Abundant Corn Harvest Challenges Northeastern South Dakota Farmers

In northeastern South Dakota, a surplus of corn has led to logistical challenges as harvest season concludes.

Farmers are dealing with long wait times at elevators, limited operating hours, and an abundance of corn piles. Some farmers are opting to leave corn uncut in the field.

Grant Rix, a Crop Watcher from Groton, anticipates farmers selling corn to southern South Dakota, where more ethanol plants are available.

Despite lower-than-expected yields, Rix is satisfied with the overall results of the harvest.

Looking ahead, preparations for the next spring include addressing soil compaction and experimenting with different tillage equipment to enhance seed-soil contact.

Rix Farms is staying busy over the winter months with shop and office work, as well as transportation of machinery and grain.
