MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels gymnastics opened its 2025–26 season with a triangular win on Tuesday night in Yankton, scoring 143.3 points, well ahead of Parkston/Ethan/Hanson/Mount Vernon (134.95) and Yankton (134.35). Kyanna Gropper won the all-around (37.25) and three of the four individual events, including the night’s top score on balance beam (9.7). Mitchell also swept the top four spots on the uneven bars. Mitchell competes at the Pierre Invitational on Saturday.
— Mitchell Kernels wrestling takes on Tea Area and Chamberlain in its first competition of the season. The triangular in Tea starts on Friday at 5 pm.
— Mitchell Marlins girls hockey will be at Watertown on Friday, followed by a home game vs. Brookings on Saturday at Noon.
— Mitchell Marlins boys hockey plays at Huron on Friday, followed by a home game vs. Brookings on Saturday at 8 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 14 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball lost at No. 4 Dakota State on Tuesday night 74-62. The Tigers faced an early deficit, trailing 25-18 after the first quarter and being down 12 points at halftime. Emma Yost had a game-high 15 points, while Rylee Rosenquist added 14 points. Avery Broughton had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers fall to 5-3 on the season and jump back into GPAC play on Saturday at Concordia at 2 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball lost at Dakota State on Tuesday night 64-53 to fall to 5-5 on the season. Sophomore guard Tyson Stevenson had a game-high 14 points for the Tigers, while Anthony Riggans had 11 points and Randy Rosenquist Jr. added 10 points. DWU will be at Concordia on Saturday at 3:45 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball swept the weekly GPAC awards on Tuesday with Rylee Rosenquist being named the conference Offensive Player of the Week, while Avery Broughton was named Defensive Player of the Week. Rosenquist put up a season-high 24 points last week in a 79-70 road win at No. 9 Briar Cliff. Meanwhile, Broughton grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and two block vs. Briar Cliff.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will face Concordia (Neb.) on Wednesday at 7:30 pm, followed by The Master’s University on Thursday at 7:30 pm in pool play at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City. The Tigers lost 3-0 to Concordia on September 18. The third ranked Bulldogs are 25-3 on the season.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball returns home to face Weber State on Wednesday night at 7 pm. SDSU enters the week 6-2 on the year after going 1-2 at the Cancun Challenge last week. The Jackrabbits ended the trip with an 82-70 win over Kansas State. Brooklyn Meyer was named the Summit League Player of the Week on Tuesday for the third time in four weeks. She averaged 20 points and six rebounds while shooting 62% over three games in Mexico.
— South Dakota State men’s basketball will be at Northern Arizona on Wednesday at 7 pm. SDSU returns to the U.S. after going 0-2 last week at the Cancun Challenge in Mexico, losing to Utah Valley and UC-Irvine.
— South Dakota State volleyball will face Arizona on Friday night at 6:30 pm in Stanford, California, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
— South Dakota State football heads west to face third-seeded Montana on Saturday in Missoula. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Central in the second round of the FCS playoffs.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ole Miss moved up a spot to No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings with Texas A&M falling from No. 3 to No. 7 after losing to Texas. Undefeated Ohio State and Indiana remained at 1 and 2 in the rankings, while Georgia moved to third and Texas Tech rose to No. 4. The rest of the top 12: Oregon, Mississippi, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, BYU and Miami. The final rankings come out Sunday, the day after the conference title games determine the five automatic qualifiers for the 12-team bracket.
— Kalani Sitake will remain BYU’s head football coach after agreeing to a new long-term contract extension on Monday. Sitake is 83-44 since taking over at BYU in 2016. The Cougars have won 11 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2006 and 2007. Penn State made Sitake a top candidate in its search to replace James Franklin, who was fired earlier this season after a 0-3 start in Big Ten play. Sitake had conversations with Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft and received an offer reportedly worth eight figures annually to become the next coach at Penn State.
NASCAR
— Denny Hamlin, a three-time Daytona 500 winner, has outlined the financial struggles facing NASCAR teams. He testified Tuesday in a federal antitrust trial against NASCAR, saying his team spent over $700,000 in fees to the series in 2022. The trial began Monday, brought by 23XI Racing, co-owned by Hamlin and Michael Jordan, and Front Row Motorsports. They argue NASCAR’s revenue model is unfair. Hamlin said losing a single sponsor could erase profits. He also criticized a TV deal that favors streaming over traditional sponsors. The trial is expected to last two weeks. NASCAR denies any wrongdoing.

— Hall of Fame players Ferguson Jenkins, Jim Kaat, Juan Marichal, Tony Pérez, Ozzie Smith, Alan Trammell and Robin Yount are among 16 members of the contemporary era committee that will consider an eight-man Hall ballot that includes Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy. Each voter can select up to three candidates, and 75% or more of ballots are needed for election. Anyone chosen will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 26 along with players voted in by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, whose balloting will be announced on Jan. 20.
— Dylan Cease and the American League champion Toronto Blue Jays finalized their $210 million, seven-year contract on Tuesday, the largest free-agent deal in team history. A right-hander who turns 30 on Dec. 28, Cease went 8-12 with a 4.55 ERA in 32 starts this year for San Diego, striking out 215 hitters in 168 innings.

— Chris Paul says the Los Angeles Clippers are sending him home from their road trip. The decision puts a shocking twist on what is expected to be the veteran point guard’s final NBA season. The struggling Clippers are in Atlanta for a road game against the Hawks on Wednesday night. Los Angeles lost at Miami on Monday night to fall to 5-16 on the season. The 40-year-old Paul is playing his 21st NBA season, and he strongly hinted last month that it will be his last. The 12-time All-Star has earned four All-NBA first team selections, and he has the second-most assists in NBA history, but is only averaging 2.9 points and 3.3 assists per game this season.
— Anthony Edwards scored 34 of his season-high 44 points in the second half, including a layup to force overtime as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated New Orleans 149-142. Rudy Gobert finished with 26 points for Minnesota, including three dunks in overtime, and 13 rebounds. The Pelicans, with the worst record in the league (3-19), have lost 13 of their last 14 games.
— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 38 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder held off the Golden State Warriors 124-112 on Tuesday night. The Thunder improved to 21-1 on the season.
— Jaylen Brown scored a season-high 42 points, sealing the game with a breakaway dunk in the final seconds as the Boston Celtics beat the New York Knicks 123-117. Mikal Bridges led New York with 35 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, going 8 for 12 from 3-point range.
— Tyrese Maxey scored 20 of his 35 points in the third quarter as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Washington Wizards 121-102.
— Harrison Barnes scored 31 points and De’Aaron Fox had 29 as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Memphis Grizzlies 126-119. San Antonio improved to 6-2 since losing Victor Wembanyama to a strained left calf on Nov. 15.
— Scottie Barnes scored 28 points to help the Toronto Raptors edge the Portland Trail Blazers 121-118. Barnes was 10 for 18 from the field. He also had seven rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.
