A new federal farm bill is two years overdue but finally writing a new one will be a priority when Senators and Congressmen return to Washington next month.
Senator John Thune says much of the outline has been written into the just passed budget bill.
He says it’s critical to get farm legislation passed. “We need Farm Bills in South Dakota,” said Thune. “Commodity prices are at all-time lows, input costs are at all time highs, farmers are losing money every year, and that’s not a sustainable business model for agriculture. So we got to get more demand out there and we’ve also got to make sure that the safety net programs, the risk management programs are working well.”

Thune is optimistic in finding the sixty votes needed to pass a final version of a farm bill.
He, along with Senator Mike Rounds and Congressman Dusty Johnson, participated in an ag policy forum at Dakotafest on Wednesday.
