MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls wrestling split a pair of duals in Harrisburg on Thursday night, while the boys lost both matchups vs. Yankton and Harrisburg. The Mitchell girls defeated Yankton 43-28 before losing to Harrisburg 42-36. The Mitchell boys lost to Harrisburg 64-13 and Yankton 61-17. The girls are back on the mats at the Harrisburg Invitational on Friday, Jan. 16, then both the Mitchell boys and girls will host the Jerry Opbroek Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the high school gym.
— Mitchell Kernels basketball hosts Yankton on Friday as part of a doubleheader with the girls game at 6 pm and the boys at 7:30 pm at high school gym.
— Mitchell Kernels gymnastics competes at the Brookings Invitational on Saturday.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball, 12-4 on the season and 8-2 in the GPAC, hosts Mt. Marty on Saturday at 2 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball, 8-9 on the season and 3-6 in the GPAC, hosts Mt. Marty on Saturday at 3:45 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State men’s basketball defeated Denver on Thursday night 87-79 in Brookings. Damon Wilkinson led four Jackrabbits in double figures with 19 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting. After going 0-for-10 from three in the first half, SDSU hit 6-of-8 three’s in the second half. The Jacks, 9-9 on the season and 2-1 in the Summit League, will be at North Dakota State on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s basketball, 12–4 overall and 2–0 in Summit League play, hosts Oral Roberts on Saturday at 1 p.m. SDSU has won 64 straight Summit League regular season games, the longest active regular season conference win streak in the nation and sixth longest streak in NCAA history. Since the start of the 2020-21 season, the Jackrabbits are 82-1 in the Summit League regular season.
— No. 8 South Dakota State wrestling heads to the NWCA National Duals this weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Jackrabbits are 4-0 in dual competition this season. They will face Harvard on Friday at 4 pm, followed by Northern Illinois at 6 pm. On Saturday, SDSU faces Campbell and Central Michigan.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s basketball lost to Oral Roberts on Thursday night 83-61 in Vermillion. The Coyotes shot just 29% from the field and were led by Molly Joyce, who finished with a game-high 24 points. USD, 11-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Summit League, will be at St. Thomas on Saturday at 4 pm.
— USD men’s basketball, 8-9 on the season and 0-2 in the Summit League, host Denver on Saturday at 1 pm.

— Miami will head back home for a shot at its first national championship since 2001 after beating Mississippi 31-27 on Thursday night in a College Football Playoff semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl. QB Carson Beck scrambled for a 3-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left for the game winning score. He threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. QB Trinidad Chambliss had put Ole Miss ahead with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dae’Quan Wright with 3:13 left. They will face either top-ranked Indiana or Oregon for the national title on Monday, January 19th at their home field in Miami.

— The Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Mike McDaniel following a 7-10 season in which Miami missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The decision Thursday ends McDaniel’s four-year tenure in Miami. The Dolphins went 35-33 under McDaniel, reaching the playoffs in his first two seasons but losing in the first round each time. The Detroit Lions have reached out to Mike McDaniel about their offensive coordinator opening. The Lions are looking for their third offensive coordinator in three seasons.
MLB
— Two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal asked for a record $32 million in salary arbitration while the Detroit Tigers offered the left-hander $19 million. Skubal was the most prominent of the 18 players who swapped figures with their teams. Those without agreements face hearings before three-person panels from Jan. 26 to Feb. 13. A two-time All-Star, the 29-year-old Skubal will be eligible for free agency after the World Series. He is 54-37 with a 3.08 ERA in six major league seasons.

— Patrick Kane became the 50th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals, scoring his second goal of the game into an empty net with 3:53 left to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-1. The 37-year-old Kane is the fifth U.S.-born player to reach the milestone, following Mike Modano, Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick and Joe Mullen.

— The Minnesota Timberwolves held a moment of silence before their game on Thursday night for Renee Good, the 37-year-old woman fatally shot in her car by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. Good was killed following a brief confrontation with ICE officers Wednesday morning on a Minneapolis street about 3 miles from Target Center. The shooting fueled further protests around the Twin Cities in light of a recent surge of ICE activity in the area.
— Anthony Edwards became the third-youngest player in NBA history to reach 10,000 career points as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 131-122. Edwards at 24 years and 156 days old was beaten to the mark by LeBron James and Kevin Durant. He is one of seven players who’ve hit 10,000 points before age 25. Edwards had 25 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Minnesota improved to 25-13 on the season and currently sit in fourth place in the Western Conference as they near the halfway point of the season. The Timberwolves will be at Cleveland on Saturday at Noon on Amazon Prime Video.
— Pascal Siakam scored 30 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made a driving layup with 11 seconds left to lift Indiana to a 114-112 win over the Charlotte Hornets that snapped the Pacers’ 13-game losing streak and gave head coach Rick Carlisle his 1,000th career win. Carlisle had been stuck on 999 victories since his injury-depleted team beat Sacramento on Dec. 8. He improved to 1,000-891 in 24 seasons as an NBA coach.
— Lauri Markkanen had 33 points and seven rebounds and the Utah Jazz snapped a five-game losing streak with a 116-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
— The game between the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls at the United Center on Thursday night was postponed after a nearly two-hour delay due to condensation on the court. The officials cited “court conditions” for the delay in starting the contest. There appeared to be moisture on the floor at the United Center, which is also home to the Chicago Blackhawks, who played Wednesday and will skate at the arena again Friday. Workers tried to dry the surface using mops and towels. The game was officially postponed at 8:53 p.m., prompting boos from the crowd. A rescheduled date for the game was not immediately announced.
