MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels football lost on Saturday to Brookings in the 10th annual Kernel Bowl 40-0 to fall to 1-1 on the season. After a 13-0 halftime lead, Brookings scored 21 points in the third quarter, including a 78-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half. Mitchell was stopped twice deep in Brookings territory in the first half, turning the ball over on fourth down. The Kernels will be at Spearfish on Friday at 7 pm. — Mitchell Kernels volleyball dominated Pierre on Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-14, 25-16). Senior Audrey Miller had a match-high 16 kills and was named the Kernel Bowl player of the match. Mitchell, 4-2 on the season, will be at No. 1 Harrisburg on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis won all four home matches over the weekend, sweeping Spearfish and Pierre on Friday 9-0, while defeating Aberdeen Central 6-3 and Brandon Valley 8-1 on Saturday. Mitchell will be at SF Washington on Thursday for a dual at 4 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer shutout Huron on Saturday on its way to a 6-0 win to improve to 4-4 on the season. Mitchell will be at Watertown on Tuesday at 5 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer picked up a 4-3 over Huron on Saturday for its second straight win. Mitchell will be at Watertown on Tuesday at 7 pm.
— Mitchell Christian’s Silas Holdeman finished 18th out of 513 participants at the Augustan Twilight at Yankton Trail Park on Friday night. Holdeman finished with a personal-best time of 15 minutes, 34 seconds. Mitchell’s Hutter Patton was the top finisher for the Kernels at 16 minutes, 2 seconds, a season best and good for 50th all-time. On the girls side, Mitchell’s Londyn Schroeder finished 48th overall with a time of 19 minutes, 2 seconds.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football lost 66-7 on Saturday to No. 19 Dordt. The Tigers, 1-1 on the season, will be at Concordia on Saturday at 6 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball won its third match in a row with a 3-1 victory over Waldorf on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Evy Knoblock had a match-high 19 kills. The Tigers, 7-4 on the season, will be at Northwestern on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer lost 2-0 at York (Neb.) on Saturday to fall to 1-4 on the season. The Tigers will host the South Dakota School of Mines on Friday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer played to a 1-1 at York (Neb.) on Saturday to move to 0-1-2 on the season. The Tigers will be at Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday at 8 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— No. 2 South Dakota State defeated No. 3 Montana State 30-24 in double overtime on Saturday night when Chase Mason found TE Brayden Delahoyde for a 25-yard touchdown. Tied at 17 after regulation, Mason hooked up with wide receiver Lofton O’Groske for a 2-yard touchdown for the first score in overtime. SDSU hosts Drake on Saturday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame show starts at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.
— South Dakota State volleyball went 2-0 over the weekend hosting the SDSU Invitational with a 3-0 win Ole Miss on Friday and a 3-1 win over Wyoming on Sunday. The Jackrabbits had 2,256 fans in attendance on Friday, the second largest home crowd in volleyball program history, to see SDSU’s first win over an SEC team. SDSU, 3-1 on the season, travels to Minneapolis for the Diet Coke Class hosted by the University of Minnesota. The Jacks face No. 24 Dayton on Friday, South Florida on Saturday and No. 11 Minnesota on Sunday.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer played to a 1-1 tie on Sunday vs. Oregon State to move to 3-1-3 on the season. The Jacks will be at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football was upset on Saturday at a 17-point favorite on the road, losing to Lamar 20-13. The Coyotes, 0-2 on the season, host Northern Colorado in its home opener on Saturday at 1 pm.
— USD volleyball went 2-1 over the weekend at the UConn Challenge with wins over Colgate on Friday and Ball State on Saturday. USD will host the Coyote Invitational this week facing Green Bay on Thursday, Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and Kansas on Saturday.
— USD women’s soccer shutout Central Michigan on Sunday 1-0 to improve to 4-1-2 on the season. The Coyotes host Northern Colorado on Thursday at 6 pm.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ohio State, Penn State and LSU remained the top three teams in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll on Sunday, Oregon is back in the top five and South Florida is ranked for the first time in seven years. Ohio State received 57 of the 65 first-place votes. Georgia slipped to No. 6 behind Miami after a win over Austin Peay. Texas, Notre Dame, Illinois and Florida State round out the top 10. South Florida moved to No. 18 after defeated No. 13 Florida 18-16. The Gators fell out of the top 25.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Byron Buxton and Kody Clemens homered as the Minnesota Twins beat Kansas City 5-1 to end a six-game losing streak. Kansas City fell two games behind Seattle for the final AL wild card spot. The Twins start a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels tonight at 8:38 pm.
TENNIS
— Carlos Alcaraz defeated rival Jannik Sinner in the Men’s U.S. Open final on Sunday, winning in four sets: 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The victory marked Alcaraz’s sixth Grand Slam title and helped him reclaim the world No. 1 ranking, ending Sinner’s 65-week run at the top. This was the third consecutive major final between Alcaraz and Sinner in 2025, a historic feat not seen in men’s tennis before, with Alcaraz now leading their head-to-head 10–5. The 22-year-old Alcaraz became the second-youngest man to win six major titles.
— World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6 on Saturday to win her second consecutive U.S. Open title, and her fourth Grand Slam overall. The 27-year-old Sabalenka rebounded from two previous major final losses in 2025 (at the Australian Open and French Open) and a Wimbledon semifinal defeat to Anisimova.
NASCAR
— Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at World Wide Technology Raceway in southern Illinois on Sunday, securing his fifth victory of the season and a spot in the second round of the playoffs. Starting from the pole, Hamlin led 75 of 240 laps and held off Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott for the win, the 59th of his career and Toyota’s 200th Cup Series victory.
MLB
— Manny Machado hit his 23rd home run and drove in three to help the San Diego Padres roll to an 8-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. With the win, the Padres remained one game behind the Dodgers for first place in the National League West.
— Jake Burger hit a two-run homer off Framber Valdez in the sixth inning as the Texas Rangers beat the Houston Astros 4-2 to keep pace in the American League wild-card race. The Rangers remained 1 1/2 games behind Seattle for the final AL wild-card spot and four games behind he Astros in the AL West with 18 games remaining.
— Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 53rd home run as the Seattle Mariners had 20 hits as they scored their most runs since 2012 in an 18-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. Eugenio Suárez homered twice, raising his season total to 45. Raleigh hit a three-run HR in a seven-run ninth, giving him 113 RBIs.
— Aaron Judge saved a run with a diving catch and scored the go-ahead run on Cody Bellinger’s double as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 and closed within two games of the AL East leader.
— Andrew Vaughn had four hits and Jacob Misiorowski cruised through seven innings, allowing only one run and three hits, as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-2.
— Sonny Gray took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat San Francisco 4-3 to leave the Giants four games back for the last NL wild card.
— Washington pinch-hitter Josh Bell hit a three-run homer as the Nationals rallied with five runs in the ninth inning to stun the Chicago Cubs 6-3.
— Hunter Greene tied a season high with 12 strikeouts as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Mets 3-2 to take two of three from New York and move back above .500.
— Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs and Mookie Betts added a solo shot as the Dodgers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 to end a five-game losing steak.
— José Ramírez passed Jim Thome to move into sole possession of second place on the Cleveland’s career RBIs list, helping the Guardians to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1. Ramírez hit a tying triple in the sixth for his 938th career RBI.
— Boston pinch-hitter Nick Sogard lined a late tiebreaking, two-run double, while closer Aroldis Chapman extended his hitless streak to 17 straight appearances by striking out four batters in the ninth inning and Alex Cora got his 600th win as Boston manager when the Red Sox beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4.
— Lenyn Sosa homered and drove in three runs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4.
— Otto López homered twice as the Miami Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4, avoiding a three-game sweep.
— Jo Adell hit his 35th homer, while Travis d’Arnaud hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Angels avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Athletics.
