PALACE CITY BASEBALL
Palace City 14-and-under baseball fell 12-0 to Harrisburg on Friday in its first game of the Class A State Tournament in Pierre. Meade Schlimgen had two of Palace City’s three hits. Palace City plays RC Post 320 Saturday at noon followed by a matchup with Watertown at 2:30 p.m.
Palace City 13-and-under baseball lost 16-4 to Watertown in its opening game of the Class A State Tournament in Brookings on Friday. Palace City plays Harrisburg Black at 10:30 this morning followed by a contest against Renner at 1 p.m. The top six teams advance to bracket play on Sunday.
CLASS B LEGION BASEBALL
The Class B Legion state tournament pairings are set for July 31-Aug. 4. The eight-team double elimination tournament takes place at Flynn Field in Madison. Parkston will play Belle Fourche in the tournament’s second game 30 minutes after game one, Dell Rapids versus Volga at 10 a.m. Groton plays Garretson at 5 p.m. Tournament host Madison will take on Dakota Valley in the first round on July 31, 30 minutes after Game 3.

The Class A Legion state tournament pairings are set for July 28-Aug. 1. The eight-team double elimination tournament takes place at Floyd Fitzgerald Stadium in Rapid City. Tournament host Rapid City Post 22 is the No. 1 seed and will take on No. 8 Watertown in the first round on July 28 at 8 p.m. No. 2 Sioux Falls West vs. No. 7 Harrisburg, 11 a.m.; No. 4 Brandon Valley vs. No. 5 Brookings, 2 p.m.; No. 3 Yankton vs. No. 6 Rapid City Post 320, 5 p.m.
AMATEUR BASEBALL SCHEDULE
AJ Wilber threw a four-hit complete game with seven strikeouts, leading the Alexandria Angels over the Corsica Horned Frogs 8 to 1 in the District 5B Tournament in Platte on Friday night. Tyson Gau had two hits and drove in two runs for Alexandria. Dakota Munger had two hits and one RBI with Jerrod Zens adding one hit, two RBIs and two walks at the plate for the Angels. Logan Bakker hit a solo home run for Corsica. Alexandria moves on to face Platte in the semifinals, while Corsica enters the elimination bracket against Winner/Colome.
Preston Nedved went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored as the Platte Killer Tomatoes built an 11-1 lead before holding off a late Winner-Colome rally for an 11 to 7 win. Hayden Kuiper had two hits and two RBIs and Michael Buitenbos and Richard Sternberg added two hits apiece for the Killer Tomatoes. Winner/Colome’s Derek Graesser had two hits and an RBI while Dillon Lambley tallied two hits in the loss for the Pheasants. Platte advances to meet Alexandria in the District 5B semifinals Sunday at 5 p.m. Winner/Colome meets Corsica in an elimination game Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Aiden Scheetz delivered 12 strikeouts over 6 2/3 one-hit innings, and Dexter Payne secured the save as the Salem Cubs held off a ninth-inning rally by Flandreau Blue Teal to earn a 5-4 win in the District 4B Tournament on Friday night. Jacob Vonberge led the way for Salem with two hits, while Craig Cheeseman, Payne, Jon Forster and Owen Alley all had one hit and one RBI apiece. Salem faces Dell Rapids PBR in the District 4B semifinals at 5 p.m. today in Humboldt. Flandreau Blue Teal plays the loser between Hartford/Humboldt and Madison at 3 p.m. on Sunday in an elimination game. The Flandreau Cardinals defeated Baltic 12 to 2 in the other District 4B game Friday night.
In District 6B on Friday night, Zach Clark went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs to power Crofton past Menno 7-2. Zach Hegge went the distance for the Bluejays, striking out 10. Dylan Lehr led Menno with a two-run home run, while Bryce Sattler added two hits. Wynot, Nebraska beat Irene 13-1 in another 6B game Friday night. Crofton faces Wynot in the District 6B semifinals at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Menno. The Menno Mad Frogs play Irene at 6 p.m. on Sunday in an elimination game.

LeBron James announced Friday that he will sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, calling it his “last decision” after seriously considering retirement following his 23rd NBA season. The 41-year-old James said he still has the desire to compete for another title and is expected to sign a two-year, $8 million veteran minimum contract. James leaves the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons and joins a 76ers team led by Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown as Philadelphia looks to end its NBA championship drought, which dates back to 1983.

CBS NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office’s arrest report, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests after getting stopped while driving south on Interstate 43 on Thursday. Romo was taken into custody, booked and released. He has a court appearance set for Sept. 21. Romo went to high school about 35 miles from Milwaukee in Burlington, Wisconsin. The 46-year-old Romo has been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017. CBS had no comment regarding the arrest.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been cleared to participate in the start of training camp after he underwent surgery late last year to repair torn ligaments in his left knee. Mahomes said Friday he visited earlier this week with Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas-based orthopedic surgeon who performed the operation, and that he met all the benchmarks necessary to report on time. The Chiefs begin practice Saturday for rookies, quarterbacks and players coming off injuries. Full-squad work begins next week.

Michael Kim shot the 15th 59 in PGA Tour history Friday, making a 24-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole at the 3M Open in Minnesota. Kim birdied the final four holes of his bogey-free round to get to 14 under for the tournament and open a three-shot lead over three players after two rounds. Ben Kohles, who had a two-shot lead entering the day, shot a 69 to drop into a tie for second with Chandler Phillips (65) and Emiliano Grillo (67). Two bad swings cost Scottie Scheffler, and the world’s top-ranked player was seven shots back after 70.

Jacob Lopez allowed one hit in five innings, while Lawrence Butler and Tyler Soderstrom drove in runs as the Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 2-0 on Friday night. The A’s were held hitless through four innings until Tommy White doubled with one out in the fifth. Twins starter Zebby Matthews allowed both runs on three hits in six innings. Austin Martin doubled and Ryan Jeffers singled for the Twins’ only hits of the game. Game two of the three game series is Saturday at 6:10 pm.
Christian Walker hit a three-run double, Cam Smith added a two-run homer in Houston’s eight-run sixth inning and the Astros overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on Friday night.
Anthony Seigler led off with a homer and had his first four-hit game in the majors, while Romy Gonzalez broke an eighth-inning tie with an RBI double as the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4. Boston rebounded from a loss Wednesday night in the second game of a doubleheader against Baltimore that ended a 15-game winning streak. The Red Sox are 24-6 in their last 30 games.
Tarik Skubal had a season-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run in 7 1/3 innings, helping the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
Cam Schlitter pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning with 12 strikeouts, helping the New York Yankees to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Roki Sasaki pitched seven innings, while Kyle Tucker hit a two-run homer as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 4-2. Sasaki allowed just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. The last-place Mets (43-61) fell a season-worst 18 games under .500.
Dansby Swanson hit an RBI single and Seiya Suzuki drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning as the Chicago Cubs held on for a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Matt Olson hit his 27th home run as part of a four-run 10th inning as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-6.
Ryan Vilade and Richie Palacios hit home runs, while Nick Fortes had four hits as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 11-3. Shane McClanahan allowed one run on two hits in five innings. He improved to 7-1 in nine home starts this season.
Pinch-hitter Luis Rengifo hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning as the San Diego Padres beat Miami 4-2, extending the Marlins’ losing streak to 10.
Jake Burger hit a two-run home run and a go-ahead single to lead the Texas Rangers past the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Friday night in the opener of a four-game series between the top two teams in the AL West. With the win, the Rangers increased their divisional lead to 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mariners.
Rafael Devers homered in his first at-bat and hit a walk-off, two-run single in the 10th inning to give the San Francisco Giants a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Casey Schmitt also homered and Luis Arraez had two hits to help the Giants end a five-game losing streak.
All-Star Eduardo Rodríguez bounced back from his worst start of the season, Gabriel Moreno drove in the go-ahead run with a sac fly and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Friday night.
Tomoyuki Sugano picked up his 10th win and Kyle Karros and TJ Rumfield each had two hits as the Colorado Rockies capitalized on a fast start to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Friday.
Eugenio Suárez hit a two-run homer, Rhett Lowder pitched two-run ball for five innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Friday night.
