PALACE CITY LEGION BASEBALL
— Mitchell’s Palace City Post 18 Legion Baseball was swept on Monday night at Renner, losing by scores of 8-3 and 7-5. In game two, Post 18 rallied with two runs in the seventh inning and brought the tying run to base before Renner recorded the final out. In Game 1, Renner built a 5-1 lead after four innings before winning 8-3. Post 18 dropped to 4-4 on the season and returns to action Wednesday with a road doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 East.
— Palace City Post 18 Junior Legion baseball hosts Yankton in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 pm.
— Palace City 14U teener baseball hosts Brookings on Tuesday at 5 pm.
— Palace City 13U baseball hosts Huron on Tuesday at Noon.
— The Fellowship of Christian Athletes Football Camp is scheduled for Thursday, June 25 at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell. The camp is open to students entering grades 5-8 this fall and will run from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch until 1:30 p.m. The camp will be hosted by Mitchell Kernel Football, with coaches and players from Dakota Wesleyan leading instruction. The cost is $25 per player. Campers should wear T-shirts, shorts and football cleats, and bring tennis shoes in case activities move indoors because of weather. Registration is available through the Mitchell Kernel Activities website. Questions can be directed to Head Coach Pat Larson.
— Freshman Hadleigh Wilson captured two individual state championships to lead Mitchell at the South Dakota High School Clay Target League state tournament. Wilson won the Class 2A varsity girls trap title with a score of 94 and added the junior varsity girls skeet championship with a 77. Teammate Trinity Wilson also earned a state title, winning the varsity girls skeet competition with a score of 79. Mitchell placed third in the Class 2A varsity team trap standings with a score of 455, five targets behind champion Platte-Geddes, which claimed its third straight state title.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins start a three-game series at Detroit on Tuesday at 5:40 pm. Minnesota is coming off a four-game series vs. Kansas City last weekend where the Royals won three out of four games. The Twins sit a season high seven games under .500 at 30-37, three games back in the AL Wild Card race.
— Iowa baseball fans can now enter a ticket lottery for the Minnesota Twins vs. Philadelphia Phillies game at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville. Registration is open through June 11, with winners selected June 17 and tickets going on sale June 18. General public ticket sales open June 30. The Aug. 13 matchup marks the Twins’ first appearance at the Field of Dreams site. A minor league game between the Iowa Cubs and St. Paul Saints is set for Aug. 11.

— Victor Wembanyama had 32 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the San Antonio Spurs picked up a 115-111 victory that cut the New York Knicks’ lead to 2-1 in the NBA Finals. The Spurs handed the Knicks their first loss in 46 days as New York had their 13-game winning streak, the second-longest in NBA postseason history. Jalen Brunson scored 32 points and OG Anunoby had 28 for the Knicks, who lost for the first time since April 23 in Game 3 of their first-round series against Atlanta. Game 4 is Wednesday night in New York at 7:30 pm.

— The Stanley Cup Final shifts to Game 4 on Tuesday night with the Vegas Golden Knights holding a 2-1 series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes after a dramatic Game 3 overtime finish. Game 3 saw Vegas take control early before Carolina stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to force overtime. The Golden Knights ultimately prevailed 5-4 in double overtime. Puck drop for Game 4 is scheduled for 7 pm on ABC at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
NBA
— Two courtside seats for Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden sold for a record $1 million in a charity auction conducted by the New York Knicks. The winning bid was shared by law firm Gibson Dunn and private equity firm Veritas Capital. Proceeds will benefit the Garden of Dreams Foundation, which supports children in need throughout the New York metropolitan area. The seats, located courtside near center court, are normally reserved for celebrity guests and are not available for public sale. The Knicks say the auction generated the largest single donation in the foundation’s history.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— A Texas judge has granted Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby a temporary injunction against the NCAA, potentially allowing him to play this season despite being ruled ineligible for gambling violations. Sorsby admitted making thousands of impermissible sports bets totaling about $90,000 while at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech, including 40 wagers on Indiana teams during his freshman year. NCAA rules typically call for permanent loss of eligibility when athletes bet on their own teams. The ruling allows Sorsby to pursue his final college season, though he will still miss Texas Tech’s first two games. The NCAA says it strongly disagrees with the decision and is considering its legal options. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech in January and is expected to compete for the starting quarterback job.
— Kentucky defensive lineman Nic Smith has died at age 20, the university announced Monday. Campus police received a report Monday morning that a student had been found dead in a residence hall. Authorities are investigating with the local coroner’s office, and officials said initial findings do not indicate foul play. Smith was a sophomore from Georgia, who redshirted last season. He was enrolled in Kentucky’s community leadership and development program.
WORLD CUP
— Iran’s national soccer team arrived in Mexico on Sunday for World Cup preparations, training along the U.S. border as visa issues continue to affect members of its traveling delegation ahead of the tournament later this month. The team arrived in Tijuana after departing Turkey, shifting its training base from Arizona due to complications with U.S. visa processing. Several members of Iran’s entourage remain without clearance to enter the United States, where Iran is scheduled to play three group-stage matches. Iran opens group play June 15 against New Zealand, followed by matches against Belgium and Egypt.
— Somali referee Omar Artan will not officiate at the World Cup after being denied entry into the United States, officials confirmed Monday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said a Somali national traveling to work as a World Cup referee was denied admission after arriving in Miami from Istanbul on Saturday. Customs officials said he was found inadmissible because of unspecified vetting concerns. FIFA said visa and entry decisions are ultimately made by host governments and not the organization.

— Tennis great Roger Federer will return to the U.S. Open this summer for a special exhibition event at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The event will also feature Andy Roddick, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi. Federer is the only player to win five straight U.S. Open men’s singles titles, capturing championships from 2004 through 2008. The exhibition comes just days before Federer is scheduled to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on August 29.

— Caitlin Clark drilled a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Indiana Fever a 78-76 victory over the Washington Mystics on Monday night. Clark finished with 19 points as Indiana built a 17-point lead before Washington rallied.
NFL
— The Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to a one-year contract worth up to $5 million. Sneed, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, was drafted by Kansas City in 2020 before being traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2024. The 29-year-old appeared in just seven games last season because of knee and quad injuries. Sneed has 10 career interceptions in six NFL seasons.

— The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed outfielder Max Kepler, who is still serving an 80-game suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Kepler will not be able to report to the team until June 25, when his suspension ends. Kepler tested positive in January for a substance that’ contained in some products used in body-building stores and has been used in products to promote cattle growth. Kepler was the first player suspended by MLB for the substance since public announcements of the penalty details began in 2005.
— Andrew Vaughn had four hits and four RBIs, including a two-run double that tied the score in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers outlasted the Athletics 15-14 in 12 innings Monday night in Las Vegas in a game that featured 11 homers. The teams totaled 34 hits, and 14 pitchers combined to throw 444 pitches. It was the fourth game in major league history with at least 29 runs and 11 homers.
— Cody Bellinger hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning as the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-5. Paul Goldschmidt and Ryan McMahon homered for the Yankees, who won for the first time in four extra-inning games this season.
— Cristopher Sánchez struck out 10 and allowed two runs in seven innings, while Adolis García hit a two-run homer as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2. Sánchez’s shutout streak of 50 2/3 innings ended in his previous start. On Monday, Sánchez walked one and gave up four hits.
— Josh Naylor hit a grand slam during a five-run fifth inning as the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3. Randy Arozarena also had three hits for the AL West-leading Mariners, who have won 10 of their last 13 games.
— Jose Altuve scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a popout to shallow center field, while Houston Astros left fielder Brice Matthews threw out Mike Trout at home plate in the bottom half to preserve a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Gavin Sheets hit a tying double and then scored the go-ahead run while the Cincinnati Reds misplayed three consecutive bunts by the Padres in the seventh inning, sending San Diego to a 6-2 victory. Freddy Fermin homered in his third consecutive game and drove in two runs for the Padres.
— Daylen Lile hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning after CJ Abrams’ tying base hit as the Washington Nationals defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-3.
— Yandy Díaz hit a leadoff homer and drove in two runs as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1.
