Mitchell Kernels softball was scheduled to start its season today at Watertown, but the game has been postponed with a makeup date to be announced. Mitchell’s season opener will now be April 7th at Pierre and the home opener on April 9th against Aberdeen Central.
Mitchell Kernels track and field starts its season on Tuesday at a meet host at Dakota Wesleyan starting at 11 a.m.
The Mitchell Spring baseball team opens the season on Thursday when they host Douglas for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
Avery Broughton and Emma Yost earned All-American honors from the NAIA on Monday. Broughton, the junior out of Corsica, earned First Team All-American honors following honors for being the GPAC’s Defensive Player of the Year alongside a First Team All-Conference nod. She was also named GPAC Player of the Week five times throughout the course of the season and set a new DWU program single-season record with 77 recorded blocks. Throughout the schedule, Broughton averaged 14.6 points per game, shot 52.3% from the field, and grabbed 8.4 rebounds per contest. The accolade marks Broughton’s first All-American honor of her Dakota Wesleyan career. Broughton’s First Team nod is the program’s first since Kynedi Cheeseman during the 2019-20 season. Yost, a junior from Wagner, earned Second Team All-American honors. Yost adds the second All-American distinction of her career to that includes three consecutive First Team All-GPAC nods. Her 15.1 points per game led the Tigers and shot 46.2% from the field. Yost sits at ninth on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,553 total points. Macy Sievers of Dordt (Iowa) was named the NAIA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Sievers is joined on the first team by her teammate Gracie Schoonhoven. Tabor Teel of Dakota State was also named to the first team and Briar Cliff’s Mallie McNair made the third team.
Dakota Wesleyan softball team extended its winning streak to eight with a doubleheader sweep of Briar Cliff on Monday. In game one, Alison Ernsberger struck out 11 allowed just one run on seven hits in the Tigers’ 6-1 victory. Ashlen Johnson had two hits including a two-run home run to lead the offense. In the second game, DWU scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn a 6-4 win. Lydia Yost had a two-run home run for DWU. The Tigers, 26-11 overall and 9-1 in the GPAC, is off until April 8th when travel to Forest City, Iowa to play Waldorf.
The DWU baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision at home in ten innings to Dakota State on Monday. The Tigers scored five times in the first but the Trojans chipped away at the deficit and would tie the game at five in the top of the ninth and would score two runs in the top of the 10th. DWU plated one run in the bottom of the 10th. Landon Reusink and Caleb Meyers had two hits each with Reusink driving in two runs. The Tigers, 14-15 on the season and 5-7 in the GPAC, is off until Monday when they take on Briar Cliff. The four‑game series against Briar Cliff has been rescheduled for Monday, April 6, and Tuesday, April 7. The Tigers will open the series with two games in Sioux City on April 6th at 1 p.m. DWU will host the final two games of the series on April 7th. Game one is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
Dakota Wesleyan Men’s & Women’s Golf teams competed in the Briar Cliff Spring match play event on Monday in Sioux City. The women finished both matches they played tied 2-2 against Hastings and Briar Cliff. Allyson Meyerink won both matches she played including a dominating 8 & 7 victory in one match. The DWU men dropped both matches on Monday losing 5-0 to Dordt and 3-2 to Briar Cliff. Round 3 of matches are scheduled for Tuesday.
DWU Track & Field will be back in action at the USD Early Bird meet starting on Friday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
With inclement weather in the forecast for the remainder of the week, a number of adjustments are being made to South Dakota State’s baseball schedule. Tuesday’s home game against Briar Cliff has been rescheduled to April 22 and will replace a previously scheduled contest against Dakota Wesleyan. The format and schedule for the Jackrabbits’ home Summit League series against Omaha, originally slated for Thursday through Saturday, has yet to be determined. No games will be played Thursday or Friday, with the final determination of a series schedule to be made later in the week. The Jackrabbits are 9-19 overall and 4-5 in league play.
South Dakota State softball completed a three-game sweep at home against North Dakota on Monday behind a 4-1 Summit League victory. South Dakota State, 20-20 overall and 5-1 in Summit League play, is currently scheduled to begin a three-game series in Brookings against Kansas City on Thursday.
South Dakota State’s Brooklyn Meyer has accepted an invitation to participate in the Women’s College All-Star Game presented by Lilly, which will be played Saturday at Global Credit Union Arena in Phoenix. Meyer, selected by a panel of national media experts, is one of 20 athletes from across the country who will compete in the All-Star Game.
SOUTH DAKOTA
The South Dakota women’s basketball team will host Illinois State in the semifinal round of the WNIT on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. It’s South Dakota’s second WNIT semifinal appearance. The first came in 2016 when the Coyotes won the championship in the final basketball game played in the DakotaDome. The other semifinal has Arkansas State hosting Marshall Wednesday night. The WNIT championship game will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m. central time at a site to be determined following the games on Wednesday night.
South Dakota softball is off until next Tuesday when they travel to Omaha to play Creighton at 6 p.m.
