MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Gymnastics finished runner-up at the ESD Conference meet in Aberdeen on Saturday. The Kernels scored 146.725, second only to Harrisburg in the eight-team field. Mitchell was led by a big day in the all-around, with Kyanna Gropper placing second overall and Olivia Prunty right behind in third. Prunty finished second and Gropper placed third in bars. The Kernels will compete in a last-chance state qualifier on Saturday in Watertown, then return home to host the Class AA State Gymnastics Meet on February 13th and 14th at Mitchell High School.

— Mitchell Kernels Wrestling had two individual champions on Saturday at an Invite in Brookings. Senior Taylor DeJong captured the girls 155-pound title, earning three pins on the day to improve to 23-6 this season. On the boys side, Noah Bennett won the 132-pound title, defeating Pierre’s Walker West 4–3 in the championship match. Mitchell also picked up runner-up finishes from Frankie Kranz at 115 pounds and Danny Borja at 120 on the girls side. The Kernels are at Pierre on Thursday with the girls dual starting at 6 pm, followed by the boys at 7 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels basketball takes on SF Jefferson on Tuesday night with the girls and home and the boys in Sioux Falls. KORN News Radio will have coverage of the girls contest, with the pregame show starting at 6:45 pm and tip-off set for 7 pm. The Mitchell girls improved to 9-3 on the season with a 51-7 win vs. SF Lincoln on Friday. The Kernels have won eight straight games.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball ran its winning streak to 13 on Saturday afternoon with a 95-77 win over Hastings. After trailing by one at the half, the Tigers outscored Hastings by 19 points in the second half. Avery Broughton finished with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds, Emma Yost added 24 points and six rebounds, while Rylee Rosenquist had 22 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. DWU, 19-4 overall and 15-2 in the GPAC, will be at Doane on Sunday, February 8 at Noon.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball got back to over .500 on the season with an 83-70 home win vs. Hastings on Saturday. Easton Neuendorf had a game-high 25 points, Anthony Riggans added 22 points, while Randy Rosenquist Jr. finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. DWU 12-11 overall on the season and 7-8 in the GPAC, will be at Doane next Sunday, February 8 at 1:45 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State men’s basketball picked up a 95-72 win vs. Oral Roberts on Saturday, behind a season-high 58 first half points. Jaden Jackson and Joe Sayler finished with 24 points each. Jackson added a career best five steals, while Sayler was 9-of-12 shooting from the field with seven assists. SDSU, 11-12 overall and 4-4 in the Summit League, host St. Thomas on Wednesday at 6 pm.

— No. 15 South Dakota State wrestling picked up a pair of home dual wins over the weekend, defeating Air Force 37-5 on Friday and Northern Colorado on Sunday 31-10. The Jackrabbits will host No. 14 Northern Iowa on Sunday at 1 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s basketball ended a seven-game losing streak vs. South Dakota State, defeating the Jackrabbits 73-54. After holding just a two-point halftime lead, the Coyotes outscored SDSU by 17 points in the second half. Brooklyn Meyer scored a game-high 27 points for the Jackrabbits, along with eight rebounds. USD’s Angelina Robles scored 25 points, while Elise Turrubiates added 19 points and 12 rebounds. SDSU will be at St. Thomas on Wednesday at 7 pm, while USD travels to Denver on Thursday at 7 pm CST.

— USD men’s basketball forced overtime on Saturday night, only to lose 89-84 at home to North Dakota State. Jordan Crawford finished with a game-high 33 points for the Coyotes, while Uzziah Buntyn added 25 points. NDSU had six players score in double figures. USD trailed by 14 points at halftime and tied the game at 74-74 on a Crawford layup with 20 second left in regulation. The Coyotes fall to 12-12 on the season with the loss and 4-5 in the Summit League. USD will be at Kansas City on Wednesday at 7 pm.

— The Las Vegas Raiders are working toward finalizing an agreement to make Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak their head coach. The Raiders would not be allowed to announce a deal with Kubiak until after Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Seahawks and New England Patriots. The 38-year-old Kubiak would be the third coach in three seasons for the Raiders and the fifth full-time leader since they moved to Las Vegas in 2020.

— The Arizona Cardinals have hired L.A. Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their next head coach The 38 year-old replaces Jonathan Gannon, who was fired on Jan. 5 after a 15-36 record over three seasons, including 3-14 this past season. LaFleur, who is the younger brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, has been the Rams’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

MLB
— Eugenio Suárez and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed on a $15 million, one-year contract. Suárez was the top slugger left on the free agent market as the two-time All-Star returns to Cincinnati, where he played seven seasons. He hit 189 home runs for the Reds from 2015 through 2021, including 49 in 2019. The 34-year-old hit 49 HR’s last season between Arizona and Seattle.

— LeBron James is an All-Star again, marking his 22nd consecutive selection. The NBA announced the reserves on Sunday for the game on Feb. 15 in Inglewood, California, including LeBron. The reserves from the Eastern Conference are Donovan Mitchell, Karl-Anthony Towns, Pascal Siakam, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Duren, Norman Powell and Jalen Johnson. From the Western Conference, the other reserves are Anthony Edwards, Jamal Murray, Chet Holmgren, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Deni Avdija.

— OG Anunoby scored 25 points and Landry Shamet added 23 as the New York Knicks beat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-100. Josh Hart finished with 20 points and Jalen Brunson had 12 points and a season-high 13 assists for the Knicks, who matched a season high with their sixth straight win. LeBron James finished with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds. Luka Doncic led L.A. with 30 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists.

— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points and Cason Wallace added a career-best 27, including seven 3-pointers, as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets 121-111. Gilgeous-Alexander had 13 assists as the Thunder made 19 3-pointers.

— Victor Wembanyama had 25 points, eight rebounds and five blocks as San Antonio beat the Orlando Magic 112-103 on Sunday night in a game that started five hours late because of the Spurs’ travel issues. The Spurs were scheduled to leave Charlotte on Saturday, but had to stay overnight because of a storm that dropped nearly a foot of snow. The team then had a mechanical issue on its flight. The game was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. but was pushed back to 6 p.m. and then 8 p.m. as the Spurs returned home nearly 24 hours later than planned.

— Jalen Duren had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Detroit Pistons routed the Brooklyn Nets 130-77 in the most-lopsided victory in franchise history. Cade Cunningham added 18 points, 12 assists and four steals for Detroit.

— Bam Adebayo and Pelle Larsson each had 20 points as the Miami Heat tied their third-largest victory margin ever in a 134-91 rout of the Chicago Bulls.

— Jarrett Allen scored a career-high 40 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Portland Trail Blazers their fifth straight loss with a 130-111 victory.

— Kawhi Leonard scored 25 points as the Los Angeles Clippers routed the Phoenix Suns 117-93 on Sunday night. Leonard had eight rebounds as well as his 27th consecutive game with 20 or more points.

— Jaylen Brown had 30 points and 13 rebounds, while Anfernee Simons scored 27 points off the bench as the Boston Celtics coasted to a 107-79 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.
