MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels softball lost at Tea Area on Monday 8-1. The Kernels fall to 3-11 on the season and will be at Pierre on Thursday at 4 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls golf competes vs. Yankton in the annual Marchand Cup at Fox Run Golf Course on Tuesday at 2 pm. The Kernels will host the Mitchell Invitational on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course.

— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis continues play at the ESD Conference tournament on Tuesday in Yankton starting at 8 am.

— Mitchell baseball will face No. 6 seed Pierre in their region series that starts on Friday at 7:30 pm. The best two out of three series continues on Saturday at Noon, with a potential third game at 2:30 pm.

— Mitchell track and field competes at the ESD conference meet on Saturday in Watertown at 10 am.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State senior McKenzie Mages opened the NCAA Stanford Regional at even par Monday, tying for 16th place individually after the first round. Mages led the Jackrabbits with four birdies, including three in her first six holes. SDSU sits tied for 10th in the team standings at 17-over-par, alongside Illinois. Molly O’Hara is tied for 44th at 4-over. Stanford leads the team competition at 9-under, and New Mexico State’s Emma Bunch leads the individual field at 7-under. The Jackrabbits return to action Tuesday morning.

— South Dakota State baseball closes out the regular season with a four-game series at Omaha beginning Wednesday at 6 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, earning a spot in the Lincoln Regional in Nebraska. The Coyotes, the No. 4 seed in the regional, will open play against host and top seed Nebraska on Friday. The field also includes Grand Canyon and Louisville. The Lincoln Regional runs May 15 through May 17.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
— Ashlyn Koupal of Wagner has been named South Dakota’s 2026 Miss Basketball award winner by Hansen Anderson Basketball. Koupal finished her career as Wagner’s all-time leading scorer with 2,610 points and added more than 1,200 rebounds. She averaged 28 points per game this season while leading the Red Raiders back to the Class A state tournament. The University of Nebraska recruit and McDonald’s All-American was a four-time all-state selection and earned all-tournament honors four times. Other finalists for the award included Addison Neuendorf of Hamlin, Alyvia Padgett of Brandon Valley, Ashlan Carlow-Blunt of Mahpiya Luta, and Sydney Terveen of O’Gorman. The award was presented Monday night at Wagner High School.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins return home to start a three-game series vs. Miami on Tuesday at 6:40 pm. The Twins are 18-23 on the season, coming off winning two out of three at Cleveland over the weekend. Minnesota sits in last place in the AL Central, but just three games out of first place and 1 ½ games out of a Wild Card spot at the quarter point of the season.

NBA
— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder swept the Los Angeles Lakers out of the second round of the NBA playoffs with a 115-110 victory in Game 4 on Monday night. LeBron James had 24 points and 14 rebounds in the final game of his 23rd season. The Thunder advance to the Western Conference Final where they will play either Minnesota or San Antonio.

— Donovan Mitchell delivered a historic second half Monday night, scoring 39 points after halftime to rally the Cleveland Cavaliers past the Detroit Pistons 112-103 in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Mitchell had just four points in the first half, finished with 43 points overall. Cleveland used a 24-0 run spanning the end of the second quarter into the third. The series is now tied 2-2 heading back to Detroit for Game 5 Wednesday night.

— Spurs star Victor Wembanyama will not face further NBA discipline after being ejected for an elbow to Minnesota’s Naz Reid in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal series. Wembanyama was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected early in the second quarter Sunday after his elbow struck Reid in the neck while battling for a rebound. The NBA reviewed the play but will not upgrade or rescind the ruling. The Spurs center is eligible to play in Game 5 Tuesday in San Antonio, with the series tied 2-2. It marked the first ejection of Wembanyama’s career and only his third flagrant foul of the season.

NFL
— The Buffalo Bills will debut their new stadium in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season, hosting the Detroit Lions on Sept. 17 in the “Thursday Night Football” opener on Amazon Prime Video, the league announced Monday. The Bills’ matchup was among three schedule highlights revealed during NFL television network presentations, with the full 2026 schedule set for release Thursday. The Dallas Cowboys will open the season at the New York Giants on Sept. 13 in NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” opener and will host the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 26 on Fox.

— Former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor during the 2026 season, the team announced Monday. Peterson, who played for the Vikings from 2007 to 2016, will be honored at halftime of a home game this season, with the specific date to be determined when the NFL schedule is released Thursday. A seven-time Pro Bowl selection with Minnesota, Peterson holds franchise records for career rushing yards and touchdowns and won the NFL MVP in 2012 after rushing for 2,097 yards. He will become the 29th member of the Vikings Ring of Honor.

— The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to hand over Arrowhead Stadium to FIFA next month as the venue undergoes its final transformation for World Cup matches. Arrowhead Stadium, which has been modified to meet FIFA field requirements, will host six group-stage matches, a Round of 32 game and a quarterfinal during the tournament. The first match is set for June 16, featuring defending champion Argentina against Algeria. The renovations include removing permanent seating, adding modular sections, upgrading the playing surface and installing an air system beneath the field to support the grass. During the tournament, the venue will be known as Kansas City Stadium. The stadium will revert to NFL use after the World Cup knockout matches conclude in early July.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey reiterated his support for a 16-team College Football Playoff on Monday, pushing back on a Big Ten proposal to expand the field to 24 teams as discussions over the postseason format continue. Sankey said further expansion must be backed by data and analysis rather than speculation, adding that the SEC has already supported research behind a 16-team model. The College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams in 2024 and will remain at that size through the 2026 season after decision-makers failed to reach an agreement on further changes.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum has received a $1 million raise under a new six-year contract signed last week following the Hawkeyes’ run to the Elite Eight, their first since 1987. The deal raises McCollum’s salary to $4.3 million for the 2026-27 season, with $100,000 annual increases through 2032. Iowa finished 24-13 and reached the Elite Eight in McCollum’s first season before falling to Illinois in the regional final.

MLB
— Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has undergone season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle, the team announced Monday. Correa was injured last week while taking swings in the batting cage and later confirmed the tear would require surgery with an expected recovery time of six to eight months. Correa, who was batting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs, had recently returned to Houston in a trade after four years with the Minnesota Twins.

— Rafael Devers homered early and drew a bases-loaded walk that broke a seventh-inning tie as the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 in the opener of a four-game series. The Dodgers have dropped eight of 12, including three straight blowout losses. They’ve scored three runs or fewer in nine of those 12 games. Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. Mookie Betts was 1 for 5 with a single in his first game since April 4 after returning from the injured list.

— Julio Rodríguez homered and Randy Arozarena added two hits to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-1 win over the Houston Astros. It’s Seattle’s franchise-record eighth straight win over the Astros. Seattle’s Cal Raleigh went 0 for 4 to continue a 0 for 36 slump since his last hit on April 27.

— The Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the New York Yankees 3-2. Yankees left hander Ryan Weathers carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up his first hit on an Adley Rutschman single. Moments later, Coby Mayo hit a three-run homer off reliever Brent Headrick to erase a 2-0 Yankees lead.

— Jonathan Aranda hit a home run and drove in three, while Richie Palacios had three hits and three RBIs, as the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5, their 15th win in their last 17 games. Tampa Bay has won 10 straight and 20 of 21 when scoring four or more runs.

— Joey Cantillo pitched six scoreless innings, while rookie Travis Bazzana capped a five-run third inning with a two-run double as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-2. The Guardians improved to 28-4 against the Angels in Cleveland since the start of the 2014 season. The Angels also lost for the 16th time in their last 21 games.

— Michael Soroka allowed three singles over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, while Geraldo Perdomo drove home the game’s only run as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Texas Rangers 1-0.
