— Mitchell golfers Brandon Sigmund and Allison Meyerink won the South Dakota Golf Association Match Play Championships on Sunday, with Sigmund completing the SDGA career grand slam and Meyerink outlasting fellow Mitchell golfer Maddie Childs in a 19-hole women’s final. Sigmund won the men’s championship with a 3-and-1 victory over Hartford’s Radley Mauney, after previously winning the state amateur and two-man titles. On the women’s side, Allison Meyerink defeated former Mitchell High School teammate Maddie Childs on the 19th hole to capture the championship. Meyerink won her first two matches by 3-and-2 scores before edging Childs in a playoff after the pair finished
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Seattle’s Colt Emerson singled to right in the ninth inning to give the Mariners their second straight walk-off win over the Minnesota Twins, 7-6 on Sunday. The Mariners blew a 6-0 lead as the Twins scored five runs in the eighth, then tied it on Luke Keaschall’s leadoff homer in the ninth. Trevor Larnach’s 10th homer of the season got Minnesota on the board in the eighth, cutting the margin to 6-2. Later in the eighth, Lewis hit his 12th of the year, a three-run shot, to make it 6-5. Twins starter Taj Bradley pitched six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with four walks. Minnesota has Monday off before sending Joe Ryan to the mound on Tuesday at Kansas City at 6:40 pm.

— The Los Angeles Dodgers have landed two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal in a trade with the Detroit Tigers late Saturday ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Los Angeles sent prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith to Detroit for the 29-year-old left-hander, who is eligible for free agency after the season. Skubal is 8-5 with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 16 starts this year and is expected to make his Dodgers debut Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs.
— The New York Yankees have acquired first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals in exchange for four right-handed pitchers. Garcia, a New York City native, is having a breakout season, hitting .283 with 23 home runs and 56 RBI. The 26-year-old gives the Yankees a needed offensive boost after their lineup struggled following Aaron Judge’s injury. The Yankees could consider moving Garcia back to second base, where he has played in the past.
— The Chicago Cubs bolstered their rotation by acquiring veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for two prospects. Gausman, a 35-year-old impending free agent, is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA this season but brings significant postseason experience, including a 3.83 ERA in 14 playoff appearances.
— The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired former All-Star right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets in exchange for three prospects. Tampa Bay is 65-46 and holds a 2 1/2 game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East. Th 30-year-old Peralta has been one of baseball’s top starters in recent seasons, posting a 3.30 ERA with the Brewers from 2021 through 2025 before being traded to the Mets. He has struggled this season, however, with a 4.99 ERA in 113 innings.
COLLEGE
— A federal judge has clarified that her ruling granting some college athletes an extra year of eligibility does not apply to football players who signed professional contracts before deciding they wanted to return to school. The clarification preserves NCAA rules barring athletes from returning after turning pro and limits the impact of the decision on the upcoming football season. The NCAA plans to appeal the ruling, while President Charlie Baker says the case highlights the need for congressional action on college sports eligibility rules.
— A bipartisan college sports bill received a major boost Friday after the SEC and Big Ten agreed to support the Protect College Sports Act. The compromise would allow schools to directly pay athletes up to $48 million annually by combining the current $21 million revenue-sharing cap with an additional $27 million for player retention. The bill also includes stricter rules on third-party NIL deals. The legislation still faces hurdles in the Senate and House, but supporters hope it can advance before Congress begins its summer recess next week.

— European soccer governing body UEFA is threatening legal action against FIFA after President Gianni Infantino abandoned a controversial plan to sell a stake in future World Cup profits to private investors. UEFA has warned FIFA to preserve documents and electronic records as potential evidence, arguing the proposal raised serious governance concerns. The plan, which would have offered FIFA’s 211 member federations one-time $20 million payments, was withdrawn after widespread opposition from soccer organizations around the world.

— Minnesota rookie Olivia Miles had a game-high 28 points, while Courtney Williams added 27 points as the Minnesota Lynx won their 10th-straight game with a 108-100 win over the Indiana Fever on Sunday. Napheesa Collier had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lynx, while Caitlin Clark added 19 points and 10 assists for the Fever. Minnesota improves to 25-6 on the season and hosts the L.A. Sparks on Thursday at 8 pm.

— CBS Sports has placed lead NFL analyst Tony Romo on leave following his arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. Romo was arrested July 23 after deputies said he failed field sobriety tests, and authorities reported finding an open alcohol container in his vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21. CBS announced that J.J. Watt will replace Romo on its top NFL broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson until further notice.

— Ceddanne Rafaela homered for the third straight game as the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 to sweep the three-game series. Boston is 23-3 since July 3.
— Yordan Alvarez tied a career high with four hits, while Jeremy Peña hit a home run as the Houston Astros used a four-run seventh inning to pull away from the Texas Rangers 7-3 and complete a series sweep. Alvarez finished 4 for 5 with three doubles and two RBIs.
— José Caballero hit a two-run homer as the New York Yankees hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1.
— Anthony Kay tossed 6 1/3 scoreless for the White Sox innings, while Andrew Benintendi, Everson Pereira and Miguel Vargas hit home runs as Chicago beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-1.
— Gavin Williams allowed one hit in 5 2/3 innings and struck out 10, while Chase DeLauter drove in three runs as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0.
— Keider Montero pitched six scoreless innings and Eduardo Valencia drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers completed their first season-series sweep ever against an American League opponent with an 11-0 victory over the Athletics. Detroit finished the season 6-0 vs. the A’s.
— Jackson Merrill homered and Jake Cronenworth and Luis Campusano each had RBIs for the San Diego Padres in a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. The Padres have won eight of their last nine games and sit just one game back of Philadelphia for the final NL Wild Card spot.
— Mike Yastrzemski homered and drove in two runs as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 to complete a rare four-game sweep. The Nationals have lost five straight, including being swept in a four-game series for the first time this season and the first time ever in Atlanta.
— Kyle Freeland gave up one run and struck out eight in his first career complete game, while Jake McCarthy hit a three-run homer as the Colorado Rockies beat the Kansas City Royals 8-1 to finish off a three-game series sweep. The 99-degree temperature at first pitch made it the second-hottest Rockies home game in franchise history.
— Walbert Ureña pitched three-hit ball over six shutout innings as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0. Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski gave up two runs on two hits in seven innings, striking out 10.
— Cincinnati’s Chase Burns won his 12th straight decision and Sal Stewart hit his 24th home run as the Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-2. Burns is the first Reds pitcher to win 12 straight decisions since1956.
— Bryce Harper and Bryan De La Cruz both homered as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 in a game halted by rain after 5 ½ innings.
— Miami RP Michael Petersen worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the seventh inning as the Marlins beat the New York Mets 2-0. Joe Mack homered, Xavier Edwards added an RBI single and Sandy Alcantara tossed six shutout innings for the Marlins.
— José Fermin hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1. Matthew Liberatore pitched six shutout innings for St. Louis.
