MITCHELL, S.D. — The Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks knocked off defending state champion Parkston 2-1 Saturday in a rematch of last year’s Class B state amateur baseball championship game at Cadwell Park.
Blake Svoboda threw a complete game for the Gamecocks, striking out 14 while allowing five hits and one run. Devon Garry drove in the eventual winning run with an RBI triple in the sixth inning. Parkston cut the deficit to one in the seventh, but Svoboda held the Rays scoreless the rest of the way.
Carter Sommer took the loss for Parkston after throwing eight plus innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits, struck out nine and walked seven while throwing 128 pitches.The Rays turned three inning-ending double plays, including two started by Platte right fielder Kenyon Kuiper. Kuiper threw out Cam Quigley at home plate in the eighth inning to keep the game a one-run contest.
Parkston finished the season 14-10.
Hartford/Humboldt will continue its tournament run Tuesday when it faces the Dell Rapids Mudcats at 8 p.m.
Dell Rapids advanced with an 11-3 victory over Winner/Colome on Saturday afternoon. The Mudcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Connor Hanson had three hits and three RBIs, while Landon Ruesink added a two-run home run. Reece Arbogast earned the win for Dell Rapids, throwing six innings. Winner/Colome finished the season 11-8.
Canova also advanced Saturday night, defeating Castlewood 7-1. The Gang and Castlewood were tied 1-1 before Canova broke the game open in the fifth inning. Garrett Gassman delivered a three-run double to give Canova the lead. Luke Koepsell threw a complete game for Canova, allowing six hits and one run while striking out five. Canova advances to face Redfield Dairy Queen at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Redfield earned its spot in the Wednesday matchup with a 10-3 win over Burke on Saturday night. Bennett Osborn hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs for Redfield, while Peyton Osborn threw a complete game. He struck out six and allowed one earned run over nine innings. Redfield broke the game open with five runs in the eighth inning.
The state amateur tournament continues Sunday with four games at Cadwell Park. Larchwood faces the Flandreau Cardinals at 11 a.m., followed by Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks against Four Corners at 1:30 p.m.
The second round begins Sunday evening with Parkston Mudcats facing Kimball/White Lake at 5:30 p.m. Dell Rapids PBR then takes on Garretson at 8 p.m.
