DWU Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Mustang Derby, Meyerink Wins Third Tournament of the Season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Both Dakota Wesleyan Golf teams competed at the Mustang Derby, hosted by Morningside University.

The women would place second as a team in a field of nine schools, finishing 14 strokes behind the hosting Morningside Mustangs. Three of the four women competing for DWU finished in the top 10, led by Allison Meyerink, who won her third tournament of the year individually. Her even-par 72 in the second round secured the 150 (+6) final tally for Meyerink to secure first place by a single stroke.

Sara Sudenga finished just two strokes behind Meyerink, recording a 152 (+8) with a steady effort in what has been an impressive run in her fall campaign. Ashton Austreim tied for eighth place individually with a final score of 164 (+20) in one of her top performances of the season, and Dakotah Larson rounded out the women’s lineup, tying for 18th place by recording a 169 (+25) after a 13-stroke improvement on the second day.

The men’s team was led by Peyton Bettcher, who had a best round of 73 (+1), and followed it up with a solid second-round effort to finish tied for eighth place on the leaderboard with a score of 149 (+5). He was the lone male competitor for DWU’s lineup to finish in the top 10.

Benjamin Wilber and Dakota Munger would be the next for the lineup, posting solid scores to set them in 47th and 50th place, respectively. Wilber’s 79 (+7) in the first round set him up to finish at 163 (+19), while Munger saw a three-stroke improvement on day two to score 165 (+21). Jack Olson and Will Jarding rounded out the lineup with scores of 172 (+28) and 177 (+33). As a team, the men finished 10th out of 12 squads, which included a field of local junior colleges and GPAC competition.

DWU Women’s Golf will compete at the Statesman on October 13th and 14th, while Men’s Golf will be back in action in November.
