STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – SUNDAY
— The Parkston Mudcats no-hit Kimball/White Lake 5-0 on Sunday at Cadwell Park. Taite Klumb and Landon Waddell combined for the ninth no-hitter in state tournament history and the first since 2016. Klumb threw six scoreless innings, allowing four walks and one hit batter, before Waddell struck out five in three perfect innings of relief. Max Scott went 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, while Luke Bormann went 3-for-4 with a walk and scored four runs.
— Dell Rapids PBR advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 win over Garretson. Drew Sweeter pitched eight innings for PBR, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Dell Rapids scored four runs in the bottom of the first innings after Garretson took an early 2-0 after the top of the first. Weston Hansen had a bases loaded double to drive in three runs for PBR.
— Flandreau rallied for three runs over the final two innings to defeat Larchwood 5-3. Luke Gassman delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, before Jacob Patterson added an insurance run on an infield single and error. Patterson also hit a solo home run in the seventh. Tash Lunday allowed three runs over six innings for Flandreau, while Bret Severtson earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
— The Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks defeated Four Corners 13-2. Curtis Flint drove in four runs, while Keaton Vessells added three RBIs. Four Corners committed 10 errors in the loss. Hartford/Humboldt advances to face Flandreau in the second round Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis begins its regular season on Tuesday when they host Huron and Aberdeen Roncalli in a triangular scheduled for 10 am at Hitchcock Park.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts the season on Friday by hosting Huron. The girls match will be at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field, followed by the boys match at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball begins its season on Friday at the Our Lady of the Lake Varsity Invite. The Tigers will face Saint Francis (Ind.) on 9 am, followed by Montana Western at 5 pm. DWU is coming off a 20-12 season where they advanced to pool play in Sioux City at the 2025 NAIA National Championship
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball will play an exhibition match at Iowa State on Friday at 4 pm. The Jackrabbits start the season at the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu, California, on Friday, August 28th.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer begins its season by hosting Manitoba on Thursday at 7 pm. SDSU finished 13-3-6 last season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Jake Bauers singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th after Luis Lara made a spectacular run-saving catch in the top half of the inning as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-3. Minnesota went scoreless in the top of the 10th after Lara made a leaping catch at the wall on Kody Clemens’ drive to right to prevent a run from scoring. Lara also had made an incredible play in front of the wall to rob Brooks Lee of an extra-base hit in the sixth inning. Minnesota left the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth. Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out nine to increase his major league-leading total to 204. Minnesota’s Connor Prielipp struck out seven and allowed three runs in five innings. The Twins return home after a 3-6 road trip to host the Baltimore Orioles on Monday at 6:40 pm.
NBA
— Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history and a five-time champion as a player with the Boston Celtics, died Sunday at age 86. Nelson coached for 31 seasons, winning 1,335 games and earning three Coach of the Year awards. He led Milwaukee, Dallas and Golden State, making the playoffs 18 times and serving as both coach and general manager for all three franchises. Nelson was known for his innovative, fast-paced style, including the development of the point forward. He coached Golden State’s “Run TMC” teams in the early 90’s and later led the Warriors to an upset of the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in 2007. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
WNBA
— Minnesota Lynx guard Kayla McBride set a WNBA record Sunday by making 10 3-pointers in a 103-90 victory over the Dallas Wings. McBride went 10-for-14 from beyond the arc and scored a career-high 43 points, breaking the previous single-game record of nine 3-pointers. The Lynx also set a franchise record with 18 made 3-pointers and improved to 27-7 with their 12th win in 13 games. Minnesota became the first WNBA team to clinch a playoff berth.
NASCAR
— Ty Gibbs used a late pit strategy call to hold off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell and win Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway. Gibbs took only two right-side tires on his final pit stop. It was the 23-year-old Gibbs’ second career victory and second of the season. Gibbs moved to second in the season standings, 103 points behind Hamlin. The Cup Series heads to Richmond for a Saturday night race.
PGA
— Michael Brennan made five straight birdies Sunday and closed with a 6-under 64 to win the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. Brennan finished at 22-under, matching the tournament record, and earned his second PGA Tour victory in two years. He entered the tournament No. 105 in the FedEx Cup standings but moved to No. 47 with the victory, securing a spot in the 70-player postseason. The FedEx Cup playoffs begin Thursday with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Beau Hossler finished second, while Ben James shot a final-round 61 to finish third.
NFL
— Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has stepped away from football, leaving the Detroit Lions with a question at backup quarterback behind Jared Goff. The 33-year-old Bridgewater was placed on the reserve/retired list Sunday after signing a one-year contract with Detroit in March. The Lions are signing veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs to a one-year, $1.4 million deal. Bridgewater previously played for Minnesota, New Orleans, Carolina, Denver, Miami, the New York Jets, Tampa Bay and Detroit during his 13-year NFL career.
MLB
— Colson Montgomery’s 26th homer of the season, a three-run shot, capped Chicago’s four-run third inning as the White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-3. The White Sox increased their AL Central lead to 3 ½ games over second-place Detroit. Cleveland and Minnesota fell four games back.
— Hao-Yu Lee drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with a pinch-hit single as the Detroit Tigers beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1. The Tigers finished 7-2 on a three-city trip to the West Coast.
— Eduardo Rodriguez struck out nine over seven innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks clinched their first season series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2018 with a 4-2 victory. The Dodgers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Arizona in 10 innings on Saturday.
— Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a go-ahead, three-run homer and pinch-hitter Austin Hays connected for a two-run shot in his first at-bat with San Diego as the Padres beat the AL West-leading Houston Astros 7-2. Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets also went deep for the Padres, who took two of three in the series and remained one game out of a National League playoff spot. Randy Vásquez and three relievers combined on a two-hitter to help the Padres to their 12th victory in 16 games.
— Ian Happ hit a two-run homer and Miguel Amaya added a three-run shot as the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2.
— Cedric Mullins’ RBI single in the fifth inning put Tampa Bay ahead as the Rays beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1 to complete a three-game series sweep. Ian Seymour allowed one run and five hits over six innings with seven strikeouts.
— Pete Alonso had his first two-homer game with the Orioles and drove in four runs as Baltimore beat the Texas Rangers 10-5. Texas holds just a one game lead over Detroit for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs, while Derek Hill singled with the bases loaded in the 12th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies avoided a three-game series sweep with a 7-6 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Jesús Luzardo struck out 12 in seven innings for the Phillies.
— Michael Harris II opened the 10th inning with an RBI single as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Yankees 2-1 to prevent a three-game sweep.
— JJ Wetherholt hit a go-ahead double and Alec Burleson homered as the St. Louis Cardinals used a three-run eighth inning to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-4.
— Kyle Stowers tripled, singled and drove in two runs, while Griffin Conine hit two home runs as the Miami Marlins beat the Los Angeles Angels 12-3.
— Abimelec Ortiz hit his second career home run, while Will Dion led a bullpen outing that allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings as the Washington Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 to sweep the series.
