WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC
— Italy pulled off a major upset at the World Baseball Classic Tuesday night, defeating the United States 8–6 and putting the Americans’ tournament hopes in jeopardy. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit two home runs and drove in four runs for Team USA, but the comeback fell short when Aaron Judge struck out with a runner on to end the game. Italy built an early 8–1 lead behind strong pitching from Michael Lorenzen and home runs from Kyle Teel and Jac Caglianone. The U.S. has finished pool play and now needs Italy to beat Mexico to guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals or have Mexico win and score at least five runs in the victory.
WNBA
— The WNBA and its players’ union held nearly 12 hours of negotiations on Tuesday in an effort to reach a new collective bargaining agreement before the upcoming season. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and union director Terri Carmichael Jackson said discussions are “going in the right direction,” but more work remains. The biggest issue is revenue sharing between the league and players. A deal is needed soon to keep the offseason schedule on track and allow the season to begin as planned on May 8.
NFL
— A blockbuster NFL trade has fallen apart after a failed physical. The Baltimore Ravens have backed out of a deal to acquire star pass rusher Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders. He had 10 sacks last season and has recorded double-digit sacks four times in his career.
— Veteran quarterback Geno Smith is headed back to the New York Jets, the team that originally drafted him in 2013. The Jets acquired Smith from the Raiders in a trade that swaps late-round draft picks, with New York sending a sixth-rounder and receiving a seventh. Smith, 35, started for a Raiders team that went 3–14 last season and had two years left on his contract, though the deal is expected to be renegotiated. The move comes as Las Vegas prepares for the NFL Draft, where the Raiders are expected to select Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the number one overall pick.
