MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell’s softball season opener ended in a 16-2, five-inning loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Monday night at Sherman Park. Mitchell took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI hits from Brooklyn Schlimgen and Delaney Linke, but Lincoln responded with a 10-run bottom half. The Kernels committed nine errors in the game, including six in the first two innings. Kinsley Herges had two of Mitchell’s three hits in the loss. Mitchell softball returns to Sioux Falls on Tuesday vs. Sioux Falls Washington at 5:30 pm.
— Mitchell baseball, 5-0 on the season, travels to face O’Gorman on Tuesday in Sioux Falls at 5:30 pm. The Kernels return home on Thursday to host Huron at 5 pm. The KORN pregame show starts at 4:45 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels track and field will compete Tuesday at the Yankton Triangular at 4 pm. The Corn Palace Relay have been rescheduled due to weather and will now take place on Thursday at Noon at Joe Quintal Field.
— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis will host Brookings and Aberdeen Roncalli in a triangular at Hitchcock Park on Tuesday at 11 am.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s and women’s golf teams turned in strong finishes at their home DWU Spring Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course on Monday. The men placed second overall, led by Dakota Munger, who finished runner-up individually with a three round total 214. The women took third as a team, led by Allison Meyerink’s individual title with a 227 and Sara Sudenga’s second-place finish at 234.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball hosts Mount Marty for a doubleheader on Friday at 3 pm at McWhirter Field. The Tigers are 30-11 overall, 13-1 in league play and have won a school record 12 straight games. DWU has a two game lead over Midland for first place in the GPAC with eight games remaining in the regular season.
— Dakota Wesleyan Baseball will host Concordia on Friday for a doubleheader at 2 pm at Drake Field.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State softball is scheduled to play at Omaha on Friday at 6 pm to begin a three-game series. The Jackrabbits are 23-24 on the season and 5-4 in the Summit League, one game behind St. Thomas for second place in the conference.
— South Dakota State baseball opens a 10-game homestand Tuesday at 3 p.m., hosting Midland in a nonconference matchup. The Jackrabbits enter at 11-21 overall after taking two of three at St. Thomas over the weekend, while Midland comes in 12-27. SDSU will host Oral Robert for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday at 3 pm.

— USD softball will be at Iowa State on Tuesday at 4 pm.
HIGH SCHOOL
— Former Augustana standout Dan Jansen has been named the new head coach of O’Gorman boys basketball. Jansen, a two-time NSIC Player of the Year and 2016 Division II National Player of the Year, replaces longtime coach Derek Robey. He scored a school-record 2,217 points at Augustana and helped lead the Vikings to a national championship. Jansen brings nearly a decade of coaching experience, including a head coaching stint in South Carolina and most recently serving as O’Gorman’s junior varsity coach.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Victor Caratini and Ryan Jeffers each homered and drove in three runs as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Boston Red Sox 13-6. Minnesota scored four runs in the first inning and broke the game open with seven more in the second, knocking Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet out after 1 2/3 innings. Jeffers finished with three hits, while Byron Buxton and Ryan Kreidler also homered for the Twins, who have won seven of their last eight games. Rookie Mick Abel takes the mound in game two of the three game series vs. former Twin Sonny Gray. First pitch is 6:40 pm.
WNBA
— UConn star Azzi Fudd was selected No. 1 overall in the WNBA Draft on Monday night by the Dallas Wings, earning a $500,000 rookie contract under the league’s updated collective bargaining agreement. In Dallas, she reunites with former Huskies guard Paige Bueckers, last year’s No. 1 overall pick. At No. 2, the Minnesota Lynx selected Olivia Miles, who transferred from Notre Dame to TCU and led the Horned Frogs to a deep NCAA Tournament run. UCLA standouts Lauren Betts went No. 4 to Washington and Gabriela Jaquez going No. 5 to Chicago.
NFL
— New England Patriots executive Eliot Wolf says head coach Mike Vrabel is “business as usual” and fully involved in the team’s preparation for the NFL Draft despite recent media scrutiny involving his personal life. Wolf said Vrabel has been actively working with scouts and coaches, reviewing prospects and contributing throughout the draft process, adding that his involvement has actually increased compared to last year. The comments follow reports involving Vrabel and NFL reporter Dianna Russini, which both parties have said were misrepresented. The Patriots are preparing with 11 total draft picks, including the 31st overall selection.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— ESPN college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale is facing another battle with cancer after announcing he has been diagnosed with melanoma in his lung and liver. Vitale, 86, said biopsy results confirmed the diagnosis and that he will begin therapy. It marks his fifth cancer battle, following previous fights with lymphoma, vocal-cord cancer, lymph-node cancer, and earlier melanoma. Despite the diagnosis, Vitale said he remains optimistic, noting he has beaten cancer four times before and is “fully confident” he will do so again.
— North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson has officially declared for the NBA Draft, confirming his one-and-done season after a standout year with the North Carolina Tar Heels. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds and was widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the upcoming draft class. His season was shortened by injuries, including a broken hand and later a broken thumb. Wilson earned AP All-America second-team honors.
MLB
— Paul Skenes allowed one hit over six innings and Brandon Lowe drove in five runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 16-5 rout of the Washington Nationals. Lowe became the first Pirates player since 1920 to record at least five RBIs in back-to-back games. Pittsburgh broke the game open with a 10-run sixth inning.
— Aaron Judge and Trent Grisham both homered twice as the New York Yankees scored on a game-ending wild pitch in a three-run ninth inning to overcome Mike Trout’s two homers and five RBIs in an 11-10 win over the Los Angeles Angels that stopped New York’s five-game losing streak.
— Kyle Schwarber homered twice and drove in three runs as Cristopher Sánchez pitched six innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 13-7.
— Justin Wrobleski pitched two-hit ball over a career-high eight innings, while Andy Pages hit a three-run homer as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 4-0. The Dodgers (12-4) have won eight of 10 and lead the NL West. New York lost its sixth straight and was shut out for the fourth time this season.
— Angel Martínez and Brayan Rocchio homered as the Cleveland Guardians beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3. The Cardinals Jordan Walker hit his major league leading eighth HR.
— Josh Naylor broke out of an early season slump with two home runs to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros and complete a four-game sweep. Naylor, who entered the game batting .102.
— Jeremiah Jackson hit a grand slam and a solo homer, while Pete Alonso delivered the go-ahead two-run blast as the Baltimore Orioles rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-7. Arizona led 7-1 in the sixth behind home runs from Ketel Marte and Nolan Arenado, but the bullpen collapsed late.
— Nathan Eovaldi allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings, while Jake Burger homered twice and drove in four runs, as the Texas Rangers snapped the Athletics’ five-game winning streak with an 8-1 victory.
— Agustín Ramírez and Connor Norby each homered as the Miami Marlins defeated the Atlanta Braves 10-4. Atlanta first baseman Matt Olson played in his 799th consecutive game, passing Nellie Fox for the 11th-longest games played streak in major league history.
