MITCHELL KERNELS
— No. 7 Mitchell Kernels girls basketball will face No. 2 O’Gorman at 6 pm CST in the AA state tournament quarterfinals in Rapid City. The Kernels defeated No. 10 seed Spearfish on Friday 52-42 in the SoDAK 16.
— Mitchell Kernels boys basketball had its season come to an end on Saturday night with a 57-43 loss at Watertown in the AA SoDAK 16. Colton Smith led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds in his final career game. The Kernels end the season with an 8-12 record. Watertown moves on to the AA State Tournament where they will face the No. 5 seed Harrisburg in the quarterfinals.
— Mitchell Marlins girls hockey had its season come to an end on Friday with a 3-1 loss to Rushmore in the consolation semifinals of the state tournament at the Mitchell Activities Center. Mitchell ends the season with a 7-16 record. Rushmore advances to face No. 5 Aberdeen in the fifth-place game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan will host an opening-round site of the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament beginning Friday, March 13 at the Corn Palace. The Tigers earned the No. 2 seed in their quadrant and will face No. 15 St. Francis (Illinois) at 6 p.m. in Mitchell. The other first-round game features No. 7 Eastern Oregon vs. No. 10 the College of the Ozarks. The winners meet on Saturday, March 14 for a trip to the round of 16 in Sioux City.
— Dakota Wesleyan had three wrestlers compete at the NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championships in Wichita, Kansas, last week and junior Jagger Tyler led the way with an All-American finish. Tyler went 4-3 at nationals and placed eighth at 174 pounds to earn All-America honors. He opened with a major decision win, then battled through the consolation bracket with three straight victories to secure a top-eight finish. Two other Tigers also competed: Kipp Cordes went 1-2 at 133 pounds, while Teagan Foreman finished 1-2 at 174. As a team, Dakota Wesleyan placed 34th out of 63 schools.
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball takes on Southwest Minnesota State on Monday at Noon in Tucson, Arizona. The Tigers start GPAC play on Saturday at Northwestern with a 1 pm doubleheader.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball split two games in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday, losing to Carroll (Mont.) 7-4, before defeating Valley City State 3-2. The Tigers, 12-9 on the season, have Monday off before taking on Providence (Mont.) and Dickinson State on Tuesday starting at 2 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball defeated No. 1 seed North Dakota State 64-51 on Sunday to win its 13th Summit League Tournament championship. Brooklyn Meyer was named tournament MVP, finishing with 26 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. SDSU now awaits its opponent, seed and location for this year’s NCAA women’s basketball tournament on Sunday.
— South Dakota State softball split four games over the weekend in Greeley, Colorado, setting numerous teams record on Saturday in a 24-2 win over Northern Colorado. The Jacks scored 12 runs on 12 hits in the first inning, all with two outs. SDSU’s 24 runs in just five innings are four more than their previous record of 20. The Jacks tallied 28 hits, nine more than their previous record in a game of 19. The Jacks also set new single-game records in RBIs (24), doubles (7) and total bases (46). SDSU, 14-13 on the season, travel to Arlington, Texas, this weekend for three games vs. Columbia and two vs. UT-Arlington.
— South Dakota State baseball lost two of three games over the weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. SDSU picked up a 5-4 win vs. Northwestern on Friday, before losing to Minnesota on Saturday 3-2 in 10 innings. On Sunday, the Jacks would lose another one run game, 5-4, to Southern Illinois. SDSU, 5-10 on the season, will be at Kansas State on Wednesday at 6 pm.

— USD softball split a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend in Greeley, Colorado, with Colorado State on Saturday and Northern Colorado on Sunday. The Coyotes, 6-17 on the season, will host Mt. Marty on Tuesday at 4 pm.

— The L.A. Rams and cornerback Trent McDuffie reached agreement Sunday on a record four-year, $124 million extension that includes $100 million guaranteed. The new contract makes the 25-year-old McDuffie the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. On Wednesday, the Rams agreed to acquire McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs for a package of draft picks that includes the No. 29 pick in this year’s NFL Draft. McDuffie was entering the final season of his rookie deal.
— Five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby is heading to the Baltimore Ravens. The Las Vegas Raiders will receive two first-round picks from the Ravens, including the No. 14 overall pick in next month’s NFL draft. The 28-year-old Crosby had 10 sacks last season and has reached double digits four times in his seven seasons.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Former Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore has pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in a criminal case that arose immediately after he was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with his executive assistant. The deal was struck Friday, the same day that a judge planned to hear a challenge to Moore’s arrest in December on three charges, including felony home invasion. Those charges were dropped in exchange for Moore pleading no contest to trespassing and malicious use of a telecom device.
NASCAR
— Ryan Blaney won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday. Blaney overcame several tire problems and passed Ty Gibbs with 10 laps left to earn his 18th career victory. The win also snapped Tyler Reddick’s record start to the season after three straight wins. Christopher Bell finished second, Kyle Larson was third, and Gibbs placed fourth.

— Victor Wembanyama had 29 points, while De’Aaron Fox added 20 points and 10 assists as the San Antonio Spurs won their fourth straight, rolling to a 145-120 victory over the Houston Rockets. San Antonio has won 15 of 16. Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson had 23 points each for Houston, which allowed a season high in points.
— Jaylen Brown scored 23 points and Jayson Tatum had 20 in his second game back from a torn right Achilles, giving the Boston Celtics to a 109-98 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.. Payton Pritchard added 18 points and Baylor Scheierman had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Boston moved within three games of East-leading Detroit.
— Luka Doncic had 35 points and eight rebounds, while Austin Reaves added 25 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New York Knicks 110-97.
— Devin Booker had 30 points and 10 assists as the Phoenix Suns ended the Charlotte Hornets’ road winning streak at 10 games with a 111-99 victory. Charlotte’s road winning streak was the NBA’s longest since the Lakers won 11 straight away from home in 2019-20.
