PALACE CITY LEGION BASEBALL
— Palace City Post 18 Legion baseball finished 1-3 at the Dakota Classic over the weekend in Brandon. After splitting its opening two pool play games on Friday, Post 18 lost 10-0 on Saturday to Elkhorn North (Neb.). In game two on Saturday, Post 18 lost to Brandon Valley 13-2 in five innings. Jaxson Hartman hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Palace City (7-7) hosts the Helena (Mont.) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Cadwell Park.
— Palace City Post 18 Junior Legion baseball went 2-2 over the weekend, finishing play at the three-day Dakota Classic Tournament in Sioux Falls. Post 18 closed the tournament Sunday with a 7-6 win over Waverly (Neb.). Waverly scored four runs in the first inning, but Post 18 answered with five straight runs and added two more in the third. In Friday pool play, Palace City defeated Ralston (Neb.) 13-5, scoring six runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. On Saturday, Post 18 dropped two games, falling 10-7 to Lincoln North Star (Neb.) and 17-0 to Omaha (Neb.) in three innings. Post 18 (10-9) will host Harrisburg in a doubleheader Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Drake Field.
— Palace City 14U baseball returns to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Renner at Cadwell Park at Noon.
— Palace City 13U baseball returns to action on Tuesday hosting Brookings for a noon doubleheader at Drake Field.
YOUTH SOFTBALL
— Forty-six teams competed over the weekend at the Lowell Rang Memorial youth fastpitch softball tournament in Mitchell. Teams played pool games before advancing to gold or silver single-elimination brackets across five age divisions. In 10-and-under play, South Dakota Players Red captured the gold championship with a 4-2 win over Sioux Falls Flash, while Brookings claimed the silver title. Yankton won the 12-and-under gold championship, defeating Brandon 8-2. In the 14-and-under division, Harrisburg won the gold championship, beating Yankton 12-3. In 18-and-under competition, the Mount Vernon Venom claimed the tournament title with a 12-7 victory over Yankton.
YOUTH SOCCER
— Seventeen teams competed over the weekend in the Palace City Cup youth soccer tournament at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex. The event featured pool play across multiple age divisions with no full bracket elimination format. In the U9 boys division, Mitchell Soccer Association’s Black team went 2-1. In U10 boys play, the Mitchell Timbers went 1-2. In U11/U12 boys action, Mitchell went 2-0. In the U11/U12 girls division, Mitchell’s Fire and Ice split their two matchups going 1-1.
AMATEUR BASEBALL – SUNDAY
Mt. Vernon 13, Corsica 5 – Bradley Dean went 4-for-4 with three RBI’s and two runs scored.
Alexandria 15, Parkston Rays 4 (7 innings) – Jackson Jarding went 4-for-5 with three HR’s, four RBI’s and four runs. Ben and A.J. Wilber each added three hits and a pair of RBI’s.
Platte 11, Winner/Colome 1 (7 innings) – Hunter Hewitt went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Michael Buitenbos picked up the win going six innings, allowing one run on six hits.
Kimball/White Lake 15, Colome 5 (7 innings) – The Nationals scored 14 runs over the first two innings. Cooper Leiferman had a HR with three hits and six RBI’s.
Four Corners 17, Plankinton 7 (7 innings) – Four Corners scored 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Ryan Kreidler’s RBI double off the center-field wall in the eighth inning scored Luke Keaschall and completed the Minnesota Twins’ comeback in a 5-4 win against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kreidler had a pinch-hit single and scored the tying run in the seventh for Minnesota, which took two of three games in the series. Victor Caratini hit a two-run homer for the Twins in the fourth. Byron Buxton had three hits and drove in a run during the seventh-inning rally. Minnesota starts a three-game series at Texas on Monday at 7:05 pm.

— The Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup champions for the first time in 20 years after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 Sunday night to win the series four games to two. Carolina’s defense dominated the clinching game, holding Vegas to 22 shots while goaltender Brandon Bussi recorded his first career playoff shutout. Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The 37-year-old became the oldest player to win the award after leading Carolina with six goals in the Stanley Cup Final. The championship is the second in franchise history and the first since 2006.
NBA
— Jalen Brunson scored 45 points, including 13 straight for New York in the fourth quarter, as the Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night. The Knicks won the series 4-1 to win their first NBA title in 53 years. New York rallied from double-digit deficits in all four victories, including 16 on Saturday night. Brunson set a Knicks record for points in a finals game; it had been 38 by Willis Reed in 1970.
NASCAR
— Denny Hamlin captured his third straight NASCAR Cup Series victory Sunday, winning at Pocono Raceway for the fourth time this season and the 64th win of his career. The 45-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing driver moved into sole possession of ninth place on the all-time wins list, passing Kyle Busch, and extended his Pocono dominance with his eighth career win at the track. NASCAR now heads to San Diego for its first-ever street race at Naval Base Coronado next weekend.

Goodman and Castro each hit two of Colorado’s six homers. The Athletics ended their Las Vegas homestand with a 4-2 record ahead of their full time move in 2028.
— Ben Rice hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth inning, while José Caballero added a three-run blast as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3 for their sixth win in seven games.
— Colson Montgomery, Sam Antonacci and Chase Meidroth homered in Chicago’s six-run sixth inning as the White Sox held on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4.
— Jackson Chourio and Blake Perkins homered, while Kyle Harrison pitched three-hit ball for six innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0.
— Stephen Kolek scattered five hits while pitching into the eighth inning, while Maikel Garcia had three hits and three RBIs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 4-0.
— A.J. Ewing finished a triple shy of the cycle as the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 8-1.
— Max Meyer allowed one run in six innings in the Miami Marlins’ 4-2 victory over Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Skenes set a career high with 23 swings and misses and struck out 10, including the side in the fourth and sixth. He gave up four hits with one walk in six innings.
— Wyatt Langford hit Connelly Early’s first pitch over the Green Monster completely out of Fenway Park, and Kyle Higashioka launched a three-run homer to help the Texas Rangers avert a three-game sweep with a 6-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.
— Junior Caminero hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a series sweep with an 8-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Logan Webb and Caleb Kilian combined on a seven-hitter as the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1. Matt Chapman homered and drove in two runs.
— Gabriel Moreno’s go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Cincinnati Reds 5-3.
— Miles Mikolas pitched seven shutout innings in relief of an opener as the Washington Nationals scored five runs in the fourth inning to pull away from the Seattle Mariners 10-1.
— Rodolfo Durán homered and drove in three runs, while Fernando Tatis Jr. had two RBIs and the San Diego Padres beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2.
