Freshman Mahli Abdouch tied a school record with 10 steals and added 10 points, while Brooklyn Meyer had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. All five SDSU starters scored in double figures as the Jackrabbits improved to 10-2 on the season. SDSU will be at Duke on Thursday at 6 pm CST.

— South Dakota State men’s basketball defeated Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night 94-62. Kalen Garry had a game-high 20 points for the Jackrabbits, Joe Sayler added 16 points, and Damon Wilkinson had 15 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Meanwhile, Tyson Stevenson led the Tigers with 14 points and Easton Neuendorf had 10 points. SDSU improves to 7-5 on the season and will take on Wyoming at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Monday at 7 pm. Dakota Wesleyan, 5-7 on the season, hosts Northwestern on Wednesday at 7 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football had its season come to an end on Saturday with a 52-22 loss at No. 3 Montana in the FCS quarterfinals. Montana jumped out to a 24-0 lead early in the second quarter and advanced to the semifinals to face No. 2 Montana State next Saturday. USD WR Larenzo Fenner became the first Coyote in the Division I FCS era to eclipse 1,000 career receiving yards with his 18-yard reception in the third quarter. L.J. Phillips Jr. ended the day as the leading rusher with 74 yards on 15 carries. QB Aiden Bouman went 15-for-32 for 231 yards and two touchdown passes. USD ends the season with a 10-5 record.

— Isaac Bruns and Cameron Fens set new career highs to lead USD men’s basketball to a 97-85 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. Bruns, who has now reset his career-high in three of the last five games, had a game high 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting with eight rebounds. Fens finished with a career-best 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and 14 rebounds which was also a new career-high.

— USD women’s basketball will be at Pepperdine on Wednesday at 8 pm CST. The Coyotes fell to 8-3 on the season after a 65-62 loss at Bradley on Wednesday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza made history Saturday night, becoming the first Heisman Trophy winner in Hoosiers football history. Mendoza led Indiana to its first-ever No. 1 ranking and the top seed in the College Football Playoff, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and a nation-leading 33 touchdown passes.

— Julius Randle had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead Minnesota past the Sacramento Kings 117-103 in the Timberwolves’ second straight game without Anthony Edwards. Jaden McDaniels scored 21 points and Naz Reid added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves (17-9). They have won seven of eight.

— LeBron James made two free throws with 3.9 seconds left, while Luka Doncic scored 29 points as the Los Angeles Lakers recovered from blowing a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter to defeat the Phoenix Suns 116-114.

— Jerami Grant and Shaedon Sharpe scored 35 points apiece as the Portland Trail Blazers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 136-131 win over the Golden State Warriors. Steph Curry had 48 points for the Warriors. He hit a season-high 12 3-pointers, the 28th time he’s had 10 or more in a game.

— The Brooklyn Nets matched a franchise record for margin of victory, in a 127-82 blowout over the Milwaukee Bucks. The 45-point victory tied the team record set in Jan. 1993 against Washington.

— Rookie Kon Knueppel scored 29 points as the Charlotte Hornets shut out Cleveland in overtime on their way to a road victory, 119-111 over the Cavaliers. Cleveland was outscored 8-0 in overtime.

NFL – WEEK 15
— J.J. McCarthy threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score, while C.J. Ham had the go-ahead TD on his first carry of the season as the Minnesota Vikings damaged Dallas’ playoff hopes with a 34-26 victory over the Cowboys. The Vikings won a second consecutive game after they were eliminated from the postseason race before the kickoff. The Cowboys have to win their three remaining games and hope that Philadelphia goes 0-3 in order for Dallas to overtake the Eagles in the NFC East. Both of McCarthy’s TD passed were to Jalen Nailor. The Vikings take on the New York Giants next Sunday at Noon

— The Los Angeles Chargers eliminate the Kansas City Chiefs from playoff contention with a 16-13 victory on Sunday, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tearing the ACL in his left knee. The Chargers complete a regular season sweep of Kansas City to improve to 10-4 on the season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ playoff hopes officially ended with the loss.

— Green Bay pass rusher Micah Parsons injured his left knee on a non-contact play as the Packers lost at Denver 34-26. Parsons was chasing after Broncos quarterback Bo Nix in the third quarter on Sunday when he suddenly pulled up and fell to the ground. He clutched his knee as trainers and teammates came over to check on him.

— Seattle’s Jason Myers kicked a franchise-record six field goals, including a 56-yarder with 29 seconds left, as the Seahawks defeated 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers and the Indianapolis Colts 18-16. Rivers threw a touchdown pass to make his first start in nearly five years, and he led the Colts into position for a go-ahead, 60-yard field goal with 47 seconds left. That was enough time for Sam Darnold and the Seahawks (11-3) to drive for the game winning 56-yarder.

— Matthew Stafford passed for 368 yards and hit Colby Parkinson for two touchdowns, as the NFC-leading Los Angeles Rams clinched a playoff berth with a second-half rally for a 41-34 victory over the Detroit Lions. Kyren Williams rushed for two scores and Blake Corum added another TD for the Rams, who came back from a double-digit deficit shortly before halftime with 20 consecutive points before securing their eighth victory in nine games. Amon-Ra St. Brown had 13 catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns for Detroit.

— The Buffalo Bills have kept themselves in the race for the AFC East title as Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes, and James Cook ran for two TDs and caught another as Buffalo rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat the New England Patriots 35-31. The Bills prevented the Patriots from clinching the division. The Bills also overcame a double-digit deficit for the third time this year. The Patriots lost their first division game of the season and had their 10-game win streak come to an end.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Miami Dolphins, 7:15 pm on Monday Night Football, ESPN
Pittsburgh (7-6) hold a half game lead over Baltimore for first place in the AFC North. Miami is looking to game back to .500 as the Dolphins have won four games in a row.
