MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball ran its winning streak to six straight on Tuesday night with a 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 19-25, 27-25, 15-8) win over SF Jefferson. Its Mitchell longest winning streak since Oct. 2017 and the first time they have defeated Jefferson in five all-time meetings. Kenna Soulek was our KORN Player of the Match with a career-high 38 digs. Audrey Miller finished with 16 kills, while Addie Siemsen had 44 assists. 18 digs and 12 kills. Sienna Sabers led Jefferson with 18 kills, while Natalie Welty added 17 kills. The Kernels improve to 12-4 on the season, 7-0 at home and 4-0 in five set matches. Mitchell will be at No. 4 Watertown on Thursday at 6:30 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf finished fourth at The Statesman Tournament hosted by William Penn on Tuesday with a two-round team score of +119. Allison Meyerink shot +20 of the two days, shooting at +12 (84) on Tuesday. Ashton Austreim was eight overall at +23.
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Kayleigh Hybertson has been named the GPAC’s Volleyball Setter of the Week and Lizzie Tyler has been named the Defender of the Week. In a pair of sweeps against Doane and Hastings, Hybertson had 67 assists. She has 714 assists so far this season. Meanwhile, Tyler registered 44 digs between six sets. She has 382 digs on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan goaltender Zackary Stephens has been named the GPAC’s Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Stephens had a season-best performance against No. 25 Midland, recording seven total saves to earn DWU a top 25 victory, and move into a second-place tie in the GPAC. Stephens has registered 23 saves on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 12-8 on the season and 6-4 in the GPAC, host Morningside on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers are tied with Dordt for fourth place in the GPAC with six conference matches remaining.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at last place Waldorf on Wednesday at 5 pm. The Tigers are tied with Midland for second place in the GPAC with a 4-1-1 conference record with just five regular season matches remaining.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Waldorf on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers are in eighth place in the GPAC with a 2-1-3 conference record, while Waldorf is 0-6 in conference play.
— Dakota Wesleyan football is on a bye this week before hosting Waldorf for homecoming on Saturday, October 25th at 2 pm.

— South Dakota State volleyball, 11-3 on the season and 5-0 in the Summit League, host North Dakota State on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer, 9-2-4 on the season, will be at USD on Saturday at 3 pm.
— South Dakota State football will be at Murray State on Saturday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame starts at 4 pm on KORN. SDSU improved to 6-0 on the season with a 31-3 win this past Saturday vs. Northern Iowa on Hobo Day.

— For the third time this season, a South Dakota Coyote has been named a Missouri Valley Football Conference Player of the Week honor. Senior kicker Will Leyland was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. Leyland connected on all four field goals in the 19-14 victory at Indiana State on Saturday. The four made field goals tied the USD single-game record. His longest field goal of the day was 42 yards.
— USD volleyball will be at Kansas City on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— USD football will be at Northern Iowa on Saturday at 1 pm.
— USD women’s soccer hosts SDSU on Saturday at 3 pm.

— Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched a three-hitter for the first postseason complete game in eight years as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 to take a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. Teoscar Hernández and Max Muncy each hit a solo homer as the shifts to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Thursday. Muncy set a new Dodgers team record with his 14th career playoff HR. Yamamoto allowed a home run to Jackson Chourio on the first of his 111 pitches but shut down the Brewers the rest of the way. The right-hander’s complete game was his first in the majors.
— Major League Baseball is having its most-viewed postseason in the U.S. in 15 years through the Division Series. Viewership is averaging 4.3 million through the Division Series, a 30% increase over last year and the best since 2010. Last Friday’s 15-inning thriller between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers averaged 8.7 million viewers on Fox. It was the most-watched division round game since 2011.
— Mike Shildt is retiring after two seasons as the San Diego Padres’ manager. The Padres confirmed the 57-year-old Shildt’s decision Monday. In a letter to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Shildt said he is retiring because “the grind of the baseball season has taken a severe toll on me mentally, physically and emotionally.” Shildt went 183-141 and led San Diego to two playoff appearances during his brief tenure. The Padres won 90 games this season and finished second in the NL West before being eliminated by the Chicago Cubs in a three-game wild-card playoff series.
— Alex Bregman plans to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to multiple reports Tuesday night. The move was expected and doesn’t rule out the veteran third baseman returning to Boston, but for now, he’ll be a free agent for a second straight offseason. Last offseason, the 31-year-old Bregman didn’t find a home until the start of spring training, when he agreed to a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox in mid-February that included opt-outs after 2025 and ’26. He got off to a fast start in Boston before suffering a quad injury that sidelined him from late May to July 11. He finished the season with a .273 average, 18 home runs and 62 RBIs.
— A lawyer for the family of Tyler Skaggs says the Los Angeles Angels should be held responsible for the drug overdose death of the star pitcher back in 2019. The team’s attorney, however, said they were not aware of drug use by Skaggs or they would have done something to help. The comments came in opening statements Tuesday in the trial for a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Skaggs’ family.

— The Dallas Mavericks have extended the contract of head coach Jason Kidd. The team announced a multiyear extension Tuesday night without revealing the length or other details of the deal. Kidd is going into his fifth season as their head coach. He led them to the NBA Finals two seasons ago and won a championship as their point guard in 2011.

— The UConn women are the No. 1 team in the country in The Associated Press Top 25 preseason basketball poll. The Huskies received 27 out of 31 first-place votes. South Carolina, last season’s runner-up, is second and received the other four first-place votes. UCLA and Texas are third and fourth, with LSU fifth. UConn is ranked No. 1 in the preseason for the 13th time since 1995.
