MITCHELL KERNELS
— A trip to the Class AA state volleyball tournament is on the line Thursday night when the No. 8 seed Mitchell Kernels host the No. 9 seed Spearfish Spartans in the SoDAK 16. The winner advances to the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament, set for November 20–22 in Rapid City. Mitchell enters the postseason at 15-8, its best record since 2018 — the same year the Kernels last qualified for state. They’ll look to replicate their performance from October 4, when they swept Spearfish 3-0 on the road. Since 2007, Mitchell has dominated the series, winning 20 of 24 matchups against the Spartans. Match time is to be determined.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball lost its second straight game on Wednesday night, 88-84 to Valley City State at the Corn Palace despite a career-high 26 points from Steele Morgan. Anthony Riggans added 20 points for the Tigers as Valley City State shot 57% from the field and outrebounded the Tigers 36-20. DWU will be at Hastings on Saturday at 3:45 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) to No. 1 seed Northwestern on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the GPAC Tournament. Emily Dale and Evy Knoblock each had eight kills, setter Kayleigh Hybertson had 29 assists and Lizzie Tyler finished with 18 digs. The loss drops the Tigers to 18-11 overall as DWU awaits a potential National Tournament invite when the NAIA Selection Show airs this coming Monday at 4 pm.
— No. 16 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball will be at Hastings on Saturday at 2 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football ends the season on Saturday when they host Hastings at Joe Quintal Field at 1 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State men’s basketball kept it close at Oregon on Wednesday night, ultimately losing 83-69. The Jackrabbits were down six at halftime and cut the deficit down to one on multiple occasions late in the second half. Joe Sayler and Luke Haertle led SDSU with 14 points, while Kalen Garry added 13 points. The Jacks host Peru State on Monday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball will be at Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm. With two matches remaining in the regular season, SDSU has already clinched the Summit League regular season title outright for the second consecutive season. The Jacks enter the week at 20-3 on the season with a perfect 14-0 mark in the Summit League.
— South Dakota State football looks to end a three-game losing streak on Saturday when they host No. 13 Illinois State at 2 pm. The Jacks enter the matchup with a 7-3 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Illinois State, meanwhile, is on a three-game winning streak that has the Redbirds 7-3 overall and with a 4-2 record in conference play. The Jackrabbits have dropped three games in a row in the same season for the first time since the 2013.
— South Dakota State women’s basketball travels to Rapid City to face Montana on Saturday at 7 pm CST.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer will face Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 5 pm in Iowa City. The Jackrabbits captured The Summit League Championship on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Oral Roberts. SDSU makes its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Jacks lost in the NCAA First Round to Minnesota a season ago 2-0. Iowa earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after an 11-4-4 overall record, including a 6-2-3 mark in Big Ten Conference. Iowa was ranked 21st in the most recent Coaches Top 25 Rankings.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD men’s basketball defeated Southern Indiana on Wednesday night 89-74. Issac Bruns led the Coyotes with 18 points and seven rebounds. USD hosts Western Michigan on Sunday at 1 pm.
— USD women’s basketball will be at Kansas State on Thursday at 4 pm.
— USD volleyball will be at Oral Roberts on Saturday at Noon.
— USD football ends the regular season on Saturday at Southern Illinois at Noon.
MLB
— Paul Skenes has won the National League Cy Young Award in a unanimous vote, becoming the first pitcher in 40 years to win Rookie of the Year one season and a Cy Young Award the next. The 23-year-old right-hander led the majors with a 1.97 ERA and struck out 216 batters for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal won his second straight American League Cy Young Award. Skubal posted a 13-6 record with a 2.21 ERA. Skubal is the 12th pitcher in MLB history to capture a Cy Young in back-to-back seasons.
— Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to charges he took bribes to help gamblers win bets placed on pitches he threw. His teammate, Cleveland’s former closer Emmanuel Clase, has also been charged in the alleged scheme. Ortiz appeared Wednesday in Brooklyn federal court, Clase will be arraigned at the same courthouse Thursday. The two natives of the Dominican Republic have been on paid leave since July, when Major League Baseball began investigating what it said was unusually high in-game betting activity when they pitched. Following the indictments, the league announced new limits on betting on individual pitches.
NBA
— Los Angeles Clippers guard Bradley Beal is out for the season due to a hip fracture. Beal will undergo surgery next week and is expected to recover in six to nine months. He got injured last Saturday against Phoenix. Beal, a three-time All-Star, played only six games this season.
— Nikola Jokic had 55 points, tying the highest-scoring performance in the NBA this season, and 12 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Clippers 130-116 for their sixth straight victory. Jokic scored 25 of Denver’s 39 points in the first quarter. He missed adding to his league-leading six triple-doubles with six assists. Jokic was 5 of 6 on 3-pointers and made 14 of 16 free throws.
— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 30 points and nine assists in three quarters as the Oklahoma City Thunder rolled past the Los Angeles Lakers 121-92. Isaiah Joe added 21 points for the Thunder, who improved their league-best record to 12-1. Luka Doncic was held to 19 points on 7-for-20 shooting for L.A.
— Steph Curry scored 46 points as the Golden State Warriors beat the San Antonio Spurs 125-120, overcoming triple-doubles by Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle. Wembanyama had 31 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth career triple-double. Castle finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. They became the first Spurs teammates to record triple-doubles in the same game.
— Paul Reed had 28 points and 13 rebounds as the undermanned Detroit Pistons won their eighth straight game, beating the Chicago Bulls 124-113. The Pistons improved to 10-2 despite missing their entire usual starting lineup.
— Franz Wagner had 28 points and nine rebounds as the Orlando Magic handed the New York Knicks their first home loss of the season with a 124-107 victory.
— Payton Pritchard hit five 3-pointers, scored 24 points and had nine assists as the Boston Celtics defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 131-95.
— Jarrett Allen had 30 points and 10 rebounds, as the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers stopped Miami’s four-game win streak with a 130-116 victory over the Heat.
— Kevin Durant scored 23 points and Reed Sheppard added a season-high 21 off the bench to help the Houston Rockets coast to a 135-112 win over Washington, extending the Wizards’ skid to 10 games.
— Miles Bridges scored 20 points and rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner had 17 points on 8-for-8 shooting, as the Charlotte Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 111-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, who played without Giannis Antetokounmpo.
— Devin Booker had 26 points and nine assists as the Phoenix Suns held off the Dallas Mavericks 123-114 for their fourth straight victory.
— Jalen Johnson had 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Atlanta Hawks routed the Sacramento Kings 133-100.
NFL
— Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is dealing with a bruised hand suffered during the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Baltimore. He was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice, wearing padding to reduce swelling and avoiding right-handed throws during the media session. Both McCarthy and head coach Kevin O’Connell downplayed the severity, saying the injury shouldn’t significantly affect his preparation for this week’s game against the Chicago Bears. The injury occurred when his hand hit a teammate’s helmet on a throw to Justin Jefferson.
— The New York Giants are expected to start quarterback Jameis Winston against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Starter Jaxson Dart is in the concussion protocol as the Giants returned to practice Wednesday afternoon and seems unlikely to play. The 31-year-old Winston will be playing in his first game since Week 15 of last season for the Cleveland Browns. He signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants in the offseason.
— Tennessee Titans cornerback L’Jarius Sneed has been indicted in Texas on a misdemeanor charge for failing to report an aggravated assault. The incident allegedly occurred last year in suburban Dallas. The indictment relates to an alleged shooting on December 6, 2024, involving Sneed and another man. The Titans say they are aware of the legal matter and are in contact with NFL security. Sneed was placed on injured reserve last month with a quadricep injury.
— A Miami judge ordered that former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown will be released on $25,000 bail and must wear an ankle monitor. He has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree attempted murder charge in Florida. That carries a potential 15-year prison sentence and a fine up to $10,000 if he’s convicted. His lawyer said the 37-year-old Brown would return to his home Florida while the case proceeds. Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer after a celebrity boxing match on May 16 and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with earlier.
