PALACE CITY LEGION BASEBALL

— Palace City Post 18 will be at Brookings on Tuesday for a 5 pm doubleheader. Palace City is 17-15 on the season with a 10-11 record vs. Class A teams after splitting a doubleheader at Aberdeen on Thursday.

— Palace City Junior Legion baseball hosts Aberdeen for a doubleheader on Tuesday.

SDGA GOLF
— Mitchell’s Kendall Aadland captured a second-place finish in the girls 12-to-13 division at the South Dakota Golf Association Junior Mini Tour stop at Two Rivers Golf Club in Dakota Dunes. Aadland shot a nine-hole score of 53, finishing behind Nichole Yang of Dakota Dunes, who shot a 46. In the boys 10-to-11 division, Brandon’s Miles Lunning took home the victory with a 2-over-par 37, while Adam Tschumper of Lake Andes edged out Mitchell’s Brooks Aadland for second place after both finished with a 43.

AMATEUR BASEBALL
Parkston Devil Rays 10, Aberdeen Circus 9 – Parkston trailed by as many as eight runs before scoring nine times over the final two innings. Dylan Soulek had three RBI’s with a double, while Landon Sudbeck added three hits and a pair of RBI’s. Nolan Dvorak got the win throwing four shutout innings in relief.

Tabor 8, Freeman 0 – Riley Rothschadel with 17 strikeouts for Tabor, allowing one hit over seven shutout innings on 83 pitches.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Joe Ryan scattered three hits in seven scoreless innings as the Minnesota Twins won a series at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 2014 with a 6-1 victory over New York. Ryan walked one and tied his season high with nine strikeouts. He became the first Twins pitcher to throw at least seven scoreless innings for Minnesota at Yankee Stadium since Johan Santana in 2005. The Twins outscored the Yankees 17-5 in the final two games of the series. Byron Buxton left the game after re-aggravating a previous hip injury as he was caught stealing second in the first inning. Minnesota hosts Cleveland for three games starting on Tuesday.

The U.S. will look to make history Monday when they take on ninth-ranked Belgium for a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. A victory in Seattle would give the seventeenth-ranked Americans back-to-back World Cup knockout wins for the first time ever.

SOCCER
— In an unprecedented move, FIFA has lifted the red-card suspension of U.S. star forward Folarin Balogun, making him eligible for Monday’s World Cup knockout match against Belgium. The decision comes after Donald Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the penalty. Balogun, who leads the U.S. with three goals in the tournament, was ejected on Wednesday during a match against Bosnia. FIFA’s ruling marks the first time since 1962 that a World Cup red card did not result in an automatic suspension, drawing strong praise from U.S. officials but triggering outrage and allegations of unfair play from the Belgian team.

TENNIS
— Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka is through to her first career Wimbledon quarterfinal. Osaka defeated top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, winning 6-2, 7-6. It marks Osaka’s first victory over a number-one player since 2019. In other action at the All England Club, American Coco Gauff rallied to beat Belinda Bencic, advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic broke Roger Federer’s record for the most match victories at Wimbledon, securing his 106th win by defeating Roman Safiullin.

GOLF
— Chris Gotterup fired a nine-under-par 62 today to erase a five-shot deficit and win the John Deere Classic on Sunday. Gotterup finished at 20-under to secure his fourth PGA Tour title in the last 12 months, moving him to number seven in the world rankings. He avoided a playoff when runner-up Ben Kohles hit his approach shot into the water on the 18th hole, finishing with a double bogey. Max Homa shot a final-round 64 to finish alone in second place.

NASCAR
— Chase Briscoe held off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell to win NASCAR’s Cup Series race Sunday night in the sport’s return to Chicagoland Speedway. Briscoe earned his first victory of the season and the sixth Cup Series win of his career after fending off Bell over the closing laps on the 1.5-mile oval. Bell finished second for the fourth time this season despite continuing to recover from a broken left wrist suffered in June. Pole-sitter Denny Hamlin finished third, followed by William Byron and Alex Bowman. NASCAR returned to Chicagoland for the first time since 2019 after holding its previous three races at the Chicago Street Course. Toyota drivers dominated the event, placing seven cars in the top 10. The Cup Series heads to EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, next weekend.

MLB
— Eury Pérez pitched seven perfect innings before getting lifted by Miami manager Clayton McCullough as the Marlins nearly squandered an eight-run lead in a 9-8 victory over the Athletics. Pérez struck out a season-high eight and retired all 21 batters he faced. Heriberto Hernández homered twice for the Marlins, who have won nine of 12 overall after completing a three-game sweep to improve to 49-42 on the season.

— The White sox Colson Montgomery hit a two-run homer, while Kyle Teel and Tristan Peters added solo shots as Chicago beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-6 to split a four-game series between the top two teams in the AL Central’s top teams. The win moved the White Sox back into first place by one game over Cleveland and four games over Minnesota.

— Milwaukee’s Jake Bauers homered off Arizona All-Star Eduardo Rodríguez in the seventh inning as the Brewers defeated the Diamondbacks 3-2.

— Detroit’s Riley Greene homered, tripled and drove in four runs for the Tigers in a 6-3 win over the Texas Rangers.

— Salvador Perez drove in two runs and Luinder Avile went five innings allowing just one run as the Kansas City Royals snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

— Emerson Hancock and the Mariners bullpen extended Seattle’s scoreless streak to 24 innings, while Mitch Garver hit a two-run homer in a 4-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto was shut out in consecutive games for the first time this season and has now won just two of its last 10 to drop six games under .500.

— Juan Soto’s two-run single in the second inning gave New York the lead as the Mets held off Atlanta’s ninth-inning comeback attempt to beat the Braves 10-9. New York led Atlanta 10-3 after five runs in the ninth inning.

— Nico Hoerner drove in two run and Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits as the Chicago Cubs rallied for four runs in the sixth inning top the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 to avoid a series sweep.

— Manny Machado hit a three-run homer as the San Diego Padres snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

— Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras homered as five Boston pitchers combined to give up two runs over 6 1/3 innings in relief of injured starter Ranger Suarez to lead the Red Sox to a 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

— Houston’s Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes hit solo home runs, while four pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Houston Astros beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0.

— Konnor Griffin had a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Washington Nationals 11-5.

— Spencer Steer broke up a scoreless game with his 14th home run this season, while Nick Lodolo pitched six scoreless innings as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2.

— Kyle Karros hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Colorado Rockies the lead in a 7-6 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
