MITCHELL KERNELS
The Mitchell Kernel boys’ basketball team nearly overcame a 17-point third quarter deficit against Jonesboro of Georgia, but fell 58-51 Tuesday night at the Corn Palace as part of the Hoop City Classic. The Kernels jumped out to an early eight point lead and led 15-12 after the first quarter, but the Cardinals outscored Mitchell 19 to 9 in the second quarter to go ahead 31-24 at halftime. Owen Raml scored 14 points with five rebounds while Colton Smith and Lincoln Bottum both scored 11 points. Smith also had eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Mitchell was originally slated to play Totino-Grace (Minn.) in the Hoop City Classic today, but Totino-Grace had to withdraw from the event due to illness. The Kernels next game will be against Harrisburg on Tuesday at the Mitchell High School Gym.
Mitchell Kernels wrestling teams lost duals against Aberdeen Central on Tuesday. Aberdeen Central won the boys’ dual 56-23 and the girls’ dual 57-17. Blaze Sevigny and Micah Bennett recorded wins by fall with Rocky Clark winning by technical fall. For the Kernel girls, Frankie Kranz won by fall in the extra period while Danny Borja won by technical fall. The Mitchell girls will compete in the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational on Friday while the Kernel boys’ compete in a triangular on Jan. 8 at Harrisburg.
Mitchell Kernels girls’ basketball, 1-3 on the season, is back in action today to face Sisseton on the third and final day of the Hoop City Classic at 1:30.
Mitchell Kernels gymnastics will host the four Sioux Falls public schools and Watertown for a meet on Saturday at 11:30 am.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
Taliyah Hayes came off the bench to score 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including four 3-pointers, to lead the 10th-ranked DWU women’s basketball team to a 90-63 win over Northwestern Tuesday night at the Corn Palace. Avery Broughton added 20 points and seven rebounds and Rylee Rosenquist finished with 10 points for the Tigers who outscored the Red Raiders 29-14 in the third quarter after leading by eight points at halftime. DWU shot 56% from the field and was 13 of 18 from the free throw line. DWU is back in action on Saturday at Midland for a 2 p.m. game in Fremont, Nebraska.
Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball, 7-8 on the season, will be at Midland on Saturday.
DWU Men’s Wrestling will be back in action in the new year at the Missouri Valley Duals in January.
DWU Women’s Wrestling will be back in action in the new year at the York Open in Nebraska.

South Dakota State men’s basketball, 7–8, opens Summit League play on Thursday at home against Omaha at 4:15 pm.
South Dakota State women’s basketball, 10-4 on the season, starts Summit League play vs. St. Thomas on Thursday, Jan. 1 at 2 pm.
No. 8 South Dakota State wrestling faces Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 2 at 6 pm at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

USD men’s basketball, 8-7 on the season, opens Summit League play on Wednesday at North Dakota State at 4 p.m.
South Dakota women’s basketball team closed non-conference play with a win on the home floor Tuesday afternoon, defeating the College of Saint Mary 95-42. Olivia Moore led the Coyotes, scoring 15 points and added seven assists off the bench. USD women’s basketball opens Summit League play Saturday at Kansas City.
