Lil’ Kernel Academy Hosts Open House for New Mitchell Child Care Center

MITCHELL, S.D. — Lil’ Kernel Academy will welcome families to an open house Friday evening as the child care provider showcases its new center and expanded services in Mitchell.

The open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the academy’s facility at 2100 N. Kimball St. Families can tour classrooms, participate in children’s activities, learn about enrollment opportunities and enjoy light refreshments.

The academy said the event is open to the public and is intended for families seeking child care now or planning for future needs.

Lil’ Kernel Academy’s mission is to provide high-quality care and education in a nurturing, reliable environment where children feel safe, supported and prepared to grow. The organization said it is expanding from its home-based roots into a licensed child care center after more than 24 years of providing child care in the Mitchell area.

The center emphasizes three core values: nurturing children’s development through caring relationships, partnering with families as a child’s first teachers and supporting educators through professional development and competitive compensation.

The facility includes classrooms tailored to different age groups, beginning with infants as young as 6 weeks and continuing through preschool-aged children. Programs are divided into Baby Kernels, Tiny Sprouts, Kernel Climbers, Little Poppers and Star Kernels classrooms, each designed to meet age-specific developmental needs.

Infant and toddler classrooms maintain a 1-to-5 staff-to-child ratio, while the preschool classrooms operate at a 1-to-10 ratio. The academy offers age-appropriate learning activities, outdoor play, sensory exploration and early literacy instruction to help prepare children for kindergarten.
