Firefighters from multiple departments responded Friday morning to a fire at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wessington Springs that caused significant damage to the building.
Crews were dispatched just after 9 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the church roof vents.
According to Fire Chief Eric Schroeder via the Wessington Springs True Dakotan, heavy smoke was visible on the west side of the church when crews arrived.
Firefighters initially entered from the northwest side before attacking the fire through the main doors on the east side to get it under control.
The fire extended into walls and ceilings, making suppression difficult and labor-intensive.
Fire damage was largely contained to the front, west portion of the church, but smoke and water damage spread throughout the entire structure. The parish hall and other additions were not damaged by fire.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Alpena, Woonsocket, and Gann Valley, with nearly 40 firefighters on scene.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Church officials say upcoming Mass services have been relocated to Woonsocket as the parish begins planning next steps.
