Thursday, August 6
— Dell Rapids PBR scored 13 runs in the second inning and shut out Colome 16-0 in five innings on Thursday morning in the opening round. Zack Puetz led the offensive, hitting a grand slam and adding a three-run double in the second inning. Puetz finished 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Dell Rapids finished with 19 hits, including four hits from Weston Hansen.
— Garretson scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the third on the way to an 11-1, seven-inning victory over Lesterville on Thursday. Sam Siegel hit a home run, scored four runs and had four RBIs, while Robin Chute added three hits and three RBIs. Derek Fischer earned the win on the mound, throwing all seven innings while allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts. Garretson will face Dell Rapids PBR at 8 p.m. on Sunday in second round action.
— Wynot (Neb.) erased an early two-run deficit and defeated Lake Norden 6-3 Thursday night. The Expos scored five unanswered runs after trailing 3-1, taking the lead for good in the fifth inning. Jesse Lundal picked up the win, allowing three runs, just one earned, over six innings.
— Alexandria overcame four errors on Thursday night to beat Crofton (Neb..) 6-4. The Angels fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning thank to two errors, but rallied with six unanswered runs, including a game-tying solo homer by Ben Wilber and a go-ahead RBI triple from Dakota Munger in the fourth. Alex Mizsak picked up the win, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings. AJ Wilber pitched the final three innings for the save. Alexandria improved to 16-3 on the season.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Brooks Lee’s two-run single in the eighth inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. The Twins trailed 3-1 in the eighth when Josh Bell had a one-out RBI single. Royce Lewis was then hit by a pitch, and Lee followed with his bases-loaded single to right. Minnesota ended a four-game losing streak and moved within a half game of Texas for the final AL wild card spot. Lewis led off the fifth with his 13th homer of the season, extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games. Kody Funderburk worked a scoreless seventh, Andrew Morris pitched the eighth and Yoendrys Gómez struck out two in the ninth for his 15th save. Minnesota begins a three-game series at Milwaukee on Friday night at 6:40 pm
— Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan is headed to the injured list after an MRI revealed a mild left glute strain. Ryan has struggled in his last three starts, allowing 16 earned runs, including seven home runs, since July 20. His ERA has risen from 2.85 at the All-Star break to 3.65. Twins manager Derek Shelton said he was relieved the injury was considered minor and believes it explains Ryan’s recent struggles with velocity and fastball command. Right-hander Zebby Matthews is expected to be called up from Triple-A to start Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Meanwhile, Twins center fielder Byron Buxton remains with the team during its road trip while recovering from a right hip impingement. Buxton has been on the injured list since July 29.
NBA
— An ESPN report says Clippers star Kawhi Leonard allegedly had an undisclosed sponsorship agreement worth millions with South Dakota-based Daktronics, the company that designed the massive Halo Board at the Intuit Dome. The claim was made by former ESPN contributor Pablo Torre, citing anonymous sources who alleged the deal was used to circumvent the NBA salary cap by funneling money to Leonard. The Clippers did not immediately comment, and a Daktronics spokesperson said Leonard does not have an active contract with the company. The reported deal comes as the NBA continues investigating Leonard’s separate sponsorship agreement with a now-bankrupt financial company. The Clippers and owner Steve Ballmer have repeatedly denied any effort to bypass the salary cap.
NFL
— Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth up to $75 million, making him the NFL’s highest-paid running back. The deal includes $51 million guaranteed. The extension comes just two days after Atlanta signed Bijan Robinson to a record-setting deal that briefly made him the league’s top-paid running back. Gibbs rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns last season while adding 77 receptions for 616 yards and five more scores.
— Running back Jonathan Taylor has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $44 million with the Indianapolis Colts. Taylor finished third in the NFL in rushing last season with 1,585 yards and led the league with 18 touchdown runs. The former second-round pick from Wisconsin enters the season with 7,598 career rushing yards and 69 touchdowns. He needs 1,629 more rushing yards to pass Edgerrin James for the Colts’ all-time franchise record.
NASCAR
— NASCAR is changing its Cup Series stage-break procedures in an effort to reduce laps run under caution and create more green flag racing. The new rule takes effect this weekend at Iowa Speedway and will remain in place for the rest of the season. If a natural caution occurs with 10 or fewer laps remaining in Stage 1 or Stage 2, the stage will be considered complete at the time of the caution, with that same caution period serving as the scheduled stage break. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell said the change comes after fan frustration during the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis, where long caution periods near stage breaks limited green flag action.
HORSE RACING
— Major changes to horse racing’s schedule are creating uncertainty about the future of the Triple Crown. The Preakness Stakes will move to three weeks and a day after the Kentucky Derby, while a new six-race championship series featuring the Derby and Belmont Stakes will move forward without the Preakness. The Kentucky Derby will remain on the first Saturday in May, with the Preakness scheduled for Sunday, May 23, 2027. The Belmont Stakes is set for June 5, creating a short turnaround that could make it difficult for horses to compete in both races. The changes come after several recent Derby winners skipped the Preakness to focus on the Belmont, renewing debate over whether the traditional five-week Triple Crown schedule is too demanding for modern horses. The Triple Crown has not had a winner since Justify swept the Derby, Preakness and Belmont in 2018.

— Boston’s Caleb Durbin lined a single to center field in the 13th inning to score NIck Sogard as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 12-11 in a game that lasted more than four hours. Boston won its eighth straight and 10th in 11 games. The Red Sox have won 10 consecutive series. Chicago led 7-6 in the ninth and Boston tied the game in four straight innings.
— The Cubs Pete Crow-Armstrong scored on a throwing error in the 11th inning after Alex Bregman hit a two-strike, two-out homer in the ninth as Chicago rallied for a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. It was the 11th walk-off win this season for the Cubs.
— Dustin May won his Milwaukee debut, while Jackson Chourio and Gary Sánchez hit home runs as the Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2. After losing the opener, the Brewers won the final three games in the series. May, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade deadline deal on Monday, gave up two runs and three hits in six innings.
— Ronald Acuña Jr. hit two home runs as the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 11-3 to complete a three-game sweep. The Braves extended their season-best winning streak to eight games.
— Foster Griffin struggled in his first start for the Cleveland Guardians, allowing five runs in four innings of a 13-6 loss to the Mets that gave last-place New York a three-game sweep. Cleveland has lost 11 of 14 and fell one-half game behind Texas in the race for the final AL wild card.
— Jackson Merrill and Ty France both had two hits and an RBI, while four relievers combined for five scoreless innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1. The Padres moved a game behind Arizona for the third and final wild-card spot.
— Cristopher Sanchez became the first 15-game winner in the majors this season, while the Phillies had eight doubles in a 7-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Sanchez allowed two runs on six hits in five innings.
— Detroit’s Dillon Dingler homered for the third straight game and finished with three hits and three RBIs as the Tigers defeated the Seattle Mariners 11-0. Detroit won for the fifth time in six games and moved within a game of Texas in the race for the final American League wild-card spot. The Tigers have scored at least eight runs or more in seven of their last eight games.
— Zach Neto hit a three-run home run to lift the Los Angeles Angels over the Baltimore Orioles 4-1.
— Elly De La Cruz hit his fourth career leadoff home run, one of four homers by Cincinnati, as the Reds beat the Athletics 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep. The A’s have lost eight straight games and 12 straight series.
