SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

South Dakota State dropped its NCAA Regional opener 4–1 to Nebraska on Friday. Both teams stranded early baserunners, but the Huskers finally broke through in the fourth with three straight hits that chased SDSU starter Sam Schlecht. Reliever Ty Madison steadied things, keeping it a two‑run game into the late innings. SDSU’s best opportunity came in the seventh, when they put runners on the corners with no outs. A safety squeeze failed, a bang‑bang play at the plate erased another run, and the Jackrabbits settled for just one on Owen Siegert’s RBI single before leaving the bases loaded. Nebraska closer J’Shawn Unger then shut the door, retiring the final eight batters. Nebraska added solo homers from Dylan Carey and Jett Buck in the eighth to seal it. The Jackrabbits move to Saturday’s elimination game against Arizona State. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
