MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernel football will be at No. 2 Tea Area on Friday night at 6 pm. The Kernels are coming off a 23-22 double overtime win at No. 3 Watertown last Friday. Coverage starts at 5 pm with the KORNer Booth pregame show on KORN.
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball picked up a pair of home wins on Saturday, defeating Spearfish 3-1 and Douglas 3-0. Against Spearfish, Mitchell Freshman Nia Talley had a match-high 18 kills, while fellow Freshman C.C. Morgan added 13 kills. In the sweep vs. Douglas, Morgan had a match-high 10 kills, while Talley added six aces. The Kernels improved to 7-8 on the season and will be at Rapid City Central on Friday.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer will face No. 3 seed Rapid City Stevens on Tuesday at 7 pm CST in the Class AA SoDAK 16. The Kernels, 4-8-1 on the season, will be the No. 14 seed.
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf will compete at the Class AA state championship Monday and Tuesday at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis competes at the Class AA state tournament this week starting on Thursday in Rapid City.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN.
— Dakota Wesleyan football fell to Morningside 56-20 on Saturday in Sioux City. Morningside jumped to a 35-0 lead before DWU got on the scoreboard late in the first half. The Tigers scored twice in the third quarter, with quarterback Jed Jenson connecting with Caleb Kilbride for touchdowns of 31 and 19 yards. Jenson completed 17 of 39 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, while Kilbride caught six passes for 90 yards and two scores. Morningside totaled 621 yards, including 358 rushing. DWU falls to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the GPAC. The Tigers host Concordia next Saturday at 1:30 pm for homecoming.
— No. 12 Dakota Wesleyan volleyball bounced back with a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference road wins. The Tigers opened the weekend by rallying past College of Saint Mary 3-2 in Omaha. Keatyn Liebsack and Karly VanDerWerff each had 17 kills, while Kayleigh Hybertson recorded 60 assists. DWU then swept Mount Marty 3-0 Saturday in Yankton, winning 25-9, 25-19 and 25-15. Evy Knoblock led the Tigers with 12 kills, while Hybertson had 29 assists and 10 digs. Lizzie Tyler added 22 digs. Dakota Wesleyan improves to 15-5 overall and 4-4 in the GPAC and hosts Doane Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer picked up a 2-0 win vs. Hastings on Saturday to improve to 4-3-1 on the season. The Tigers will be at Concordia on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer lost 5-1 vs. Hastings on Saturday to fall to 2-2-4 on the season. The Tigers will be at Dakota State on Monday at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State pulled away from Illinois State for a 31-14 Missouri Valley Football Conference victory on Saturday. Quarterback Jack Holst completed 18 of 23 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Josiah Johnson rushed for 131 yards, while James Basinger added 90 yards and a 66-yard touchdown run. SDSU also got a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown from Marcus Green. The Jackrabbits improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. SDSU is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at North Dakota.
— South Dakota State volleyball rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat St. Thomas 3-2 on Saturday in St. Paul. The Jackrabbits won the final two sets 28-26 and 15-13 after dropping the first and third sets. Sylvie Zgonc led SDSU with 18 kills and 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season, while Rylee Martin finished with 31 assists. The Jackrabbits improved to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in Summit League play. SDSU hosts Kansas City on Thursday 7 pm.
— South Dakota State and North Dakota State women’s soccer played to a scoreless draw Saturday night in Fargo. The Jackrabbits and Bison each finished with 13 shots, but SDSU held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. SDSU is now 6-2-3 overall and 1-0-2 in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits host Oral Roberts Thursday at 6 p.m. in Brookings.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football picked up a homecoming win on Saturday, defeating Indiana State 44-14. The Coyotes forced five turnovers, including four in the first half, and turned each of those takeaways into touchdowns. USD led 30-0 at halftime. Quarterback Austyn Modrzewski threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Charles Pierre Jr. rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns and added a receiving score. RJ Stewart had two interceptions, while Kael Kolarik added another. The Coyotes improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. USD hosts Southern Illinois next Saturday at 1 pm.
— USD volleyball rolled past Omaha in straight sets on Saturday, winning 25-22, 25-18, 25-13 for its second consecutive road sweep. The Coyotes used a balanced attack, with five players recording at least six kills. Lauren Medeck led USD with 10 kills and added 16 digs for her second straight double-double, while Avery Van Hook finished with 33 assists. The Coyotes improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in Summit League play. USD host Oral Roberts on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD women’s soccer defeated North Dakota 2-0 on Sunday in Grand Forks. Klarissa Vega scored both goals for the Coyotes, finding the net in the 22nd and 58th minutes. The Coyotes improved to 4-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Summit League play. USD hosts Kansas City Thursday at 6 p.m.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
— No. 3 Brandon Valley upset top-ranked Harrisburg in five sets on Saturday, handing the Tigers their first loss to a South Dakota team since 2022. The Lynx won the opening set 26-24, but Harrisburg answered by taking the next two. Brandon Valley rallied to win the fourth set 32-30 after facing match point, then closed out the upset 15-12 in the fifth. Harrisburg’s previous South Dakota loss was a three-set defeat to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Sept. 22, 2022.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
— The Class A boys state golf tournament begins Monday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell, with 91 golfers from 26 schools competing for team and individual championships. The 36-hole tournament starts at 9 a.m. Monday and continues Tuesday. Dakota Valley, the defending team champion, is among the favorites after winning the last two titles. Aberdeen Roncalli’s Harper Schnabel enters as the top regional scorer after shooting a 4-under 68 at Lakeview.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— The Minnesota Vikings stayed unbeaten with a 15-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Will Reichard kicked five field goals, while T.J. Hockenson tied a career best with 13 receptions for 119 yards. Kyler Murray threw for 247 yards without a turnover, and Aaron Jones rushed for 94 yards. Minnesota’s defense held Miami to just 10 points, with quarterback Malik Willis throwing for only 85 yards and losing a fumble. The Vikings improved to 4-0, while the Dolphins fell to 0-4.
MLB PLAYOFFS – SUNDAY
— Jackson Chourio delivered a two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead in the National League Division Series. Chourio lined a 101 mph pitch from Padres closer Mason Miller into center field, scoring Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick. Miller had entered with San Diego leading 3-2 and threw 40 pitches. The Padres have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 2. The best-of-five series resumes Tuesday in San Diego, with Milwaukee one win from reaching the NL Championship Series.
— The Atlanta Braves evened their National League Division Series at one game apiece with a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Michael Harris II had three hits, including a triple and a double, and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Harris added an insurance RBI double in the seventh. The Dodgers pulled within one on Max Muncy’s ninth-inning homer, but Atlanta held on to win.

— Missouri made the biggest move in this week’s AP Top 25 college football poll, jumping 11 spots to No. 14 after defeating Florida 45-17. The Gators fell eight spots to No. 16. Texas remains No. 1 for the fourth straight week, receiving 61 of 70 first-place votes. Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami and Ohio State round out the top five. BYU moved to No. 8, while LSU climbed to No. 10. Pittsburgh entered the rankings at No. 25.

— Patrick Mahomes threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Kenneth Walker III rushed for 177 yards and two scores as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27. Walker’s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:21 remaining gave Kansas City the lead for good. Kansas City improved to 4-0.
— Brock Purdy threw two touchdown passes and Christian McCaffrey added a rushing score as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Denver Broncos 24-14. San Francisco improved to 4-0, while Denver fell to 2-2.
— New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye overcame two first-half turnovers, throwing three touchdown passes in a 29-26 comeback win over the Buffalo Bills. Maye finished 22 of 37 for 269 yards, including the go-ahead 12-yard touchdown pass to Efton Chism with 1:50 remaining.
— Kyle Monangai rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns as the Chicago Bears beat the New York Jets 23-12. Chicago dominated time of possession, running 89 plays to New York’s 32 and holding the Jets to just 157 yards and seven first downs.
— Kyren Williams scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes as the Los Angeles Rams rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20.
— Jordan Love threw two touchdown passes as the Green Bay Packers held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-14. The Buccaneers fell to 0-4 for the first time since 2013.
— CeeDee Lamb caught a career-high 17 passes for 189 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Houston Texans 34-30. Lamb’s 12-yard touchdown catch with 40 seconds left capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive led by Dak Prescott, who threw for 335 yards. Houston remains winless at 0-4.
— Trevor Lawrence passed for 227 yards and a touchdown as the Jacksonville Jaguars held off the Cincinnati Bengals 22-17. Lawrence won for the first time in four career meetings with Cincinnati. The Bengals Joe Burrow threw for 428 yards but was intercepted twice.
— The Carolina Panthers beat the Detroit Lions 32-26 as Bryce Young threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns, both to rookie Tetairoa McMillan. McMillan had a career-high 14 catches for 192 yards, while Chuba Hubbard rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Jared Goff threw for 412 yards and a touchdown for Detroit.
— Emanuel Wilson scored on a touchdown run and reception as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Chargers 30-23. Wilson rushed for 81 yards on 21 carries and caught three passes for 39 yards. The Chargers fell to 0-4.
— The Baltimore Ravens beat the Tennessee Titans 24-18, as QB Lamar Jackson left with an ankle injury. Jackson threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns before leaving at halftime. Tennessee fell to 0-4.
— Jameis Winston threw three touchdown passes and Deonte Banks returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown as the New York Giants beat the Arizona Cardinals 36-24.
— The Indianapolis Colts beat the Washington Commanders 30-13 in London. Jonathan Taylor rushed for two touchdowns and 95 yards on 20 carries, while quarterback Daniel Jones added a rushing touchdown.
