MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels football lost to Tea Area on Friday night in overtime 26-20. Mitchell, 1-4 on the season, will be at Aberdeen Central this Friday night at 7 pm. The KORNer Booth pregame starts at 6 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys golf will compete at the ESD conference meet on Monday in Brandon.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis will compete at the ESD conference meet on Monday and Tuesday in Yankton.

— Mitchell volleyball is on the road for their next four matches, starting on Tuesday at SF Lincoln at 6:30 pm on KORN. The Kernels are 6-3 and seventh in AA seed points as they near the mid-point of the season.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer will be at Aberdeen Central on Tuesday at 4 pm. The Kernels are 2-7-3 on the season and are 17th in AA seed points with two matches remaining in the regular season.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer will be at Aberdeen Central on Tuesday at 6 pm. The Kernels are 4-8 on the season and 15th in AA seed points with two matches remaining in the regular season.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football dropped to 1-4 on the season with a 21-7 loss on Saturday at Briar Cliff. DWU’s lone touchdown came last in the third quarter when Jed Jenson found Caleb Kilbride for a 31-yard touchdown. Jenson finished 23-of-37 for 284 yards, while Cole Holden had nine catches for 147 yards. The Tigers are at Doane on Saturday at 1 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball lost on Saturday 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-14) at Midland. Evy Knoblock led the Tigers with 10 kills. DWU (9-7 overall, 3-3 GPAC) hosts the College of St. Mary on Friday at 7:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer played to a 0-0 tie at Hastings on Saturday. The Tigers are 1-2-5 on the season with five of their eight matches this season ending in a tie. DWU will be at Northwestern on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer played to a 2-2 tie on Saturday at Hastings to move to 4-5-1 on the season. DWU will be at Northwestern on Wednesday at 5 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State football ended its non-conference schedule with a 51-7 home win vs. Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. QB Chase Mason went 21-for-29 for a career-high 321 passing yards, while tying a career best with three touchdowns. Grahm Goering added seven catches, for 101 yards. SDSU’s defense limited Mercyhurst to just 154 yards of total offense, while the Jackrabbits had 469 total yards. SDSU starts Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday with a road game at Youngstown State at 5 pm.

— South Dakota State volleyball will be at Denver on Thursday.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer host North Dakota on Thursday at 7 pm. SDSU’s unbeaten streak is at nine straight matches.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football started conference play with a 51-13 loss at No. 1 North Dakota State on Saturday. The Coyotes allowed 547 yards and trailed at one point 51-3. USD hosts Murray State on Saturday for homecoming at 2 pm.

— USD volleyball swept Oral Roberts on Saturday 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-8) to pick up their first Summit League win of the season. Lauren Medeck was the only hitter with double digits kills as she finished with 13. USD setter Avery Van Hook had 31 assists. The Coyotes, (9-5 overall, 1-1 Summit League) will be at Denver on Saturday at 2 pm.

— USD women’s soccer shutout St. Thomas on Sunday 2-0. The Coyotes improved to 5-2-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Summit League. USD hosts North Dakota State on Thursday at 6 pm.

MLB
— Trea Turner won his second career NL batting title, Kyle Schwarber led the league with 56 homes and 132 RBIs and Nick Castellanos capped Philadelphia’s 96-win season with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as the Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1. Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson had a no-decision, throwing six shutout innings, allowing just one hit with nine strikeouts.

— Brayan Rocchio hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning as the Cleveland Guardians rallied for a 9-8 victory over the Texas Rangers, putting an exclamation point on their improbable AL Central title. When the Detroit Tigers lost 4-3 at Boston earlier in the day, the Guardians completed the largest comeback to win a division or league championship in major league history. Texas took an 8-5 lead on pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez’s three-run homer in the top of the 10th. Cleveland was 40-48 and 15 ½ games behind Detroit on July 6 before setting a new major league record for largest defecit overcome to win a division.

— Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk hit two home runs, including his first career grand slam, as the Blue Jays clinched their first AL East title in a decade by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 13-4. George Springer and Addison Barger also went deep for the Blue Jays, who needed a win or a Yankees loss on the final day to take the division crown for the first time since 2015. The Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 to finish the season on an eight-game winning streak. Toronto also wrapped up the best record in the American League and will have home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs.

— Ramón Urías hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, one of four Houston home runs, as the Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2. Yainer Diaz, Brice Matthews and Victor Caratini also went deep for the Astros, who failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

— Miami’s Edward Cabrera tossed five innings of two-hit ball as the Marlins used a four-run fourth inning to beat the Mets 4-0 in their regular-season finale, preventing New York from making the playoffs. The Mets needed a win and a Cincinnati loss at Milwaukee to reach the postseason. The Reds lost 4-2 to the Brewers but took the final National League wild card on a head-to-head tiebreaker after winning the season series against New York. The Reds and Mets both finished the season at 83-79.

— Clayton Kershaw tossed 5⅓ scoreless innings in the final regular-season start of his 18-year major league career as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1. Shohei Ohtani hits his career-high 55th homer of the season to break his own Dodgers record.

— Manny Machado hit an RBI single during the five-run first inning and homered leading off the third for the San Diego Padres, who routing the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-4 for a three-game sweep.

— Kansas City’s Mike Yastrzemski hit two solo home runs and Cole Ragans struck out eight in 4 1/3 innings as the Royals defeated the Athletics 9-2.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ohio State stays at No. 1, while Oregon moves up to No. 2 in this week’s AP Top 25 College Football poll. Oregon picked up a 30-24 overtime win on Saturday vs. previous No. 3 Penn State. The Nittany Lions fell four spots to No. 7. Ole Miss made the biggest move this week, going from No. 13 to No. 4 after defeating LSU 24-19. Oklahoma comes in at No. 5, followed by Texas A&M at No. 6. Indiana moves up three spots to No. 8 after a win at Iowa, Texas is at No. 9 and Alabama moved up seven spots to No 10 after a 24-21 win at Georgia. Florida State dropped eight spots to No. 18 after losing on Friday at Virginia 46-38 in double overtime.

— In a surprising move, Arkansas has fired head football coach Sam Pittman midway through his sixth season, citing the need for a change to compete at the highest level in the Southeastern Conference. Offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, a former Arkansas head coach, has been named interim head coach. Arkansas is currently 2-3 following a 56-13 loss on Saturday to Notre Dame. The school has already begun a national search for its next head coach, with Petrino among the potential candidates.
