Military vehicle and semi tanker truck collide north of Mitchell

Two people were taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle crash involving a POET tanker truck hauling liquid carbon dioxide and an out of state military vehicle at the intersection of National Guard Road and Highway 37 north of Mitchell around 7 am Wednesday.

First-responders survey damage following a crash between a semi tanker truck and military vehicle north of Mitchell.

Davison County Emergency Management Director Jeff Bathke says there’s no danger to the public. “It’s carbon-dioxide refrigerated liquid, which is a non-hazardous material,” said Bathke. “Very little fuel actually spilled.”

The South Dakota Army National Guard says two soldiers from the 1244th Transportation Company based in North Riverside, Illinois, and one civilian driver were involved in the crash. The National Guard unit was returning home to Illinois after training in the Black Hills during the Golden Coyote training exercise.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Troopers are interviewing those involved.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety will release more information later.
