NBA
— Kawhi Leonard’s trade to the Toronto Raptors is on hold pending the outcome of the NBA’s investigation into whether the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented salary cap rules. It does not necessarily mean that the trade is off. The Raptors said they still want Leonard, while the Clippers again insisted that they are not guilty of any wrongdoing. But the probe could lead to penalties that include a substantial fine, the loss of drafts and even the voiding of a player contract if the league finds there was a deliberate circumvention of salary cap rules.

— Former Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier wants to play in the NBA while he fights sports gambling charges that sidelined him last season. Bail conditions that bar him from contact with certain players and limit his travel could complicate his potential return. The U.S. District Judge denied a defense request to modify Rozier’s bail conditions so he can practice and play with potential witnesses as long as they don’t talk about the case. The judge said it would be impossible to police Rozier’s on-court conversations. The Judge admonished Rozier for already violating the no-contact provision of his $3 million bond by sending a text message to a person he was told not to communicate with. Rozier was contacting the person to tell the person he was on the no-contact list.

— Former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban is accusing team governor Patrick Dumont of freezing him out of business opportunities regarding the team’s proposed arena relocation. Cuban alleges that Dumont has engaged in adversarial business practices. The dispute stems from a plan to move the Mavericks 10 miles north of downtown to a new arena scheduled to open in 2031. Cuban, who still owns 27 percent of the franchise, claims his businesses are contractually entitled to participate in the development.

NCAA
— An Ohio judge has granted a preliminary injunction for 24 men’s and women’s college basketball players suing the NCAA for eligibility, claiming the new age-based model unfairly shuts them out of further competition. Judge Christopher Wagner said Thursday the NCAA eligibility rules have been applied to 2022 high school graduates in an arbitrary manner, adding the plaintiffs would suffer “irreparable injury” without an injunction. Wagner’s ruling allows the athletes in the lawsuit an opportunity to enter the transfer portal. He scheduled a conference for Aug. 4 to prepare for a trial.

OLYMPICS
— Russia’s track and field federation says it has gone to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn a World Athletics ruling suspending its athletes from international events due to the war in Ukraine. World Athletics excluded all athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus from its international events in March 2022, days after Russian forces invaded Ukraine. It kept that suspension in place at a council meeting last week. Since then, the International Olympic Committee has eased its restrictions on Russia ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and recommended other sports bodies do the same. Russia hasn’t competed under its own flag at a world athletics championships since 2015, when the Russian track federation was suspended over widespread doping.
