MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls basketball hosts No. 1 Brandon Valley on Tuesday at the Mitchell High School gym for Senior Night at 6 pm. The Kernels are coming off a 60-35 win vs. Pierre and a career-high 23 points for CeCe Morgan. Mitchell improved to 12-6 on the season and is currently the 7 seed in AA girls with two games remaining in the regular season.
— Mitchell Kernels boys basketball hosts Brandon Valley on Tuesday for Senior Night at 7:30 pm. The Kernels are coming off a 51-48 double overtime loss at Pierre on Friday night to fall to 8-9 on the season. Mitchell is currently the 11 seed in AA boys with two games remaining in the regular season.
— Mitchell’s Danny Borja, Taylor DeJong, Diana Borja and Kaylynn Fick each finished in the top-four on Friday at the Region 3A wrestling tournament, advancing to the state wrestling meet this week in Sioux Falls. Borja placed second at 120 pounds, while DeJong, Fick and Diana Borja all claimed fourth place finishes. The state wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls starts on Thursday.
— Mitchell Kernels boys wrestling will have two competitors at the state tournament with Rocky Clark winning at heavyweight and Noah Bennett placing second at 132 pounds. Mitchell had five wrestlers miss out on state by one position.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball secured the No. 2 seed in next week’s GPAC Tournament with an 81-65 win at Northwestern on Saturday. Avery Broughton finished with 30 points and 14 rebounds on 13-of-18 shooting, while Emma Yost added 23 points. The GPAC Women’s Basketball Tournament will begin on Wednesday with the quarterfinal round at the top-four seeds. The semifinals will be on Saturday, February 28, with Championship on Tuesday on March 3.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball lost its regular season finale at Northwestern on Saturday, 97-65. The Tigers finish the regular season at 14-14 overall and 9-11 in the GPAC. Gavin Hinker had a team-high 14 points off the bench. DWU will be at Northwestern again on Wednesday at 7 pm for the quarterfinals of the GPAC men’s basketball tournament.
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Jagger Tyler has advanced to the NAIA national wrestling tournament after winning the GPAC title at 174 pounds on Saturday at Northwestern. The Tigers Kipp Cordes also will advance to nationals at 133 pounds.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball dropped three of four games over the weekend in Jamestown, N.D. with losses to Minot State, Dickinson State and Jamestown, along with a 9-6 win over Bismarck State on Saturday. The Tigers, 6-4 on the season, will be at Mt. Marty on Wednesday for a single game at 3 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball will be at York (Neb.) for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday starting at Noon.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball won at Denver on Saturday 71-55. Madison Mathiowetz had a game-high 23 points and 9-of-12 shooting, while Brooklyn Meyer added 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Jacks improved to 22-6 overall and 12-2 in the Summit League. They move into second place, all alone in the conference. The victory was the 650th of head coach Aaron Johnston’s career. He is the 12th active head coach to reach 650 wins. SDSU returns home to face North Dakota State on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State men’s basketball defeated North Dakota on Saturday 91-83 as they finished the game on an 8-0 run over the final 90 seconds. SDSU’s five starters all scored in double digits. Joe Sayler led the way with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Matthew Mors matched his season high of 18 points on 7-of-10 from the field. The Jacks outrebounded North Dakota by a 40-25 margin. SDSU also made 14 3-pointers, which is tied for its most in a single game this season. The Jacks improved to 13-16 overall and 6-8 in the Summit League. SDSU will be at Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State softball picked up a pair of wins on Saturday in Murray, Kentucky, defeating Green Bay 10-2 and IU Indy 7-5. SDSU improved to 12-4 on the season. The Jackrabbits head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, next weekend with two games on Friday and two on Saturday.
— South Dakota State baseball took two out of three games over the weekend at Tarleton State, winning on Sunday 5-1. The Jacks will be at Central Arkansas on Friday for the start of a four-game series.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s basketball let a halftime lead slip away on Saturday in an 81-68 Senior Day home loss to North Dakota State. The Bison outscored the Coyotes 53-38 in the second half. Molly Joyce led USD with 24 points, while Angelina Robles added 22. The Coyotes fall to third place in the Summit League with an 11-3 conference record. USD will be at North Dakota on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— USD softball lost four of five games over the weekend in Arlington, Texas, picked up a 15-7 win on Saturday vs. the host Texas-Arlington. The Coyotes travel to Miami this weekend for five games, starting on Friday at 9 am vs. Harvard.
— USD men’s basketball will be at Oral Roberts on Saturday at 7 pm.

— Tyler Reddick rebounded from a crash to become the first driver in 17 years to sweep the first two races of a NASCAR season, winning in double overtime Sunday in Atlanta. A week after winning the Daytona 500, Reddick gave 23XI Racing and co-owner Michael Jordan another victory by outdueling Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain and Carson Hocevar. Reddick raced to his 10th career victory despite front-end damage sustained in a nine-car crash on the 224th lap. He’s the sixth driver to open a Cup season with consecutive victories and the first since Matt Kenseth in 2009.

— Tyrese Maxey had 39 points and eight assists as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 135-108 to snap a four-game losing streak. Anthony Edwards scored 19 of his 28 points in the first half for the Timberwolves. Jaden McDaniels added 19 and Julius Randle scored 18.
— Jaylen Brown had 32 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as the Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 111-89. Payton Pritchard scored 30 points with six 3-pointers and eight assists for the Celtics, who have won eight of nine as they attempt to close the gap on Detroit atop the Eastern Conference standings.
— Karl-Anthony Towns had 28 points and 11 rebounds for his NBA-leading 39th double-double of the season as the New York Knicks defeated the Chicago Bulls 105-99. Jalen Brunson had 19 points and nine assists to help New York deal the Bulls a ninth straight loss, their longest losing streak since January 2019.
— Isaiah Joe scored 22 points and Cason Wallace added 20 points and 10 assists to help the short-handed Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 121-113. Chet Holmgren had 17 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks for Oklahoma City, which made 21 of 41 3-point attempts.
— Desmond Bane scored 36 points as the Orlando Magic held on for a 111-109 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
— Donovan Clingan had 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Portland Trail Blazers past the Phoenix Suns, 92-77.
— LaMelo Ball made a career-high 10 3-pointers and scored 37 points to help the Charlotte Hornets rout the Washington Wizards 129-112. Ball attempted 15 3-pointers, while Kon Knueppel added 28 points. The Hornets made 12 of 14 3-pointers in the third quarter to blow open the game and finished 25 of 46 from three.
— Khris Middleton scored 25 points to lead the Dallas Mavericks over the Indiana Pacers 134-130, snapping a 10-game losing streak.
