PALACE CITY LEGION BASEBALL
— Palace City 14-and-under baseball wrapped up its season with a state tournament semifinal appearance in Pierre over the weekend. Palace City went 3-2, opening bracket play on Sunday with a 9-6 over Tea, scoring five runs in the fourth inning. In the semis, Palace City lost to Harrisburg 15-5 after a nine-run third inning. Palace City ends the season with a 17-28 record.
— Palace City’s 13-and-under baseball team ended its season at the state tournament in Brookings, finishing pool play with a 1-2 record. Palace City opened the tournament with losses to Watertown and Harrisburg before closing the season with a 15-5 victory over Renner.
DISTRICT 3B AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – CHAMBERLAIN
Kimball/White Lake 12, Burke 2 – KWL scored seven runs in the third inning. Ethan Price had 12 strikeouts over seven innings. Trent Wookey added three hits and scored three runs.

Wessington Springs 10, Plankinton 9 – Cade Mohling singled to score Jonathan Peterson with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning. Layne Cotton had four hits and five RBI’s. The Bankers are eliminated.

— Ryan Jeffers went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while Connor Prielipp threw 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his return from the injured list as the Minnesota Twins beat the Athletics 11-8 in the rubber match of a three-game series. Kody Clemens was 3 for 5 with two triples and an RBI, while Ryan Kreidler doubled three times and drove in a run for the Twins. Minnesota improved to 53-54 on the season and pulled within one game of Cleveland for the final Wild Card in the American League. The Twins have today off before starting a three-game home series vs. the last place Kansas City Royals on Tuesday at 6:40 pm.

— Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday during ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York. The trio joined baseball’s elite in front of an estimated crowd of 12,000 fans and 57 current Hall of Famers. Jones paid tribute to his home of Curaçao, becoming the first player from the island to enter the Hall of Fame. Beltrán celebrated his Puerto Rican roots and thanked the organizations that helped build his 20-year career, including the New York Mets, whose cap he chose for his Hall of Fame plaque. Kent, the 2000 National League MVP and all-time home run leader among second basemen, was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.

— Jackson Koivun captured his first PGA Tour victory Sunday, winning the 3M Open in just his third start as a professional. The 21-year-old held off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three strokes, finishing with a tournament-record 25-under after a final-round 5-under 66 at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota. Scheffler made a late push with a 9-under 63. Koivun earned nearly $1.6 million for the win and became the fourth rookie to win on the PGA Tour this season.

— Rookie Corey Heim pulled off a final restart pass Sunday and held on to win the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his first NASCAR Cup Series victory. The 24-year-old made an aggressive move around team co-owner Denny Hamlin with 35 laps remaining, then held off Christopher Bell and Joey Logano over the final laps. Heim became the first Cup driver since 1965 to win twice in his first 15 career starts. The Cup Series takes a week off before returning August 9th in Iowa.

— Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett has a new contract and is expected to be the team’s starter when the season opens. Brissett and the Cardinals agreed Sunday to a reworked one-year deal worth a reported $15.5 million dollars. The 33-year-old veteran was unhappy with his previous contract and missed offseason work while negotiations continued. Brissett started the final 12 games last season after Kyler Murray suffered a season-ending injury, throwing for a career-high 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
— CBS NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office’s arrest report, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests after getting stopped while driving south on Interstate 43 on Thursday. Romo was taken into custody, booked and released. He has a court appearance set for Sept. 21. Romo went to high school about 35 miles from Milwaukee in Burlington, Wisconsin. The 46-year-old Romo has been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017. CBS had no comment regarding the arrest.
— San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered a concussion and other injuries in a car crash earlier this month that will limit his participation at the start of training camp, the team announced Saturday, when camp opened. The two-car accident happened on July 14 in Palo Alto, leading to Shanahan being taken to the hospital. The other driver was not hospitalized. There was no evidence that either driver was impaired and that both cooperated with police. No one was cited in the collision. 49ers general manager John Lynch said Shanahan sustained a concussion, along with a broken nose, broken ribs and an injured hand.

— Jacob Misiorowski set a Brewers franchise record by striking out seven straight hitters to open the game in an 11-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. Misiorowski finished with 12 strikeouts over five innings and reached 100 mph on 66 of his 83 pitches and hit a top velocity of 104.7.
— Jarren Duran drove in two runs with one of his three singles, while Jhmai Jones had a pinch-hit two-run double as the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1. Boston has won its past six series and opens a seven-game West Coast trip Monday against the Athletics. The Red Sox have won 17 of their past 19 overall.
— Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen allowed one hit through seven innings, while Cedric Mullins drove in the only run of the game on a bunt single as the Rays finished off a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians with a 1-0 victory.
— Bryson Stott homered, doubled and drove in five runs as the Philadelphia Phillies avoided a three-game sweep with an 11-4 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday night.
— Dominic Canzone put Seattle ahead with a three-run homer in the seventh inning as the Mariners rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Texas Rangers. Seattle is 1.5 games back of first place Texas in the AL West.
— Ryan O’Hearn hit a grand slam as the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the Chicago Cubs 8-7 to avoid being swept in the three-game series. Pittsburgh stayed one game behind Arizona for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
— Munetaka Murakami homered twice and drove in a season-high six runs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros 12-3. The White Sox hold a 2.5 game lead over Cleveland and a 3.5 game lead over the Twins in the AL Central.
— Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill homered in the eighth inning as the San Diego Padres overcame an early three-run deficit to beat Miami 5-3, extending the Marlins’ losing streak to a franchise-record 12. Miami has not won since an 8-4 victory on July 9.
— Matt Olson caught Gunnar Henderson’s line drive and stepped on first for a double play in the bottom of the 10th, while Austin Riley’s RBI double an inning later lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in 11 innings.
— Tyrone Taylor put the Mets ahead with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, while Marcus Semien added a three-run shot in the seventh as New York beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3.
— Sal Stewart drove in the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit single in the 10th inning as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3.
— Mike Trout had his first four-hit game in more than five years, while Jorge Soler and Jo Adell homered as the Los Angeles Angels beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3.
— Michael Massey hit a go-ahead, two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4.
