MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer played to a 1-1 tie vs. Pierre on Thursday night to move to 2-7-3 on the season. The Kernels will be at Aberdeen Central on Tuesday at 4 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer was shutout on Thursday, losing to Pierre 2-0 to fall to 4-8 on the season. Mitchell ends the season with two straight road matches, starting on Tuesday at Aberdeen Central at 6 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels football hosts Tea Area for Homecoming this Friday at 7 pm. The KORNer Booth pregame show starts at 6 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys golf will compete at the ESD conference meet on Monday in Brandon.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis will compete at the ESD conference meet on Monday and Tuesday in Yankton.

— Mitchell volleyball is on the road for their next four matches, starting on Tuesday at SF Lincoln at 6:30 pm on KORN.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football will be on the road Saturday at Briar Cliff at 1 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 9-6 on the season, will be at Midland on Saturday at 5 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer, 4-5 on the season, will be at Hastings on Saturday at 5:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer, 1-2-4 on the season, travel to Hastings on Saturday at 8 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball opened Summit League play on Thursday with a 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12) win over Omaha. Hannah Klein led SDSU with 17 kills, while Sylvie Zgonc added 16 kills. Setter Rylee Martin finished with 53 assists and the Jackrabbits had 73 total digs on the night. SDSU improved to 7-3 on the season and will be at Denver on Thursday.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer started its Summit League schedule with a 6-0 home win vs. St. Thomas on Thursday. SDSU’s unbeaten streak now reaches nine straight matches. They host North Dakota on Thursday at 7 pm.

— No. 2 ranked South Dakota State football host Mercyhurst on Saturday at 2 pm with the Jackrabbit pregame show starting at Noon on KORN News Radio.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD volleyball lost 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 15-25, 26-24) at North Dakota on Thursday to open up Summit League play. Laruen Medeck finished with a team-high 14 kills, while Avery Van Hook had 33 assists. The Coyotes hosts Oral Roberts on Saturday at 12:30 pm.

— USD football will go on the road this week to face North Dakota State to open up Missouri Valley Conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm on Saturday.

— USD women’s soccer, 4-2-4 on the season, open Summit League play on Sunday vs. St. Thomas at 1 pm.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Byron Buxton hit two home runs including a second-straight leadoff homer, while Bailey Ober threw six shutout innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Texas Rangers 4-0. The Twins end the season with a three-game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies starting tonight at 5:45 pm.

— Detroit’s Jahmai Jones led off the game with a home run as the Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak, beating Cleveland 4-2 to move back into a tie with the Guardians for the AL Central lead. Detroit and Cleveland are 86-73 with three games left to play. The Guardians hold the tiebreaker after going 8-5 in the season series. The Tigers head to Boston, while Cleveland will host Texas, which has lost nine of 10.

— Houston’s Christian Walker homered and drove in three runs, while Framber Valdez had 10 strikeouts in seven innings as the Astros beat the Athletics 11-5 to snap a five-game losing streak. Rookie Nick Kurtz homered twice and drove in the three runs for the Athletics. Kurtz’s 35 home runs are the second-most ever by an A’s rookie.

— Giancarlo Stanton had a go-ahead, three-run double as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 to remain tied with Toronto atop the AL East going into the final three games of the regular season.

— Daulton Varsho hit his fifth career grand slam and George Springer added a two-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 6-1. Toronto, which had lost six of seven, closes with three games at home against Tampa Bay.

— Seattle’s Eugenio Suárez matched his career high with his 49th homer, leading the Seattle Mariners over the Colorado Rockies 6-2 for their 17th win in 18 games. Seattle won its 11th straight home game, tying the team record set in 2001. Colorado dropped to 4-17 in September and its 116 losses are the most in the NL since the 1962 New York Mets lost 120.

— Francisco Lindor homered to reach the 30 HR’s and 30 steals for the second time as the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 8-5 to remain in position for the final National League wild card spot.

— Noelvi Marté robbed Bryan Reynolds of a game tying home run in the ninth inning as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1. Cincinnati’s Nick Lodolo tied his career high with 12 strikeouts before leaving with a right groin injury in the seventh.

— Shohei Ohtani matched his career high with his 54th home run, while Freddie Freeman went deep twice as the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their 12th NL West title in 13 years by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-0.

— Walker Buehler pitched five scoreless innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat Miami 1-0, eliminating the Marlins from the wild-card race.

— Vinnie Pasquantino homered and drove in three runs, while Bobby Witt Jr. had four hits as the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-4.

— Rookie Dylan Beavers homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in their home finale.

NBA
— The Los Angeles Lakers are leaving LeBron James’ future in his hands as he enters a contract year, with the team expressing a desire for him to retire as a Laker, though they will respect his decision on how long he plays. LeBron, who picked up a $52 million option for this upcoming season, is in his 23rd year in the league. Meanwhile, Lakers head coach J.J. Redick, entering his second year, signed a multiyear contract extension after leading the team to 50 wins and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference last season.

NFL
— Seattle’s Jason Myers made a 52-yard field goal as time expired, while Sam Darnold threw for 242 yards and a touchdown, as the Seahawks withstood a late rally by Kyler Murray and the Cardinals to beat Arizona 23-20. The Seahawks blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead but still won their eighth straight over Arizona. The Cardinals trailed 20-6 midway through the fourth.

— New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields remains in concussion protocol but is progressing toward a possible return against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night. Fields was listed as a full participant as he practiced for the first time since suffering a concussion in the Jets’ loss to Buffalo in Week 2. He will have two more full practices on Friday and Saturday to determine if he’ll be ready to play against the Dolphins.
