STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – WEDNESDAY
— Canova rallied past Redfield Dairy Queen 9-6 Wednesday night at Cadwell Park. The Gang broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Dawson Bakker delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh, while Riley Genzlinger added an RBI triple. Kendall Gassman earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
— The Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks defeated the Flandreau Cardinals 5-1. Curtis Flint picked up the win, striking out nine while allowing one unearned run and two hits over six innings. Tyler Tappe threw three scoreless innings in relief, striking out five. J.J. Jesson went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Brodie Herr and Keaton Vessells also had three hits apiece.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis competes at the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Thursday and Friday at Tomar Park in Sioux Falls. Action starts on Thursday at 11:30 am.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts the season on Friday by hosting Huron. The girls match will be at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field, followed by the boys match at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball is ranked No. 16 in the NAIA preseason coaches’ poll. The Tigers are coming off a 2025 season where they finished 20-12 and made advanced at the NAIA national tournament in Sioux City. The Tigers return 11 players who saw action in their final match of the national tournament, including All-Americans Kayleigh Hybertson and Lizzie Tyler, who are both back for their senior seasons. Northwestern is the preseason No. 1 team after finishing as the national runner-up last season. Eastern Oregon is No. 2, Concordia is No. 3, Indiana Wesleyan is No. 4 and Corban (Ore.) rounds out the top five. Midland is the other GPAC team ranked, coming in at No. 20.
— Dakota Wesleyan football has been picked ninth in the GPAC preseason coaches poll. The Tigers received 32 points in the voting by league coaches. DWU returns second-team All-GPAC offensive lineman Gavin Pischke, along with fifth-year senior Cody Winslow, who returns from a leg injury. The Tigers also return honorable mention All-GPAC defensive players Carter Skogsberg and Trevor Sladky. Quarterback Jed Jenson is expected to lead the offense. Dakota Wesleyan went 4-7 last season under third-year head coach Alex Kretzschmar. The Tigers open the season Aug. 29 at Dakota State in Madison.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer opens its season tonight, hosting Manitoba at 7 p.m. The Jackrabbits are coming off their third straight Summit League tournament championship. The Jacks were picked second in this year’s Summit League preseason coaches poll behind Oral Roberts. SDSU returns Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year Mallorie Benhart, along with second-team all-conference selections Mia Bosch, Ellie Gusman and Jenna Maloy. The Jackrabbits play six of their first seven matches at home, including Sunday against MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 4-0 victory over Northern Iowa on Wednesday in Cedar Falls. The Coyotes scored twice in each half and outshot Northern Iowa 21-5 with eight corner kicks. USD return to action Sunday at Nebraska. Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. in Lincoln.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Alan Roden hit a go-ahead double in a five-run third inning, while seven Minnesota players drove in a run as the Twins rallied from an early deficit to beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-5. Minnesota has won six straight series at Target Field. Down 4-1 heading into the third, Kody Clemens hit an RBI single before Luke Keaschall tacked on a sacrifice fly and Victor Caratini tied the game at 4 with a single. Roden followed up with a double that gave Minnesota the lead for good. Zebby Matthews pitched five innings and allowed four runs on six hits to pick up the win. Yoendrys Gómez earned his 17th save after allowing a run in the ninth. The Twins take on the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night on Netflix at 6:30 pm in Dyersville, Iowa, in the Field of Dreams game.

— The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold to venture capitalist Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger for a record $12.5 billion. The agreement would make the Lakers the most expensive U.S. professional sports franchise ever sold. Mark Walter purchased controlling interest in the Lakers from the Buss family last year at a valuation of $10 billion, but is now selling after just 10 months of official ownership. The deal still needs approval from the NBA’s board of governors, which is expected to consider it at a meeting in September. If approved, the deal would continue the dramatic rise in NBA franchise values, with the Lakers’ $12.5 billion price tag more than double the valuation of the Boston Celtics when they were sold last year.
— Russell Westbrook is retiring from the NBA after 18 seasons. The 2017 league MVP and career leader in triple-doubles announced his retirement on Wednesday. Westbrook, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft out of UCLA, spent his first 11 seasons with Oklahoma City before playing for Houston, Washington, the Lakers, the Clippers, Denver and Sacramento. Westbrook finishes his career with 209 triple-doubles, the most in NBA history. He was a two-time scoring champion, led the NBA in assists three times, was selected to the NBA’s 75th anniversary team. Westbrook played his final season with Sacramento, averaging 15.2 points and 6.7 assists over 64 games.

— Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has sent LSU a cease-and-desist letter over the school’s decision to give his No. 5 jersey to current cornerback D.J. Pickett. Daniels, LSU’s 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, does not want the school using his name, image and likeness in connection with the number. His representative says Daniels believed his jersey number would not be given to another player. Pickett, a former five-star recruit, wore No. 3 last season but will wear No. 5 this year. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said Pickett was promised the number when he committed to LSU in 2024. The No. 5 jersey was not officially retired after Daniels left LSU.
MLB
— The Tampa Bay Rays became the second East Coast team in major league history to go 9-0 on a West Coast trip, beating the Athletics 8-4 behind a three-run homer from Liam Hicks. The Rays swept three-game series at Colorado and Seattle before scoring 30 runs in their three wins over the Athletics. Tampa Bay joins the Boston Red Sox, who did it in 1977, as the only teams to go 9-0 out West. The Rays became the 13th team since 1900 to go 9-0 on any trip, and they matched the longest road winning streak in franchise history.
— Kaz Okamoto hit the go-ahead RBI single and Myles Straw had a two-run double in a five-run eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Boston 6-4, handing the Red Sox their fifth consecutive loss. The Blue Jays have won three straight and 11 of 16. They sit just 1 ½ game back of Texas for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Jo Adell homered and Angel Martínez had three hits as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-4. The Guardians are 7-1 against the Tigers this season.
— Jackson Merrill hit a tying sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and Luis Campusano followed with a two-out RBI single as the San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 for a three-game sweep. The Padres have won five straight and 15 of 19 to move into the National League’s second wild-card spot ahead of Arizona and Philadelphia.
— Luis Castillo struck out 10 in seven shutout innings, helping the Chicago White Sox beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0. Castillo allowed one hit, a Sal Stewart single in the first, and walked two in his first win with Chicago.
— Mike Trout had three hits and two RBIs, while George Klassen earned his first major league win in the Angels 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers. Klassen gave up two runs and five hits over six innings.
— Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Hunter Feduccia homered as the Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Kansas City Royals with a 4-2 victory. 1B Freddie Freeman stayed in the game for L.A. after a scary moment in the eighth inning when he fell down the Royals’ dugout stairs while trying to catch a foul popup. Tommy Edman then pinch-hit for Freeman in the bottom of the eighth.
— Trent Grisham homered twice and hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning as the New York Yankees erased an early deficit and pulled away for a 10-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
— Alex Bregman hit three homers in a game for the first time and drove in a career-high seven runs as the Chicago Cubs routed the Washington Nationals 12-6. Dansby Swanson also went deep for Chicago, which pulled within three games of NL Central-leading Milwaukee.
— Tyler Mahle gave up one runs and four hits over six innings, while fellow trade deadline acquisition Lane Thomas homered in the Atlanta Braves’ 6-3 victory over the New York Mets. Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Riley hit back-to-back homers during a three-run seventh for the Braves.
— Alec Burleson drove in three runs, including a two-run double during a four-run fifth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1. Burleson finished 5 for 10 with two doubles and five RBIs in the series as the Cardinals took two of three from the Phillies and moved one game over .500 (61-60).
— Houston’s Nick Allen hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as the Astros beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1.
— The Rockies Brett Sullivan hit a three-run homer in the second inning as Colorado, despite walking 10 batters, held on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4.
— Griffin Conine and Heriberto Hernández homered as the Miami Marlins extended their winning streak to four games with an 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
