MITCHELL, S.D. – Canova and the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks advanced to the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament quarterfinals with second-round victories Wednesday night at Cadwell Park.
Canova rallied past Redfield Dairy Queen 9-6, breaking a 5-5 tie with two runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth.
Dawson Bakker delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh, and Riley Genzlinger followed with an RBI triple. Kendall Gassman earned the victory after throwing three scoreless innings of relief.
Hartford/Humboldt defeated the Flandreau Cardinals 5-1 behind a strong pitching performance from Curtis Flint. Flint struck out nine and allowed two hits and one unearned run in six innings. Tyler Tappe followed with three scoreless innings, striking out five.
J.J. Jesson went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for the Wood Ducks. Brodie Herr and Keaton Vessells added three hits apiece.
The quarterfinals begin Thursday. Parkston faces Dell Rapids PBR at 5:30 p.m., followed by Alexandria against Volga at 8 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on KORN News Radio, FM 101.3/AM 1490 and streaming online at KORNRadio.com.
Friday’s quarterfinals feature Clark against the Dell Rapids Mudcats at 5:30 p.m. and Canova against the Wood Ducks at 8 p.m.
The winners advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
