COLLEGE SPORTS
— Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed an executive order Tuesday allowing the state’s public and private colleges to give athletes who graduated from high school in 2022 a fifth year of eligibility, despite an NCAA rule excluding athletes who have already played four seasons. NCAA President Charlie Baker said the governor cannot change NCAA eligibility rules and criticized the move as an attempt to give Ohio schools an advantage. The issue remains tied up in federal court, as athletes challenge the NCAA’s restrictions. The dispute could affect opportunities for college athletes to earn money through name, image and likeness deals and share in school revenue.

— A North Carolina man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in a college basketball point-shaving scheme that generated more than $3 million in fraudulent wagers. Prosecutors said 30-year-old Jalen Smith recruited players to deliberately underperform during games in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, offering bribes of $10,000 to $30,000 per game. The scheme allegedly involved nearly 30 games and at least 26 other defendants. Smith pleaded guilty to bribery, wire fraud and a separate felony gun possession charge. He also must pay $1.1 million in restitution.

NFL
— Lawyers for Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores say a recently unsealed report prepared for the Las Vegas Raiders contains racial stereotypes and shows unlawful retaliation for his discrimination lawsuit against the NFL. The report was prepared in 2024 when the Raiders were looking for a head coach. It listed Flores’ strengths and weaknesses, including comments about his upbringing, personality and relationships with white-collar individuals. Flores sued the NFL and three teams in 2022, alleging racial discrimination in coaching hires.

— Los Angeles Rams left tackle Alaric Jackson has been suspended two games without pay for hitting Buffalo Bills linebacker Bradley Chubb after Monday night’s 37-34 overtime loss. The NFL announced the suspension Tuesday, and Rams coach Sean McVay said Jackson will appeal. Jackson is scheduled to miss games against Arizona and Las Vegas. Jackson confronted Chubb after an exchange of words following the game and struck him in the face, knocking off his hat.

— San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw will miss Monday night’s game against Washington after losing his appeal of a one-game suspension for head-butting Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones. The NFL upheld the suspension Tuesday after Greenlaw was ejected during Sunday’s 32-29 San Francisco victory. The incident followed a late hit on Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold near the sideline. Greenlaw will also forfeit nearly $200,000 in salary.

— A Miami jury has found wide receiver Tyreek Hill liable for two counts of battery in a civil case brought by his estranged wife, Lakeeta Vaccaro. The jury awarded Vaccaro $500,000 in compensatory damages but rejected eight other claims, including allegations of assault and continuing domestic violence. Hill denied most of the allegations during the trial but acknowledged shoving Vaccaro in one incident. The verdict’s impact on Hill’s NFL future remains unclear as he continues recovering from a dislocated knee and torn ligaments suffered in September 2025.

— Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat has been suspended two games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Sweat will miss Sunday’s game at Atlanta and Chicago’s Oct. 22 home game against New England. Sweat has two sacks this season and 59 in his NFL career.

WNBA
— The WNBA has moved Games 3 and 4 of the Finals between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries to State Farm Arena in Atlanta to accommodate more fans. Game 3 is now scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21, while Game 4 will tip off at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, Oct. 24. The arena holds more than 17,000 fans, compared with about 3,500 at the Dream’s usual home, Gateway Center Arena. The Finals begin on Saturday in San Francisco.

SOCCER
— FIFA is proposing a $6.3 billion fund for soccer development from 2027 through 2030, more than doubling planned funding for national associations and other organizations. The proposal would provide each of FIFA’s 211 member associations with $25 million over four years, up from $10 million, and $99 million to each of the six continental confederations. FIFA says the additional funding would emphasize women’s and youth soccer. The plan is expected to be finalized by the FIFA Council in December and requires approval at the FIFA Congress in March 2027.
