Demolition of the former Mitchell High School building has finally begun. It started at the northeast corner of the building at the lower gymnasium as heavy equipment began tearing into the outer wall allowing crews to remove what’s left of the bleachers and other items before the entire structure comes down.
Superintendent Joe Childs says it will require a great deal of work. “It’s my understanding that before any of these materials leave the site, they’ll be ready to be used for some other purpose,” said Childs. “And so that takes just a bit more time to do that on site, and so it is going to take some time before they’re completely done with this with this building demo.”

Once the site is cleared and graded additional work starts including the vacation of Windsor Street. “And there will be two more practice fields, practice fields for soccer, football, and softball,” Childs continued. They’ll also use them for track events and things.”
Plus additional parking on the south end. Childs is hoping the entire project will be finished toward the end of summer.
