MITCHELL KERNELS

The Mitchell Kernel boys golf finished in fourth-place at the two-day East/West Invite that concluded yesterday in Rapid City. Mitchell had a total of 294 on Tuesday at Meadowbrook Golf Course to finish with a 615 to move up two spots from where they began. Sioux Falls O’Gorman won the event with a 583 followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln with 591. Asher Dannenbring finished in fourth place overall after he carded a 69 on Tuesday for a total of 144. He finished two shots behind the top medalist. Carter McCormick followed Monday’s 81 with a 69 on Tuesday to finish in eighth place with a total of 150. Everett Morrison shot a 154 and Dawson Adams 167. Mitchell competes in the Pierre Invite on Tuesday.

The Mitchell Kernel girls’ soccer team beat Sioux Falls Christian, the number one ranked team in Class A, 3-1 yesterday at Joe Quintal Field. The Mitchell Kernel soccer teams travel west for two road matches, facing Rapid City Stevens on Friday and Rapid City Central on Saturday. The Kernels will host Brookings for a doubleheader on Saturday, August 30th.

Mitchell Kernels girls’ tennis, 6-1 in duals, travels to Harrisburg to face the Tigers in a dual on Thursday afternoon. Mitchell will be in Sioux Falls on Saturday for duals with O’Gorman and Roosevelt.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN

The Dakota Wesleyan Men’s Cross-Country team was picked to finish tenth and the Women’s Cross Country team was picked to finish twelfth in the 2025 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Coaches Preseason Polls. Dordt has been picked to win both conference titles. DWU XC will open up its season on September 5th at the Augustana Twilight Meet.

The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team (1-1) will play in the Siouxland Invitational Friday and Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa. The Tigers take on McPherson (Kan.) and Missouri Valley (Iowa) on Friday, and Rocky Mountain (Mont.) and William Penn (Iowa) on Saturday. The Tigers home opener is on September 6th against Waldorf.

The Dakota Wesleyan Women’s Soccer team travels to Wisconsin next Saturday, August 23 for an exhibition vs. St. Norbert College. DWU will open their 2025 season at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex against Bellevue (Neb.) on Saturday, August 30th at 3:00 PM.

The Dakota Wesleyan Men’s Soccer team will open up its season Sunday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa against Mount Mercy. The Tigers’ first home match of the season will be against Providence (Mont.) on Tuesday, September 2nd at 6:15 PM.

The Dakota Wesleyan football team will hold a scrimmage on Friday. There will be a tailgate held on the east side of the DWU/Avera Sports and Wellness Complex at 5:30 PM. Following the tailgate, the scrimmage will take place at 6:30 PM on the football practice fields. The Tigers open its 11-game season at home against Dakota State on August 30th at 7:00 PM at Joe Quintal Field for the Traveling Chamber of Commerce Trophy. The Tigers will be at Joe Quintal six times this year with homecoming set for October 25th vs. Waldorf.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

South Dakota State junior goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart was named the Kwik Star Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week award winner, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Benhart had a save in SDSU’s 1-1 draw versus Mizzou and had five saves in a 1-0 defeat to Kansas. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 25 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top 25 rankings. The SDSU women’s soccer team (0-1-1) hosts Southwest Minnesota State in its home opener Friday at 7 p.m.

SOUTH DAKOTA

University of South Dakota Athletic Director Jon Schemmel yesterday announced a $20 million dollar gift commitment from Denny Sanford to help build a new, state-of-the-art indoor track and field facility. The facility in honor of the Bill and Jill Gassen family and, pending Board approval, will be known as the Gassen Family Fieldhouse. The gift matches the largest gift to South Dakota athletics in its history. The new indoor facility will feature a 200-meter banked track with a pair of perimeter warm-up lanes, plus a 60-meter straightaway. It will also feature a pair of long jump/triple jump pits, two pole vaulting stations, two high jumps over straightaways and a pair of throwing cages. The venue will feature elevated seating for 2,000 spectators and a viewing concourse that opens to the track and field events below. The facility will also include coach offices, a recruiting lounge, a training and nutrition center, and locker rooms. The new facility will also have space for batting cages and practice tennis courts.

USD women’s soccer (1-0-1) hosts Kansas State on Thursday and Morningside on Saturday.

Sioux Falls avoided elimination Tuesday with a 9-0 win over Bonney Lake, Washington. South Dakota now advances in the loser’s bracket. They’ll play Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against Irmo, South Carolina. That game will be on ESPN.

Tickets are on sale for the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame banquet on Sept. 14 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. Social hour begins at 4:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6 p.m., and the program begins at 7 p.m. Tickets available at sdshof.com
